A range-bound session marked trading at Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Thursday as investor sentiment remained mixed in the corporate earnings season.
Though the KSE-100 index kicked off proceedings on a positive note, it closed with a loss of 361 points. The index touched the intra-day high of 113,477.71 earlier in the day, but the strength proved short-lived, with bears taking over control before midday.
Amidst consolidation, the bourse wiped out all the gains and dropped to the intra-day low of 112,540.12 towards the close of trading.
At the end of the day, the benchmark KSE-100 index posted a loss of 360.86 points, or 0.32%, and settled at 112,564.08.
In its comments, Topline Securities said Pakistan's bourse saw a range-bound session, where the benchmark index swung between the intra-day high of 553 points and low of 385 points. It closed at 112,564, marking a modest decline of 361 points.
Investor sentiment remained mixed. While Meezan Bank results were in line with market expectations, Pakistan State Oil (PSO) earnings fell slightly short of industry forecasts due to weaker-than-anticipated gross margins, it said.
The upward movement was primarily driven by Lucky Cement, MCB Bank, Bank Alfalah, NBP and Meezan Bank, which added 184 points to the index. On the other hand, Pakistan Petroleum, Engro Holdings and PSO dragged the index down by 254 points, Topline added.
Arif Habib Limited (AHL) reported that the KSE-100 index managed to stay above 112,000 as further consolidation was observed.
Some 41 stocks rose while 53 fell where major contributors to the index gains were Lucky Cement (+2.82%), Pakistan Services (+6.72%) and MCB Bank (+0.83%). On the flip side, Pakistan Petroleum (-2.66%), PSO (-2.95%) and Bank AL Habib (-4.57%) were the biggest laggards, it said.
Among corporate announcements, AHL mentioned, PSO reported a significant boost in 1HFY25 earnings, posting earnings per share (EPS) of Rs23.81, up three times year-on-year (YoY).
On a quarterly basis, PSO reported EPS of Rs15.35 for 2QFY25, a turnaround from the loss per share of Rs30.11 in the same quarter of last year, thanks to inventory gains and lower finance costs.
Meezan Bank declared CY24 EPS of Rs57.28, reflecting a 20% YoY increase. However, the bank's 4QCY24 EPS was down 8% YoY at Rs13.66. The bank also announced a final dividend of Rs7 per share, which took total dividend to Rs28 for the year, AHL added.
KTrade Securities commented that the stock market experienced a mixed performance, with the cement sector leading the gains, while exploration and production (E&P), investment companies and technology sectors lost ground.
It anticipated that once market sentiment improved, cyclical stocks and E&P companies would outperform others. It advised investors to keep a close watch on the ongoing results season as it may provide cues for future market direction.
Overall trading volumes decreased to 596.7 million shares compared with Wednesday's tally of 669.6 million. Shares of 445 companies were traded. Of these, 176 stocks closed higher, 221 decreased and 48 remained unchanged.

KSE-100 index plummets 2,186 points, amid geopolitical tensions

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) experienced a notable decline on Friday, with the KSE-100 index falling by 1,949.56 points, closing at 122,143.56 amid escalating geo-political tensions that followed Israel's attack on Iran earlier today. The KSE 100 Index ended the day's session registering a decline of 1.57%. The index recorded a high at 123,058.06 points during the day, while the low reached 121,604.59. Trading volume stood at 237,086,212 shares, with a total value of 19,718,824,728. The index had previously closed at 124,093.12. Israel launched an attack on Iran todaytargeting the country's nuclear facilities under the pretext of preventing Tehran from developing atomic weapons. The attack, that killed Iranian nuclear scientists and targetted the top 20 military commanders despite Iran's long-standing insistence that its nuclear-related activity is for peaceful purposes. Israel, which is believed to be the only nuclear armed state in the Middle East, has declared a state of emergency in anticipation of retaliation by Tehran. Earlier on Thursday, the PSX saw a turbulent session, with the benchmark KSE-100 index hitting a record intra-day high of 126,718 before reversing course and closing modestly lower. At the end of trading, the benchmark KSE-100 index lost 259.56 points, or 0.21%, and settled at 124,093.12. The market volatility continues to reflect broader uncertainties tied to global events. Early gains were supported by improved investor sentiment, driven by the budget announcement, robust remittances and monetary policy expectations. However, the rally lost steam as the session progressed, with profit-taking in overheated stocks and geopolitical uncertainty surrounding the Middle East, undermining sentiment. Arif Habib Corp MD Ahsan Mehanti stated that stocks closed under pressure on geopolitical uncertainty and post-budget profit-taking in overbought shares. "The rout in global equities on Middle East tensions, a slump in international crude oil prices and a weak rupee on contracting exports were among the key factors behind the bearish close of the market," he added. JS Global analyst Mubashir Anis Naviwala said that the index hit a high of 126,718 before profit-taking dragged it down by 260 points. The analyst advised investors to watch for key support levels and use dips to accumulate stocks with focus on fertiliser, cement and banking sectors for near-term opportunities.

Status quo likely as rising oil prices play on SBP's mind, say analysts

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is expected to hold the key policy rate at 11% in its upcoming meeting scheduled for Monday, market analysts noted. 'While domestic macroeconomic indicators have improved significantly, particularly inflation and the external account, we believe, the central bank is likely to adopt a wait-and-see approach in light of emerging global risks and domestic policy adjustments,' Arif Habib Limited (AHL) said in its report. The MPC of the central bank will meet on June 16 to decide on the policy rate, the central bank announced on Thursday. The SBP said it will issue the Monetary Policy Statement through a press release on the same day. In its last meeting held on May 5, 2025, the MPC cut the policy rate by 100 basis points (bps) to 11%. This was the lowest policy rate since March 2022 (9.75%). The central bank has cut the rate by 1,100bps since June from an all-time high of 22%. At the time, the MPC noted that inflation declined sharply during March and April, mainly due to a reduction in administered electricity prices and a continued downtrend in food inflation. AHL, in its report released on Friday, was of the view that while the domestic landscape supports an easing bias, recent geopolitical developments have raised the stakes. 'Escalating tensions in key oil-producing regions have triggered a sharp surge in global oil prices. Benchmark crude contracts, including Brent, WTI, and Arab Light, have risen close to 10-12% WoW, with daily spikes exceeding 6% as of the latest reading. 'For an oil-importing economy like Pakistan, this poses direct and indirect inflationary risks,' AHL noted. The brokerage house, citing its estimates, said that for every USD 5/bbl increase in global oil prices (on an annualised basis) adds roughly 23bps to headline inflation directly. 'Additionally, any upward revision in domestic energy tariffs, though necessary to prevent further accumulation of circular debt, would carry inflationary implications. The timing and magnitude of these adjustments, alongside changes in food prices, and potential global trade disruptions, could alter the inflation outlook materially,' it shared. Topline Securities, another brokerage house, also expects the status quo as international crude oil prices have rebounded to US$68-70/barrel amidst rising tensions in the Middle East region and an expected US-China deal. 'This warrants a cautious approach from policy makers, in our view, as oil prices' movement has remained a major driver of inflation in past. 'Some of the major notifications are also expected before the start of next fiscal year i.e. gas price notification, and electricity price notification, among others,' Topline said in its report. The brokerage house shared that in its poll, 56% of the market participants expect a status quo in the upcoming monetary policy meeting compared to 31% in the last poll. While 44% are expecting a rate cut of at least 50bps. Out of the total 44% rate cut participants, 19% are expecting a 50bps cut, and 25% are expecting a 100bps cut, it added.

Selling pressure at PSX as geopolitical tensions flare after Israeli strike on Iran

Selling pressure was observed at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), with the benchmark KSE-100 Index losing nearly 2,500 points during the opening minutes of trading on Friday, amid an escalating geopolitical situation after Israel conducted a military strike on Iran. At 9:50am, the benchmark index was hovering at 122,533.32 level, amid a decrease of 1,559.80 points or 1.26%. Across-the-board selling pressure was observed in key sectors including automobile assemblers, cement, commercial banks, oil and gas exploration companies, OMCs, power generation and refinery. Index-heavy stocks including OGDC, PPL, PSO, MARI and HUBCO traded in the red. On Thursday, the PSX witnessed a modest correction, easing after a strong rally earlier in the week fueled by investor optimism surrounding the federal budget. The benchmark KSE-100 Index declined by 259.56 points, or 0.21 percent, closing at 124,093.12 points. Globally, stocks dived in early Asian trade on Friday, led by a selloff in US futures, while oil prices jumped after Israel conducted a military strike on Iran, sending investors scurrying to safe havens such as gold and the Swiss franc. The Israeli attack raises the risk of a fresh escalation in tensions in the Middle East, a major oil producing region, and comes at a time of heightened pressure on the global economy and financial markets from US President Donald Trump's shakeup of trade policies. Market reaction was swift, with U.S. S&P E-mini futures slumping 1.5% as of 0055 GMT and Nasdaq futures skidding 1.7%. Japan's Nikkei lost 1.4% and South Korea's KOSPI slipped 1.2%. Brent crude jumped more than 6% to $73.56 per barrel. Gold climbed 1% to about $3,419 per ounce. Israel said it was declaring a state of emergency in anticipation of a missile and drone strike by Tehran, after what it called a 'preemptive strike' over Iran's nuclear programme. Explosions were heard northeast of Iran's capital Tehran early on Friday, the state-run Nour News said. Two US officials who spoke on condition of anonymity said Israel had begun carrying out strikes on Iran and there was no US assistance or involvement in the operation. This is an intra-day update
