Teens should be training to become AI 'ninjas, ' Google DeepMind CEO says
Just as millennials had the internet and personal computers and Gen Z had smartphones and tablets, generative AI is the transformative technology of Gen Alpha's time — and they should embrace it, the AI leader said on a recent episode of "Hard Fork," a podcast about the future of technology.
"Over the next 5 to 10 years, I think we're going to find what normally happens with big new technology shifts, which is that some jobs get disrupted," he told co-hosts Kevin Roose and Casey Newton.
However, he said, "new, more valuable, usually more interesting jobs get created" in the wake of that kind of disruption.
The generative AI arms race began in earnest with the release of OpenAI's ChatGPT in 2022. The technology has advanced rapidly ever since, sparking both excitement and concern for how it will revolutionize the workplace and the world at large.
Google DeepMind is the research lab behind Google's AI projects, including Gemini, the company's chatbot. Hassabis is leading Google's charge toward the AI race's ultimate prize — artificial general intelligence.
There is little agreement on a definition for AGI, but generally, it is considered an AI model that can reason in the same way a human does. Hassabis said Tuesday during a live interview at the Google I/O developer conference that DeepMind is less than 10 years away from creating its own.
"Whatever happens with these AI tools, you'll be better off understanding how they work, and how they function, and what you can do with them," Hassabis said, referring to young people.
He advised those headed to college to "immerse yourself now" and strive to "become a sort of ninja using the latest tools." Hassabis said they should spend time "learning to learn" — the same advice he gave to students at the University of Cambridge.
Other AI leaders have also encouraged teenagers anxious about AI to learn about it. Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman told young people to play with the new technology and learn its weaknesses. In higher education, Rice University announced Tuesday that it will join a growing number of colleges offering AI degrees.
That doesn't mean they should abandon the building blocks that make for a good STEM student, Hassabis said. He still recommends getting good at coding and building up fundamental skills for success.

AI leaves web in the lurch
The AI-fixated tech industry is rapidly dismantling the old web, with no game plan for how to replace it. State of play: Chatbots have already begun to intercept web traffic and drain publishers' revenue. Now tech giants and startups aim to remodel the devices and browsers we use to access web pages, using AI to summarize or pre-empt the content that people and publishers post online. Driving the news: Tech circles were abuzz over the past week with news from the normally sedate browser world — the software category that has been shaping access to digital information since the '90s. Firefox last week debuted an experimental browser tool that provides AI summaries when users hover over links. Also last week, the Browser Company, maker of the Arc browser that's beloved by some power users, announced it was pivoting to focus on a new AI-powered browser called Dia. OpenAI has long been rumored to be working on its own browser, but has yet to ship anything. Over the last two years Google, which customarily casts itself as champion of the open web, has steadily increased the prominence of its AI summaries in every aspect of search. At Google's I/O developer conference last year it announced the U.S.-wide rollout of the AI summaries, which sit on top of search results and allow users to get their answers without clicking through to source pages (while also sometimes providing made-up facts). At this year's I/O, the company said that AI Mode, which turns a user's search into an AI chat conversation, would now be a standard feature — although some early reviews have found its information unreliable. Meanwhile, OpenAI made headlines with its announcement that it was purchasing Apple designer Jony Ive's AI device startup. Ive will now spearhead OpenAI's plan to sell new, non-smartphone gadgets that could bring generative AI answers more thoroughly into users' everyday lives. At Microsoft's recent Build developer conference the company introduced a new open project called NLweb, aimed at letting websites build their own chatbots to help site visitors access content. What they're saying: "Increasingly, web pages — apps, articles, and files — will become tool calls with AI chat interfaces," Browser Company CEO Josh Miller wrote to explain why his firm was stopping further work on Arc. Yes, but: As tech goes all in on rebuilding our web experiences with AI, there's no guarantee that the web will still be there when that job is done. With chatbots becoming users' default way to find out what's happening in the world, their makers pretend they can plaster this new interface layer over the internet without disrupting the data sources that feed it. But some media observers believe an AI-first web will choke off the money and attention that motivates web creators to keep extending the common knowledge pool. Many publishers are already seeing significant traffic and income declines from the shift toward AI search, though Google disputes there's a connection. And creative artists fear their work is being stolen or devalued. This is everyone's problem. Of course the businesses and people that have built their work around the web are afraid — but AI makers should be worried, too. The web's vast treasury (and cesspool) of human creative work has accumulated since the 1990s because people wanted to share what they know either for financial or reputational gain, or just to advance a cause or do some good. That setup gave us everything from Wikipedia and YouTube tutorials to blogs and Reddit. Nearly all of the old-school web has already been fed into AI training databases for regurgitation by bots like ChatGPT. From now on, valuable new contributions are likely to sit behind subscription paywalls or depend on unsteady alternate means of support (membership programs, nonprofit grants, government funding). If AI undermines the incentives for human beings to update the web with their news, opinions and arguments, it will also cut off its own future. The intrigue: Some in the web avant-garde are already anticipating a world in which the most ambitious or meaningful creative work takes place in what they're calling a "dark forest" web. They imagine creative communities that are purposefully isolated from the Silicon Valley bazaar, generating "anti-memes" and critical ideas without participating in social media's algorithmic competition or AI's sloppy reductivism. The other side: AI firms have introduced modest efforts to feed money back to content providers. OpenAI, for instance, has made multiple deals with online publishers (including Axios). But it's hard to see how that kind of arrangement replaces the search traffic and ad revenue that's been the sustaining anchor for so many web publishers for the past decade. When it looked like Facebook's rise was threatening to hobble news publishers, the social media giant announced multiple programs to funnel them cash. But that support was fickle and fleeting, and site owners and creators know they can't sustain their businesses purely on tech largesse. What's next: Advertising in AI chats is still in its infancy, but OpenAI has said it's going to build ads into ChatGPT, and its competitors won't be far behind. Everyone assumes this business will evolve rapidly, building on the performance-based model and personalization techniques that emerged in the search and social media eras. That can only further undermine the remnants of the web publishing industry, unless AI makers choose to share this new income with information providers. But they're spending billions on data centers, and their investors are expecting astronomical revenue growth, so no one should be surprised if they want to hold onto the lion's share. The bottom line: Google shaped a search-based web on which independent publishers and individual contributors could survive, if not always thrive. Now AI is ready to turn that entire ecosystem into a legacy product.

3 members of the 'Tesla mafia' share what they learned from Elon Musk's company
Tesla makes EVs, batteries, robots, and startups. A steady stream of employees — the "Tesla mafia" — have left to found companies in everything from EVs and batteries to robotics and electric boats. Electric car startup Lucid was founded by former Tesla executives back in 2007, and the ex-Tesla founders of British EV startup Longbow previously told Business Insider they aimed to deliver a Roadster sports car before Elon Musk's company. Former senior employees who then raised large amounts for their own startups include former senior vice president of energy Drew Baglino, whose energy firm Heron Power reportedly raised a Series A round of over $30 million in April. Automotive tech startup Tekion, founded by Tesla's former chief information officer Jay Vijayan, is now valued at over $4 billion. "The success rate of former Tesla employees starting their own companies, building hard things, is exceptionally high," Chris Walti, Tesla's former Optimus lead, told BI. BI spoke to Walti and two other former Tesla employees about why so many of its former employees have gone on to startup success. 'It's not a Google-like culture, and it's not a 9-to-5 experience' Gene Berdichevsky, CEO of Sila Nanotechnologies and Tesla's seventh ever employee, said what sets working at the company apart is the sense of "radical self-reliance." "It's kind of the belief that when you're doing new things, there are no experts to ask, there are no suppliers who have done it before. If there are, you're probably not doing something particularly novel," said Berdichevsky, who left the company in 2008. Walti, who left the company in 2022 after seven years to start robotics firm Mytra, told BI that Tesla gave engineers unprecedented freedom and responsibility to tackle "really big problems." "You can solve problems without requiring 20 product managers and five VPs for approval. Here's the problem: go figure it out, go solve it, go talk to whoever you need to get it done," Walti said. While Tesla's lack of bureaucracy may be liberating, the company is also known for its intense work culture. Musk and other senior figures have previously slept on the factory floor during crises, and employees are expected to work long hours to meet the billionaires' tight deadlines. "Tesla is not an easy place to work, but it was never intended to be. It's not a Google-like culture, and it's not a 9-to-5 experience," said Berdichevsky. Walti said Tesla employees used to jokingly warn each other not to "fly too close to the sun," with Musk having little tolerance for failure. "Elon has a short fuse. It doesn't matter how many successful projects you've delivered," he said. "You screw up once and you might be out." Walti added that the intensity of working with Musk led some people to "burn out," and said that working in a system where employees had little say over product direction could be frustrating. "If you're not too close to the sun, it's a wonderful place to work because you get to work on really meaty problems. You get the innovation, the scale, the tech risk, and you're surrounded by a bunch of really innovative people," he said. "On the flip side, it doesn't give you a lot of agency over why you're building things. You'll be told ' make the Cybertruck float,' and at no point is there a debate on why; it was like, just go do it," Walti added. Leaving Tesla Tobias Kahnert, who founded powertrain startup EFT Mobility, said that starting a new company is often more attractive than taking a job at a rival for Tesla employees. "We used to call it internally 'the Mount Everest syndrome'," said Tobias Kahnert, who was a senior software engineer at Tesla from 2014 to 2017. Kahnert joined Tesla right out of college and worked there through the "production hell" of ramping the Model 3 mass-market EV. The idea of founding his own company felt like a natural next move, he said. "I couldn't see a more exciting company in the world at that point" than Tesla, he said. "The option was either I stay with that company until retirement, which is a long time away, or I start something myself," he said. Kahnert said the most valuable lesson he learned at Tesla was how to innovate quickly without losing track of the need to scale a product. "The stretch between these two worlds is something you learn quite quickly at Tesla. You need this spirit of challenging the norms, seeing what's possible, and figuring out ways to get it done without being bogged down too much in processes," said Kahnert. "But you also actually need to get on the level of working with the process and alongside regulations to even have a product that you can bring into the market," he added. Walti said Tesla offered a unique experience within engineering of building hard things at scale on a tight timeline, which he called a "trifecta" of speed, scale, and innovation. "Usually, you have to pick two of the three. At places like Boeing or Lockheed, you're building hard things with innovation, but the timelines are, like, 10 years," said Walti. "Tesla is a unique place because of the scale. Startups are fast and innovative, but not yet scaled. Innovating with speed at scale is an interesting nexus that really accelerates learning," he added.
