Unique Exeter picture collection to be saved
A "unique and irreplaceable" record of photos of 20th Century Exeter is being saved from destruction with a £178,000 National Lottery grant, according to the South West Heritage Trust.
The trust said it would use the money to digitise 24,000 images taken by photographer Henry Wykes, which are suffering from vinegar syndrome - a chemical process that destroys negatives.
Mr Wykes, who was born in Australia and opened his first studio in Exeter in 1914, documented key moment's in the city's history, including the devastation caused by the Baedeker raids in April and May 1942.
He was the UK's oldest working photographer when he retired at the age of 88 in 1962.
The Isca Photographic Collection Project will preserve 24,000 of the 50,000 images the collection holds and the work is likely to take 15 months.
Volunteers will help catalogue the photographs and make them available online.
Scott Pettitt, the head of archives at Devon Heritage Centre, said: "The Isca Collection is one of the most significant visual records of Exeter of the past century.
"It offers an extraordinary account of the city and its inhabitants during a period of unprecedented transformation."
He said the collection was "a social document of the city and its inhabitants".
He said Mr Wykes, who was also a portrait photographer, "captured the changing faces of the city".
Mr Pettitt added: "By the 1960s there was more diversity and he captured things like changes in women's fashion."
There will be an exhibition at Custom House in Exeter in 2026 and community events will also take place, including an environmental project.
Stuart McLeod, from the National Lottery, said the project would lead to more people getting "involved with, protecting and learning about the exciting heritage right on their doorstep".
He said heritage had a "huge role to play" in instilling pride in communities and boosting local economies.

Single Lotto ticket holder wins £4 million jackpot
A single ticket holder has won the £4 million jackpot in Saturday's Lotto draw. The winning Lotto numbers were 11, 17, 27, 30, 39 and 46 while the bonus number was 56. Players have been urged to check their tickets and call in to claim the top prize, with the jackpot winner matching all six main numbers to take the £4,003,513 sum. Record-breaking £199m EuroMillions jackpot rolls over to Friday
Friday's EuroMillions jackpot will be an estimated £208 million, after no player scooped Tuesday's top prize. The jackpot on Friday would be the largest prize the UK has seen, National Lottery operator Allwyn said. The winning EuroMillions numbers on Tuesday were 12, 15, 38, 47, 48. The Lucky Stars are 05, 07. Andy Carter, senior winners' adviser at Allwyn said: 'We are now on the verge of potentially creating the biggest National Lottery winner this country has ever seen – making a single UK winner instantly richer than the likes of Adele and Dua Lipa while also landing them at the number one spot on The National Lottery's biggest wins list.' An anonymous UK ticket holder won the existing record jackpot of £195 million on July 19 2022, while just two months earlier, Joe and Jess Thwaite, from Gloucester, won £184,262,899 with a Lucky Dip ticket for the draw on May 10 2022. The UK's third biggest win came after an anonymous ticket-holder scooped the £177 million jackpot in the draw on November 26 last year, while the biggest this year was £83 million in January. To win the jackpot, the ticket holder must match all five main numbers, plus the two lucky stars. Prizes are won for winning fewer numbers, including those matching two winning on average £2.72, and those matching four claiming £31.26 The odds of winning the jackpot are one in 139,838,160.

Severe weather delays Pacers' arrival in Oklahoma City for NBA Finals
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Indiana Pacers' arrival in Oklahoma City for the NBA Finals has been delayed by weather. Forecasters issued a tornado warning, flood watch and severe thunderstorm watch for Oklahoma City and much of the surrounding areas on Tuesday afternoon, all while the Pacers' charter flight was in the air. The flight was diverted to Tulsa, Oklahoma, and refueled, and the team was planning to arrive in Oklahoma City later Tuesday evening. Oklahoma City's airport arrivals and departures were interrupted by heavy rain and wind. The Pacers and the Oklahoma City Thunder are scheduled to appear at the NBA Finals media day on Wednesday at the arena that will host Game 1 of the title series on Thursday night. There was at least one tornado spotted in Norman, Oklahoma, near the University of Oklahoma campus, on Tuesday afternoon.
