Baxter writes off Exeter's worst-ever season
Exeter boss Rob Baxter says he will not refer to his side's worst-ever season again.The Chiefs' lost 30-26 at home to third-placed Sale in their final Premiership game of the season.The loss - which was an improved performance on some games this season - saw Exeter end in a club-worst ninth position in the top flight after just four wins all season.It ends a difficult campaign for Exeter which has seen the club dispense with three coaches and suffer a record 79-17 loss at Gloucester a month ago."I'm not going to refer to this season at all," Baxter told BBC Sport when asked about his plans for the next campaign."What I'm going to refer to is my expectations of them going forward."All I've referred to in the last three or four weeks is that my expectations of them are higher than their expectations of themselves are."I'm not going to lower my expectations, so they have to raise theirs, and if they catch up with me they'll be winning trophies and they'll be winning in Europe and they'll be doing all the things that they could do."
Baxter has taken a more hands-on role coaching the side since long-serving assistants Rob Hunter and Ali Hepher were dismissed after the defeat at Gloucester.That loss was the nadir of a season which saw Exeter lose all four of their European games and win just four league matches - two of them against Saracens and Northampton who were without many of their international stars. But in recent weeks Exeter have improved and had chances to win the game, against a Sale side who knew victory would secure a fourth play-off campaign in the past five seasons. "A lot of teams need a dedicated start point - that Gloucester game was a dedicated start point for us," Baxter added."No player can come into my office when I'm talking to them and go 'everything was fine, I don't know why we're reacting'."You need that sometimes, you don't need anybody having any second doubts that what's on the field isn't good enough."We had that and now things are changing, and you can feel a change. But I think we probably needed that and we needed someone to go 'this is not good enough, things have to change' and that's what's happened."

MANCHESTER UNITED are stuck with Jadon Sancho after he left Chelsea following the end of his loan. The England winger had a mixed time at Stamford Bridge, failing to live up to expectations again. 1 He did finish his time with the Blues with a goal in the hammering of Beal Betis in the Europa Conference final. But, according to David Ornstein, he is now leaving Chelsea to head back to United. There was a clause in his loan deal that meant Todd Boehly 's team had to sign him permanently. But after falling to agree terms on him staying, he will go to Old Trafford, for now. Chelsea are understood to have paid a £5 million penalty to United. The 25-year-old will now explore his options in the Premier League and Europe over his next move. It is understood he is not in Red Devils manager Ruben Amorim's plans for the 2025-26 Premier League season. Sancho is heading into an important stage of his career, to find a place to settle. And he will still have hopes of playing for England again in the future. The Three Lions will head to the United States next summer for the 2026 World Cup. Gary Neville names four Man Utd stars who must leave this summer and the transfer exit that's a ‘step too far'
GARY NEVILLE has named five Manchester United players he thinks should leave the club this summer. The Red Devils endured a nightmare season both in the Premier League and in Europe this term. 6 They finished the campaign 15th in the Prem table with 18 fewer points than last season. United also failed to qualify for European football after losing to Spurs in the Europa League final last month. Several players are now expected to be sold in the coming months, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe targetting a rebuild. And former right-back Neville has named the players he thinks should be in line for the axe. Speaking on the It's Called Soccer podcast, the 50-year-old said: " Marcus Rashford has to leave for him and the club. I think that ship has sailed and he needs to find himself another club. "I would worry that Aston Villa haven't announced that they're keeping him already because I think that could have been an easy deal to do with United if they were going to keep him, so it sounds to me like Villa aren't going to keep him. "I would say for Marcus' sake and for United's sake that it feels like that path has come to an end." Neville can also see a similar situation unfolding with Jadon Sancho following his Chelsea loan spell. He continued: "I feel a little bit similarly with him as I do with Marcus. I'd be a bit concerned that Chelsea haven't made the noises that they're going to keep him. "Over there, there's a different tactical awareness, there's a different technical ability and there's a way of playing that's just more suited to players. "The players I'm referring to are players like Kleberson or Diego Forlan. It just didn't quite happen for them but they had really good careers and I think there are players like that who just aren't suited to a league. "I think Antony is perfect for Spain and, again, somebody who Manchester United should facilitate leaving. It's best for Antony and best for the club." Alejandro Garnacho has been embroiled in a public fallout with United head coach Ruben Amorim over the last few weeks. The 20-year-old was left furious after being limited to just 20 minutes of match time in last month's Europa League final defeat in Bilbao. His brother then claimed that he was "thrown under the bus" by Amorim. Garnacho has now been told that he will not have a place in the Man Utd squad next season. And Neville believes the club should cash-in on the forward when they can. He continued: "I think if players are taking on the manager and if players are questioning the manager in public through social media or through other means, the manager has to win. "If the manager doesn't win, the manager has to leave and I don't think that's going to happen this time. That's happened far too many times before. I think Garnacho will leave purely because of that, I think they've had enough. "Garnacho can play in the Premier League, no doubt, but I think he'll love it in Spain, he'll thrive over there, he'll score goals. He'll probably be someone next season that we're all looking back on thinking, 'Why didn't Manchester United keep him?', that type of thing will probably happen, there's an element of that, but I think he has to go. "That's not me throwing my toys out the pram and saying, 'Get him out the club'… no, for him and the club, I think it's right that he goes. "Those four players should leave, not just because Manchester United should let them go, but because they should go and find themselves a place in their lives where they can go and play football because it's not at Old Trafford." Kobbie Mainoo is another player who has been linked with an exit in recent months. However, Neville insists he still has a place at Old Trafford and could be a crucial asset for the Red Devils in the future. "Mainoo, no. That's a step too far," he concluded. "If we can't give Kobbie Mainoo a job in that two in midfield… I look at Mainoo and the way he plays football and I think a top club would want him. "Why can't we make him a top player? If he's one of ours and he's shown talent. "I don't know what's gone on there in the last few months. He's obviously had some injuries which has caused him a problem so he needs to stay fit, but I'd like to think he could be one of that two in midfield that Ruben Amorim plays. "It's probably not Casemiro as his partner and it's probably not Ugarte as his partner, it's probably someone else in there who is better than those two, if I'm being honest. "But we should be building around Kobbie Mainoo in central midfield and not because he's come through the ranks." The Red Devils have already made one signing this summer. Matheus Cunha has joined in a £62.5million transfer from Wolves. Bryan Mbuemo looks set to follow after choosing to join the club over any other Premier League side. 6
