The forecast this weekend looks to be sunny and cool, and these enticing cultural gatherings offer a perfect excuse to leave the house and connect with others.
Live music, short films, and art in conjunction with the museum's exhibit, 'Joseph Beuys: In Defense of Nature,' makes for an immersive outdoor and indoor Spring event. On Friday, Osees (formerly Thee Oh Sees) will headline the outdoor stage along with German artist and experimental musician Alva Noto. Harpist Mary Lattimore and accordionist Walt McClements perform inside along with Barr performing from her Kill Rock Stars label era. OUTCRY: Alchemists of Rage, about activist and sexual abuse survivor Whitney Bradshaw's photographs of women screaming in cathartic group sessions, will also be screened. Saturday, local punkers Sage Against the Machine and L.A. producer Money Mark rock crowds outdoors after Shabazz Palaces and German experimental musician Michael Rother (of Harmonia and NEU!). The all-ages, multi-faceted arts event is meant to delve into 'the impact of our collective experiences, the healing of body and mind, environmental consciousness, political activism, and social change.'
Known for its revelatory entertainment panels featuring full cast gatherings from the biggest shows on television, The Paley Center for Media's multi-day festival also offers sneak peeks, previews, and premieres. This year's events highlight hits such as Apple TV+'s Severence, Netflix's Cobra Kai, Disney's Agatha All Along, and the work of Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel).
'Chic pajamas, silk robes, and an appetite for champagne' are suggested for this sultry PJ party inside the Four Seasons Hotel's Veil & Velvet speakeasy. The luxurious evening promises champagne towers, caviar bumps, and plush five-star comfort. Live music and surprises also await, and if you don't have the right attire, the hotel's new sleepwear line is available for purchase (and embroidered personalization) on-site.
Postponed from an earlier February date, the 126th procession gathers marching bands, lion dancers, Miss Chinatown Los Angeles, and spectators in Chinatown to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
Hosted by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Tarell Alvin McCraney (co-writer of the Oscar-winning 2016 film Moonlight, adapted from his play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue), this screening event features five shorts by YoungArts' award-winning filmmakers. UCLA's Center for the Art of Performance (CAP UCLA) provides this showcase for YoungArts to further its mission of advancing new voices and views in filmmaking and storytelling.
The Academy Museum's new exhibit chronicling the revered Parasite director's work gets an authentic and immersive boost via a dinner experience at the adjacent Fanny's restaurant. The new Korean Sunday Supper series, inspired by the Oscar-winning filmmaker, is designed by Chef Jun Bum Oh, who infuses his native Korean heritage into the menu.
Spring is here and so are the fluttering winged creatures that bring color and whimsy to the season. Starting Sunday, you can walk among hundreds of butterflies (30 different species) in NHM's outdoor, open-air netted enclosure. See the lifecycle of the butterfly right before your eyes, from eggs to caterpillars and chrysalises. Museum experts will share info and answer questions during scheduled walk-throughs from now until summer.
Korean beauty brands have become hot in the U.S. thanks to skincare results and the influencers who share them online. Medicube's cute packaging has been a standout and their pastel pink pop-up on Fairfax and Melrose is a must see to learn about the brand's products, including its magic wand booster device as used by stars like Hailey Bieber. Admission is free with exclusive deals, selfie moments and goodies on site. Make your appt here.

Hearts Melt at What Dog Does Every Afternoon When He Sees the School Bus

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A dog has developed the most heartwarming daily habit whenever he catches sight of a yellow school bus outside the family home. Every day around the same time, Thor watches and waits. He knows exactly what to look out for and, considering he's a dog, has a pretty good idea of when to expect it. "We brought Thor home in November of 2023," Deanna Rogers told Newsweek. The mom, who lives with her husband and two young sons in Cape May Court House, New Jersey, said that, before Thor, they had a very specific idea in mind for what kind of dog they wanted. "We specifically wanted a German shepherd because they're known for their loyalty to their family," Rogers said. "Because we live on a very busy main road, we wanted a dog who wouldn't be so willing to run off." In a busy household that also includes two rescue ponies, a pair of goats and some chickens, Thor plays an important role in keeping the peace and appears to thrive in it. "He could spend all day outside, just keeping an eye on the farm animals and watching our boys play," Rogers said. "His favorite thing to do is definitely very long walks and car rides! He is insanely smart and protective without coming across as intimidating. When it comes down to it, he's a big baby." Thor's intelligence shouldn't come as a shock. Stanley Coren, author of The Intelligence of Dogs and professor emeritus at the University of British Columbia's Department of Psychology, ranks the breed among the most intelligent. "According to my research, the seven dog breeds with the highest working and obedience intelligence, starting with the brightest are: Border collie, poodle, German shepherd, golden retriever, Doberman pinscher, Shetland sheepdog and Labrador retriever," Coren told Newsweek. However, Thor appears especially smart, if a video posted to Rogers' TikTok, @deannarogers_, is anything to go by. It' is a compilation of the heartwarming daily habit Thor has picked up when Rogers' kids come home from school. "Thor started really becoming aware of the boys' school routine this year," Rogers said. "In the afternoon, he would start watching out the window around the time he knew they came home, anticipating the big yellow school bus to arrive out front of our house." One day, Thor opted to take things one step further. "He just decided to go greet the boys at the foot of the bus steps," Rogers said. Things quickly escalated from there in the sweetest way imaginable. "After that, some of the kids would call his name and he would go right onto the bus, take a lap down the aisle and head off," Rogers said. "It became a regular occurrence." Thor's antics have made him a firm favorite with everyone at her sons' school. "Not only do our kids love seeing Thor greet them at the bus, all of the other kids and the bus driver love it, too," Rogers said. Now Thor's adorable escapades have gone viral, with the compilation clip posted to Rogers' TikTok, showing his regular visits to the bus, going viral with more than 23,000 views and counting. "He loves your son so much!! Good doggy," one viewer wrote, with a second commenting: "Oh my God this is the cutest, dogs deserve the world." A third meanwhile admitted they were "crying on the toilet" watching the footage. The response has blown Rogers away but, given how much she knows and loves Thor, it is not a surprise to see others feeling the same. "When I shared the video, I knew people would feel the love that our dog has for our children and it would make people smile," Rogers said. "Dogs are just the best, but our Thor is really up there with the best of the best." It looks like quite a few New Jersey school kids would agree.

Jason Segel on Harrison Ford's Reaction to Nude Scene: ‘Great Dick'

How I Met Your Mother star Jason Segel recently shared an interesting story about his Shrinking co-star Harrison Ford, in which the veteran actor praised Segel after viewing his film Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Reacting to Segel's famous naked scene in the movie, Ford jokingly imparted a compliment to the comedian regarding his genitals, as revealed by Segel himself. Here's everything you need to know about the hilarious moment between the two Hollywood stars. During his recent discussion with Seth Rogen on Variety's latest iteration of its Actors on Actors segment, Jason Segel was questioned by his Knocked Up co-star about how he was able to recruit Harrison Ford in Apple TV+'s Shrinking series. He remarked, 'We got Harrison Ford because Harrison Ford is the kind of person you can make an offer to so that for three days you can say, 'We made an offer to Harrison Ford,' and then you'll pick the real guy.' Jason Segel then noted, 'He didn't know anything about me so he asked, 'Can I see some of his work?' and they sent him—Brett Goldstein went and met with him and they had a really nice meeting—and then they sent him End of the Tour and Forgetting Sarah Marshall.' After having witnessed Segel's acting chops in the two films, Ford reached out to Bill Lawrence, the showrunner for Shrinking, to convey his thoughts about Segel. 'And apparently, Bill Lawrence got a text that said, 'I'm in, and tell the kid, great dick,'' Jason Segel disclosed. Rogen had a hilarious reaction to his long-time friend's amusing anecdote about Ford, with The Studio co-creator noting, '[That's] all you need,' accompanied by his signature belly laugh. Featuring Jason Segel and Harrison Ford in the lead, Shrinking has spawned two seasons so far, with a confirmed third season yet to receive an official release date from Apple TV+. The Long-Awaited ‘Mass Effect' Show Has a Showrunner Now

Prime Video's upcoming Mass Effect show is progressing slowly, but surely. On Friday, Deadline revealed the live-action series gained Doug Jung as its showrunner. Jung, who most may remember as the co-writer for 2016's Star Trek Beyond, recently ended a showrunner/executive producer stint for Apple TV+'s Chief of War. He'll be working alongside writer Dan Casey, and both will EP for the series alongside franchise producer Mike Gamble. As Deadline notes, this is a 'major step forward' in the show's development, which was first teased all the way back in 2021, then had its existence reaffirmed back in 2024. To date, Prime Video's kept mum on what exactly Casey's pitch was for the Mass Effect show. Among fans, the general thinking is that it'll just adapt the initial trilogy of Commander Shepard gathering allies to fight the Reapers. (This also seemed to be the plan when a movie seemed likely back in 2007 after the first game came out.) But shows like Castlevania and Prime Video's own Fallout have taken a different approach that tells an original story inside the worlds of those series. (Fallout in particular carries itself like a Fallout 5 we're getting to watch but not play.) Others, like Tomb Raider and Dragon Age, continued (or hoped to) the stories of the games they're based on. There's certainly different routes for the Mass Effect series to take, and we'll be interested to learn Jung and Casey's approach in due time.
