After a 52-year gap since the last top-tier women's event was held at the London grasscourt club, it was fitting that twice Wimbledon winner Kvitova opened proceedings on a court named after former British Wimbledon champion Andy Murray. After an impressive start on the pristine centre court lawn in front of a sizeable crowd, however, the Czech was unable to hold off her younger opponent who prevailed 2-6 6-4 6-4. Kvitova, who won her titles at the All England Club in 2011 and 2014, made her comeback from a 17-month maternity break in February and gained entry to the tournament via a protected ranking. After holding serve in a marathon fifth game, the 35-year-old surged on to win the opening set and looked on course for only her second victory since returning. The rust was apparent though as world number 23 Haddad Maia worked her way back into the match and claimed the win. After levelling the match she got an early break in the deciding set and that proved decisive as she sealed a clash against American third seed Emma Navarro. "For sure (Petra) is won of the best players on this surface and it's a privilege to be here," Haddad Maia said. German qualifier Tatjana Maria also made it through as she beat former U.S. Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez 7-6 6-2. (Reporting by Martyn Herman, editing by Ed Osmond)

Australia defend their title against a South African side making a first appearance in the final on what could be dryer than usual pitch at Lord's and where the seam attacks are expected to dominate. "I think spin will play a big part, particularly as the game wears on," Smith told a press conference on Monday. "We've only been here a week, but I think it's been pretty dry start to the season over here. There hasn't there been too much rain, which is rare for England. "It does look like quite a dry surface and I think the footmarks will definitely come into play as the game wears on." Smith, who is expected to bat at number four, has enjoyed success at Lord's with a double century in the Ashes a decade ago and another ton against England two years ago. "It takes a little bit of time getting used to the slope on the one end," he said. "You feel like you're falling over a little bit while at the other end you feel quite tall. "It takes a couple of deliveries just to get used to that from both ends. I think each time you play out here, you certainly get value for your shots, particularly hitting the ball down the hill. It races away, so it can be a nice wicket to bat on as we've seen over the years as well." Conditions, however, can change quickly in England. "If there's a bit of cloud about and the balls swing around, it can get tricky," Smith said. "Batting on this surface is about just summing it up and playing what's in front of you and being able to adapt accordingly." Australia have not had much practice in the game's first-class format over recent months. "All the batters feel like they're in a good place, so now just excited to go out and play. Lord's is a place we traditionally played pretty good cricket, so we're excited about the prospect of coming up against South Africa," Smith added. (Editing by Ed Osmond)

Soccer-Doja Cat, J Balvin and Tems headline Club World Cup Final halftime show
(Reuters) - American rapper Doja Cat, Colombian singer J Balvin and Nigerian singer Tems will headline the Club World Cup final halftime show in the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, FIFA said on Monday. World soccer's ruling body will also work with international education and advocacy organisation Global Citizen and British rock band Coldplay for the show on July 13. "Final halftime show will be curated by Chris Martin of Coldplay to support the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which aims to raise $100 million to improve access to quality education," FIFA said. The expanded 32-team Club World Cup runs from June 14-July 13 in the United States. Lionel Messi's Inter Miami face Egypt's Al-Ahly in the opening fixture on June 14 in Miami.
