Drizzle helps Delhi-NCR cool off, monsoon may hit region early

Noida: Overcast skies and a drop in temperature across most parts of NCR brought much-needed relief on Monday after last week's sweltering heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast spatially well-distributed rainfall and thunderstorms across the region on June 20, said an official.
While parts of Noida witnessed brief spells of rain, neighbouring Ghaziabad remained dry. IMD has kept Noida and Ghaziabad under a yellow alert for the remainder of the week, forecasting thunderstorms and rainfall activity across the region.
According to the IMD's Lucknow centre, western UP —including Gautam Budh Nagar and Ghaziabad— is likely to witness scattered rain and thundershowers throughout the week. On Monday, an orange alert was issued for several parts of western UP with the possibility of heavy rainfall, though Noida only recorded a drizzle and Ghaziabad saw overcast skies without any rain.
Greater Noida West experienced windy conditions, while persistent cloud cover kept the sun at bay across Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad. Cloud-induced dip in temperatures brought some comfort despite lingering humidity.
Richa Mallick, a resident of Greater Noida, said she was hoping for a spell of rain but was still satisfied with the overcast sky. "This break was much awaited as the heat conditions were becoming unbearable," she said, adding that the weather began improving from Sunday night.

Meanhwile, IMD on Monday issued a yellow alert for Delhi, warning of severe thunderstorms over the next four days, which could provide relief from the intense heat. Despite a significant reduction in the maximum temperature, elevated humidity levels continued to cause outdoor discomfort, with the heat index reaching 42 degrees Celsius.
The IMD announced on Monday that monsoon conditions were favourable for advancement, entering an "active" phase.
The monsoon is expected to cover the areas up to east Uttar Pradesh in two to three days. While Delhi typically receives the monsoon by June 27, this year's progress is slightly ahead of the schedule. IMD has, however, not specified the exact arrival date.
Delhi experienced scattered light rainfall on Monday, with cloudy conditions leading to lower temperatures. The maximum temperature was 35 degrees Celsius, four degrees below normal. IMD predicted rain for the rest of the week."We expect overcast skies to persist on Tuesday and Wednesday. Light to moderate rain is likely in the city, with chances of gusty winds touching 60km/hour," said an official.
Thunderstorms are also predicted. IMD forecast maximum temperature between 33 and 35 degrees Celsius on Tuesday and 34-36 degrees on Wednesday.
