EDGE Group partners with Wazoku to launch global ‘Drone in a Box' innovation challenge

ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD) EDGE, one of the world's leading advanced technology and defence groups, has announced a strategic partnership with innovation scale-up Wazoku. Their first collaboration launches a global open innovation challenge via the Wazoku Crowd platform to identify next-generation 'Drone in a Box' solutions.Open to innovators, start-ups, universities, and established organisations worldwide, the challenge seeks fully integrated systems that combine a drone, docking and charging station, ground control platform, and operational software into a single, scalable unit.EDGE is offering a total prize fund of $20,000 – awarding $15,000 to the winning entry and $5,000 for the runner-up. Finalists will be invited to EDGE to demonstrate their solutions, with the potential for further development or acquisition.The challenge addresses rising global demand for autonomous UAV systems that are cost-effective, rapidly deployable, and resilient in harsh environments. EDGE is particularly interested in solutions requiring minimal human intervention and featuring AI-driven autonomy, predictive maintenance, advanced navigation, and mobile or remote deployment.Ahmed Al Khoori, SVP – Strategy & Excellence, EDGE Group, said, 'This challenge represents a significant opportunity to help shape the future of defence technology. The FALAJ 3-class missile boat has also been selected by the UAE Navy, with the first vessel, ALTAF, formally commissioned into service in February 2025. With the latest agreement, these advanced 62-metre vessels are tailored to meet Kuwait's operational requirements, offering high performance, advanced combat systems, and enhanced capabilities for littoral defence operations. This latest contract reinforces EDGE's position as a trusted partner for customers seeking turnkey defence solutions and integrated long-term support, while driving the UAE's strategic objectives for defence exports and industrial collaboration. In March this year, EDGE, one of the world's leading advanced technology and defence groups, and CMN NAVAL, a world-renowned naval shipbuilding group specialising in the design, engineering, and construction of superior naval and commercial vessels, and mega yachts, have formally agreed to create a new Abu Dhabi-based shipbuilding joint venture (JV) named AD NAVAL (ADN). Leveraging an existing order pipeline worth approximately EUR 7 billion, the JV will bring together both companies under an exclusivity agreement on the segment of high value small to mid-size naval vessels including Corvettes, Offshore Patrol Vehicles (OPVs), High-speed Interceptors, Trimarans, and Landing Craft. The move will see EDGE significantly expand the scope of its capabilities in the naval domain. EDGE, holding a 51 percent stake in the new company, will collaborate with CMN NAVAL on sales, commercial activities, and engineering. It will also establish a design bureau which will assume intellectual property rights for all future designs. The JV will grant EDGE access to CMN NAVAL's global supply chain and its advanced Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) system and software, enhancing cost efficiency and operational performance through predictive and preventative maintenance, as well as the provision and management of all spare parts. The scope of the JV will also explore Combat Systems Integration (CSI) of EDGE's advanced autonomous air and sea, and smart weapons solutions onto vessels built by the new company. The announcement comes closely on the heels of an initial partnership agreement signed at IDEX 2025 last month in Abu Dhabi, where both parties laid the foundations for collaboration across multiple domains, including the development of cutting-edge naval platforms, system integration, maintenance, and commercial initiatives, aiming to set new benchmarks in naval innovation, leveraging next-generation technologies such as AI-driven autonomous systems, advanced combat solutions, and modular ship designs. The joint venture will create valuable direct employment opportunities for skilled personnel in the UAE, as well as related third-party opportunities across its global supply chain. UAE, Kuwait sign multiple agreements to boost cooperation
The UAE and Kuwait have signed a comprehensive set of agreements aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation across sectors including AI, health, energy, education, defence and diplomacy. The agreements were formalised at Kuwait's Bayan Palace during the official visit of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Presidential Court of the UAE. In the defence sector, UAE's EDGE Group signed a AED9 billion (US$2.45 billion) contract with Kuwait's Ministry of Defence for the acquisition of 'Falaj 3' class missile boats. It represents the largest naval shipbuilding export in the region and ranks among the most valuable naval exports globally. Additionally, Kuwait Real Estate Company, through its subsidiary IFA Hotels and Resorts, signed a AED198 million contract with UAE-based Darwish Engineering to execute infrastructure works for the Al Tay Hills residential project in Sharjah. Another agreement saw Kuwait Investment Authority joining the Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Partnership along with MGX, BlackRock, Global Infrastructure Partners, and Microsoft, to boost AI infrastructure investment. The newly signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) also cover health, diplomacy, road and land transport infrastructure, social development, advanced technology, education, oil and gas, energy and investment. Several MoUs also address cooperation in combating human trafficking, legal cooperation, data protection and information exchange in joint security initiatives. Arabian Post Staff -Dubai EDGE, the United Arab Emirates' premier defence technology conglomerate, has secured a landmark AED 9 billion contract with the Kuwait Ministry of Defence for the supply of eight FALAJ-3 class missile boats. This agreement represents the largest naval shipbuilding export in the Middle East and ranks among the highest-value naval export deals globally. The ministry highlighted that the contract aligns with Kuwait's strategic objectives to bolster its naval capabilities and ensure the security of its territorial waters. The FALAJ-3 class has also been adopted by the UAE Navy, with the first vessel, ALTAF, commissioned into service in February 2025. This operational deployment underscores the vessel's proven capability and performance in regional waters. The signing ceremony was attended by Sheikh Dr. Abdullah Meshal Mubarak Al Sabah, Undersecretary of the Kuwait Ministry of Defence; Dr. Matar Al Neyadi, UAE Ambassador to Kuwait; Hamad Al Marar, Managing Director and CEO of EDGE; and Omar Al Zaabi, President of Trading and Mission Support at EDGE. This contract is not the first collaboration between EDGE and Kuwait. Previously, EDGE subsidiary ADSB delivered eight landing craft to Kuwait and provided maintenance, repair, and overhaul services to the Kuwaiti Coast Guard. The current agreement further solidifies the defence partnership between the two nations and demonstrates EDGE's commitment to delivering comprehensive defence solutions. The FALAJ-3 class vessels are based on the Fearless-class ships originally designed by Singapore's ST Engineering for the Republic of Singapore Navy. EDGE has adapted and enhanced these designs to meet the specific needs of regional clients, offering a versatile platform capable of operating in both littoral and blue waters. The vessels can be equipped with a range of weapons, including missiles, rockets, and medium-calibre guns, providing robust defensive capabilities against various threats.
