Powerful 6.2-magnitude quake hits off Istanbul coast

CNA23-04-2025

24 Apr 2025 01:27AM (Updated: 24 Apr 2025 01:33AM) ISTANBUL: A 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit the Sea of Marmara near Istanbul on Wednesday (Apr 23), with its impact and that of multiple aftershocks forcing thousands out onto the streets in panic across Türkiye's largest city. The quake was followed by more than 50 aftershocks, some very powerful, the interior minister said, although there were no reports of major damage or serious injury. "An earthquake of 6.2 magnitude occurred in Silivri, Sea of Marmara, Istanbul," Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on X, adding that it was felt in the surrounding provinces. The initial quake struck at 12.49 pm (0949 GMT) at a depth of 6.92km under the sea, which lies to the south of the city, and lasted 13 seconds, he said. "By 3.12 pm (1212 GMT), 51 aftershocks - the largest of which was 5.9 magnitude - had been recorded," he said. As buildings shook, people rushed onto the streets where crowds of worried-looking people stared at their mobile phones for information or made calls, an AFP correspondent said. "I just felt an earthquake, I've got to get out," a shaken-looking decorator, who did not want to give his name, said while fleeing a fourth-storey apartment where he was working near the city's Galata Tower.
Istanbul governor Davut Gul said nobody had died in the quake or the aftershocks but confirmed that hospitals were treating "151 people injured when they jumped or tried to jump from a height in panic". (AP Photo/Khalil Hamra) The injuries were not life-threatening, he added. "There is no destruction to residential buildings in the city but an abandoned building collapsed in Fatih District without causing any deaths or injuries," the governor's office said on X. Footage posted by the state news agency Anadolu showed the minaret of a mosque in the Beylikduzu district just west of the historic peninsula swaying during the initial quake. But there were no reports of other buildings collapsing in the sprawling city of 16 million people, Yerlikaya told TRT public television. Schools and universities, which were closed on Wednesday when Turkey was marking National Sovereignty Day, would remain closed until the weekend, the education ministry said.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he was "following the developments closely". People gather outdoors following an earthquake shock with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2, in Istanbul, Turkey, Wednesday, April 23, 2025. (AP Photo/Khalil Hamra)
"We all panicked and just ran. There's absolutely nothing else we can do," a street seller called Yusuf told AFP. The tremors could be felt as far away as Bulgaria, according to AFP journalists in the capital Sofia.
Silivri, on the megacity's western outskirts, has made headlines in the past month as the location where Istanbul's mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was jailed after his arrest in a graft probe that his critics say is politically motivated. Also there are a number of students detained for joining the mass protests that erupted nationwide over the move against Imamoglu, Erdogan's biggest political rival. But no one was hurt, the Parents Solidarity Network said on X. "The earthquake in Istanbul was most strongly felt in Silivri but our children are fine. There is no problem at the prison," the group wrote.
Some of the city's southern districts lie just 15 kilometres from the North Anatolian Fault, which is distinct from the equally active East Anatolian Fault. Türkiye's cultural and economic capital is home to up to 20 million people, many of whom are still haunted by memories of the last "Big One" that struck part of the city in 1999. Around 20,000 people were killed in two massive quakes that devastated Türkiye's densely populated northwest - including parts of Istanbul - three months apart in 1999 as the eastern strand of the fault line ruptured. Seismologists have calculated a 47-per cent chance of an earthquake with a magnitude above 7.3 hitting Istanbul within 30 years.
The last tremor to be felt in Istanbul was in mid November, when a quake caused brief panic but no damage or injuries. Istanbul earthquake

Powerful 6.3 magnitude quake shakes Bogota

The shallow quake struck at 9.08am local time some 170km east of Bogota, Colombia, said the USGS. PHOTO: SCREENGRAB FROM USGS People waiting on the street after an earthquake in Bogota on June 8. PHOTO: AFP BOGOTA - A powerful, shallow 6.3-magnitude earthquake shook the Colombian capital of Bogota early on June 8 , according to AFP reporters on the ground and the United States Geological Survey. The shallow quake struck at 9.08am local time near the city of Paratebueno in central Colombia, some 170km east of Bogota, the USGS said. Buildings shook, sirens blared around the capital and people rushed out into the streets, while social media users posted videos of swinging lights and furniture, though the images could not be immediately verified by AFP. Scores of people gathered in parks and outside buildings in their pajamas, with parents trying to calm frightened kids and others looking for pets that had run away. 'This was very strong,' said an elderly lady in Bogota trying to make her way down several flights of steps. Central Colombia is in a zone of high seismic activity. A 6.2 magnitude quake there in 1999, not far from Ansermanuevo, claimed nearly 1,200 lives. AFP Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Tehran says at least 13 Iranians die during haj pilgrimage

PHOTO: AFP Tehran says at least 13 Iranians die during haj pilgrimage TEHRAN – At least 13 Iranians died while performing the haj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia amid rising temperatures in the holy cities, Iranian state media reported on June 7. 'As of Friday, June 6, the total number of Iranian pilgrims who have passed away during haj 2025 has reached 13,' the health and treatment operations unit of the Iranian Red Crescent Society said in a statement carried by the official Irna news agency. 'In recent days, temperatures in the holy cities of Saudi Arabia have risen to 47 deg C, which can lead to severe heat stroke among pilgrims,' Irna said, adding that 86,700 Iranians went to Saudi Arabia in 2025 for the pilgrimage. In 2024, more than 1,300 people, including 22 Iranians, died at the haj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia where temperatures hit 51.8 deg C. Heat stress occurs when the body's natural cooling systems are overwhelmed, causing symptoms ranging from dizziness and headaches to organ failure and death. The statement on June 7 also advised pilgrims to avoid direct sun exposure, stay hydrated and take other precautions to reduce the risk of heatstroke. Climate change is driving an increasing number of deadly heatwaves across the globe, with the World Health Organisation estimating that heat kills at least half a million people every year, warning that the real figure could be up to 30 times higher. Guatemala's Fuego volcano eruption cools after over 700 evacuated

GUATEMALA CITY - Guatemala's Fuego volcano shot ash miles into the air on Friday as authorities said they had evacuated more than 700 people from their homes as a precaution, before declaring the eruption over after some 30 hours of intense activity. Earlier in the day, seismology agency INSIVUMEH reported that a lava stream was building up around the crater of the volcano, which lies about 18 km (11 miles) from the central city of Antigua Guatemala, while some ash plumes reached around 5 km into the air. Disaster agency CONRED said they had evacuated over 700 people as from the nearby areas of Escuintla, Sacatepequez and Chimaltenango as a precaution. Local families, many with small children, spent the night on green camping cots in nearby shelters. Olga Lopez, who was evacuated from the town of El Porvenir, told Reuters she felt it was important to prioritize people's safety. "Sometimes when we grow up we can be stubborn and we don't want to leave because of material things like our houses, but protecting our children's lives is more important," she said. Activity at the volcano increased from Wednesday afternoon, but at midday (1800 GMT) on Friday, INSIVUMEH said it considered the eruption that began some 30 hours earlier to be over. The agency said that as camera footage no longer showed spurting lava or pulsations in the ground, and as there were no longer large amounts of ash suspended in the atmosphere, "it is possible to consider the eruption that began June 4 has ended." This followed some 30 hours of smoke plumes, lava flows and a downward surge of pyroclastic flows, it added. The Fuego volcano is known for its frequent activity. In June 2018, its most violent eruption in about four decades killed more than 200 people. Around the size of the U.S. state of Tennessee, the Central American nation is home to 37 volcanoes, though many of them are considered dormant or extinct.
