Families of South Korea's Jeju Air plane crash victims file criminal complaint
Families of victims of a fiery Jeju Air plane crash have filed a criminal complaint against 15 people including South Korean government officials and airline safety representatives, according to their lawyers.
The relatives of 72 of the victims from the Jeju Air flight JC-2216 disaster on December 29 said on Tuesday that they were initiating the legal action against officials including transport minister Park Sang-woo.
They are alleging negligence in managing safety risks as well as violations of the Aviation Safety Act.
The crash at South Korea's Muan Airport killed 179 people in the country's deadliest-ever air disaster.
A statement released by lawyers of the bereaved families said a more thorough investigation was needed on the decision to attempt a return to land immediately after a bird strike, on the maintenance of the aircraft's engine, and on whether the construction of a runway embankment was appropriate.
The Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 overshot Muan Airport's runway as it made an emergency landing and crashed into an embankment containing navigation equipment known as localisers, killing all but two of the 181 passengers and crew members on board.
Except for two Thai nationals, everyone on board was South Korean.
In making the emergency landing, Flight JC-2216 did not extend its landing gear and was unable to slow down before colliding with a fence in the embankment.
Transport ministry officials confirmed after the crash that the plane's pilots told air traffic control the aircraft had suffered a bird strike shortly after the control tower warned of birds in the area.
As of New Year's Day, all remains of the victims of the crash had been formally identified.
Their bereaved families were taken to the accident site to mourn and pay their respects.
There were just two survivors from the crash — a 33-year-old flight attendant and another 25-year-old crew member.
In the wake of the crash, South Korea entered seven days of national mourning to mark the tragedy and a civil investigation was called by the country's government.
A separate investigation was launched by the US National Transportation Safety Board because the plane had been designed and built in the United States.

Brother jailed for 'depraved' violent sexual abuse committed against sisters over several years
Depraved and violent torture is how an ACT Supreme Court judge has described the actions of a brother found guilty of sexually abusing his two sisters over several years, as he was sentenced to 16-and-a-half years in jail. In December last year a jury found the offender guilty of more than 20 charges including incest, acts of indecency, unlawful confinement and rape. But before the trial even began there were pleas of guilty to at least 10 other similar charges, which included offences against a child under 10 and others against a child under 16, bringing the total number of convictions to 32. Details of the abuse have been suppressed, but Justice Belinda Baker has described the offences as degrading and of the utmost gravity, having a life-long impact on the victims. "They spent their childhoods being abused, or fearing imminent abuse, at the hands of their brother," Justice Baker said. "They both suffer, and will continue to suffer, immensely from the offender's actions. One sister was under 10 for most of the offending, the other under 12. The offender was between 14 and 18. Justice Baker noted a "number of the offences were accompanied by threats and derogatory insults". She said while it was true all sexual offences involve a degree of violence, the offences against particularly the younger sister "involved significant additional physical violence of a depraved nature". In her sentencing remarks Justice Baker also noted any motivation for the offending remained obscure, which was "deeply troubling". The court heard the offences began before the offender was 14, and before he was criminally responsible. In other evidence it was revealed he'd been exposed to pornography, when unsupervised, at a young age, and also suffered mental health issues. "The escalation of the offending to include offences with significant physical violence distinguishes it from cases in which the sexual conduct can be explained by the immaturity of the offender." Justice Baker found that the offender knew what he was doing was wrong by the time he was 14, and continued to offend for years, escalating the violence against particularly his younger sister. Justice Baker sentenced the offender to 13-and-a-half years for offences against one sister, and five years and eleven months for the crimes against his other sister. The sentence is to be suspended after 10 years.

‘Nothing worked': Haunting video hours before Air India crash
Shocking footage showed the Boeing 787 Dreamliner's interior with defective TV screens and 'no air conditioning at all' when it flew from Delhi to Ahmedadbad – two hours prior to the horror smash. Air India Flight AI171 was en route to London Gatwick when it crashed into a hostel used by doctors on Thursday. It had 242 people on board, including 53 Brits and 11 children. So far, 204 bodies have been recovered, and one Brit is believed to have survived. On X, Akash Vasta claimed that he had flown on the very same aircraft just two hours before it crashed. He posted horrifying footage which showed many parts of the plane not functioning properly during its second last ever flight. He said on X: 'I was in the same damn flight 2 hours before it took off from AMD. I came in this from DEL-AMD.' The shocked passenger added that he had 'noticed unusual things' in the plane which he suggested may have been telltale signs that it was defective. In the concerning footage, he can be heard saying: 'The AC is not working at all. And as usual, your TV screens are also not working, neither this button for calling the cabin crew.' He said: 'Nothing is working. Nothing! Not even the light is working.' The worried passenger asked: 'Is this what you are providing?' He also complained that he was 'sweating like hell' due to the lack of AC, and stated that this was why 'Air India is considered one of the worst airlines in the world'. It comes as one 40-year-old Brit, Ajay Kumar Vishwash, claimed that he cheated death after jumping off the flaming Air India jet before it crashed. Unbelievable footage showed Vishwash walking away from what is understood to be the crash site of the doomed Air India flight to London Gatwick. Vishwash, who still had his boarding pass, told Hindustan Times: '30 seconds after takeoff, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly.' Full harrowing CCTV footage has also now shown the Boeing 787 taking off before appearing to lose power in Ahmedabad in the west of India. The plane was flying to London Gatwick Airport and was carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew. Video showed the plane taxing down the runway before taking off at around 1.38pm local time from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. It also showed the plane take to the sky – before it appears to stop climbing and then plummet back down to earth. The flight then crashed in a fireball into a doctor's hostel. Police are now hunting through the rubble and wreckage for any survivors. According to flight tracking website Flightradar, the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner's final signal was received just seconds after takeoff. This was last logged at 1:38pm local time – less than a minute after it started the journey. It had only reached 625ft at the time, officials believe. In a statement the airline said: 'Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick was involved in an accident on 12 June 2025.' 'At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest opportunity.' Out of the 242 on board, 169 were Indian travellers, one Canadian and seven Portuguese nationals alongside the Brits.

Israel-Iran conflict live updates: Iran says ‘our revenge has started' as missiles strike major Israeli city
Welcome to our live coverage of events in the Middle East. The region remains on edge after Israel's surprise attack on targets throughout Iran yesterday. In recent hours, Iran has retaliated with missile strikes of its own, at least some of which broke through Israel's Iron Dome defence system and exploded in the city Tel Aviv. Residents have been told to stay in bomb shelters when instructed to by the authorities. 'Our revenge has just started, they will pay a high price for killing our commanders, scientists and people,' a senior Iranian official told Reuters. 'Nowhere in Israel will be safe,' they said. 'Our revenge will be painful.' The United States has confirmed it is helping Israel by shooting down some Iranian missiles. Iran is also claiming to have shot down an Israeli fighter jet and captured its pilot. Israel says that is untrue. Defence Minister Israel Katz reacted to Iran's retaliation by saying it had 'crossed red lines by launching missiles towards Israeli civilian areas'. 'Tehran will pay a heavy price,' he said. And Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a speech urging Iranian civilians to revolt against their nation's regime, made a similar pledge. 'The regime doesn't know what hit them. They don't know what will hit them,' he said.
