Private sector business activity rises to 8-month high in April: PMI data
India's private sector output grew at its fastest pace in eight months in April amid a sharp rise in new business, particularly 'buoyant' international demand for goods and services, said a private survey on Wednesday.
The HSBC flash India Composite Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), compiled by S&P Global, rose to 60.0, up from revised 59.5 in March. The index, which measures monthly change in the combined output of the two sectors, has been above the neutral 50 mark that separates growth from contraction for the 45th consecutive month.
"Private sector companies in India welcomed a sharp rise in total new business intakes at the start of the 2025/26 fiscal year, which was boosted by buoyant international demand for goods and services. Collectively, new export orders increased at the fastest pace since the series started in September 2014 as survey participants noted gains from across the globe," said the survey.
Manufacturing clocked a sharper upturn in new business orders than service. Manufacturing flash PMI, which is a composite measure of new orders, output, employment, supplier delivery times, and inventory, improved to 58.4 in April from 58.1 in March.
'Companies operating in India's private sector suggested that output levels had been raised in response to efficiency gains, positive demand trends and successful advertising. Some panellists also reported an improvement in international competitiveness as a result of the rupee's depreciation against the US dollar,' said the survey.
"New export orders accelerated sharply, likely buoyed by the 90-day pause in the implementation of tariffs," said Pranjul Bhandari, chief India economist at HSBC, referring to US President Donald Trump's decision to defer by 90 days his decision to impose tariffs on dozens of countries.
'As a result, output and employment grew, for both, manufacturers and service providers. Cost inflation was in line with March levels, but prices charged rose a tad faster, leading to improved margins," she said.
Amid 'intensification of capacity pressures', companies in both sectors continued to hire additional staff. 'Anecdotal evidence showed that full- and part-time staff had been recruited in April. Rates of job creation were equal at goods producers and service providers.'
Flash PMI records 75 per cent to 85 per cent of the 800 responses from services and manufacturing firms each month. The final manufacturing PMI figure for April will be released on May 2; services and composite PMI figures will be released on May 6.

Iran says no sanctions relief in US nuclear proposal
Iran's parliament speaker said on Sunday that the latest US proposal for a nuclear deal does not include the lifting of sanctions, state media reported as negotiations appear to have hit a roadblock. The two foes have held five rounds of Omani-mediated talks since April, seeking to replace a landmark agreement between Tehran and world powers that set restrictions on Iran's nuclear activities in return for sanctions relief, before US President Donald Trump abandoned the accord during his first term in 2018. In a video aired on Iranian state TV, parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said that "the US plan does not even mention the lifting of sanctions". He called it a sign of dishonesty, accusing the Americans of seeking to impose a "unilateral" agreement that Tehran would not accept. "The delusional US president should know better and change his approach if he is really looking for a deal," Ghalibaf said. On May 31, after the fifth round of talks, Iran said it had received "elements" of a US proposal, with officials later taking issue with "ambiguities" in the draft text. The US and its Western allies have long accused the Islamic republic of seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, a charge Iran has consistently denied, insisting that its atomic programme was solely for peaceful purposes. Key issues in the negotiations have been the removal of biting economic sanctions and uranium enrichment. Tehran says it has the right to enrich uranium under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, while the Trump administration has called any Iranian enrichment a "red line". Trump, who has revived his "maximum pressure" campaign of sanction on Iran since taking office in January, has repeatedly said it will not be allowed any uranium enrichment under a potential deal. On Tuesday, Iran's top negotiator, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, said the country "will not ask anyone for permission to continue enriching uranium". According to the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency , Iran is the only non-nuclear-weapon state in the world that enriches uranium up to 60 percent still short of the 90 percent threshold needed for a nuclear warhead. Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday rejected the latest US proposal and said enrichment was "key" to Iran's nuclear programme. The IAEA Board of Governors is scheduled to meet in Vienna later this month and discuss Iran's nuclear activities. pdm/ami

BEE appreciates APSECM and southern SDAs for successfully implementing its Standards & Labelling Program
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has expressed satisfaction over the active participation of all State Designated Agencies (SDAs), particularly the proactive Southern SDAs, including the AP State Energy Conservation Mission (SECM), for successfully implementing the Standards & Labelling Program (S&LP). In an official release, the BEE has urged SDAs to sustain the momentum by intensifying efforts to promote the Behaviour-Based Energy Saving Practices (2BESP), crucial in combating climate change and reducing electricity consumption. According to the BEE, the 2BESP initiative has the potential to save up to 22.50 billion kWh of energy annually. To realise this potential, the BEE emphasised the need for targeted awareness and implementation campaigns at State-level. During an interactive session on the impact of 5-star-rated appliances on Sunday, senior BEE officials, including Deputy Director General Ashok Kumar, Secretary Milind Deore, and Directors Abhishek Sharma and Karman Sheikh, highlighted the importance of adopting high-efficiency appliances such as air conditioners, refrigerators, and ceiling fans for achieving a substantial reduction in both electricity usage and consumer bills. The officials encouraged SDAs to collaborate with Residential Welfare Associations (RWAs) and group housing societies to spread awareness about maintaining air conditioner temperatures at 24°C or higher in line with the Government of India's national energy efficiency campaign for both commercial and residential buildings. With India's building sector currently accounting for 35–40% of the country's total energy consumption, the BEE stressed the need for urgent adoption of energy efficiency measures by SDAs. AP was one of the front-runners in rolling out the S&LP.
