The pros and cons of updating your iPhone with iOS 26

The pros and cons of updating your iPhone with iOS 26

Yahoo10 hours ago

Apple unveiled its new iOS update at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this week – but it has already divided users.
The new iOS 26 will be available in developer beta this month, and showcases a new 'liquid glass' look for the operating system.
The update is known as iOS 26 thanks to next year being 2026, and Apple will also rebrand Mac OS and WatchOS in the same way.
Apple's Tim Cook described it as, "Expressive. Delightful. But still instantly familiar."

Users on social media were quick to criticise the new look, which Apple described in a release as being "crafted with liquid glass — a new translucent material that reflects and refracts its surroundings, bringing greater focus to content, and delivering a new level of vitality across controls, navigation, app icons, widgets, and more.
'The new design extends to the home screen and lock screen, making them more personal and expressive than ever.
Alan Dye, Apple's vice president of Human Interface Design, has described the update as 'the broadest software design update ever' from the company, saying: 'It combines the optical qualities of glass with a fluidity only Apple can achieve, as it transforms depending on your content or context.'
The new liquid glass interface streamlines and simplifies apps like safari, camera and photos, helping users to focus.
It adds transparent overlays and animation effects, including transparent app icons.
Apple Intelligence is also more tightly integrated into the OS with functions like live translation built into apps.
The new look is inspired by the visionOS software inside Apple's expensive vision pro headset.
The look is translucent, with the option for translucent icons and windows that Apple says, 'behave like glass in the real world.'
But despite the flashy new look, Apple claims it will not impact battery life.
Apple has significantly revamped the phone experience, with call screening, showing users details of the caller on screen, and the option to screen messages in messages.
A new layout in the phone app gathers favourites, recents and voicemails into one screen.
A new hold assist alerts on-hold users when a live agent is available.
The look represents a radical departure for the OS, and many users are not happy about it.
One user complained on X that the new liquid glass "looks abysmal and is a perfect example of focusing on form/prettiness/design over of functionality/readability/practicality".
Another wrote: "Steve Jobs would never have approved of this. Liquid glass seemed cool when I first saw it, but in reality it's just annoying to my eyes in most cases."

It remains possible that Apple will tone down the liquid glass effects before the software leaves beta testing, but as it stands it looks like an extremely radical reinvention.
Users have already expressed fears that the software may not run well on older devices, or devices with weak batteries.

Other users have voiced concerns over the widespread use of AI in the device.
Apple AI was widely criticised at launch, and will now be integrated into almost every part of the operating system, with users able to search and take action using AI inside any app.
AI is now baked into many functions of the operating system, with users able to ask ChatGPT questions about what they are looking at on screen.
Live translation will be built into messages, facetime and phone, and is able to translate in real-time between different languages.
Visual intelligence also recognises when users are looking at events, and offers a suggestion to instantly add it to the calendar.
Users can now also send Apple cash within chats.
Apple Intelligence is now baked into maps, so that, for instance, the app can warn of delays on a user's usual route home.
There are also updates to child accounts, making it easier for parents to limit screen time and block sensitive content.
The new software will be available to developers this month, and a public beta test will be available in July.
Different beta releases will continue on both developer and public beta tests through summer.
Apple usually releases new versions of iOS to the public in September, alongside the new crop of iPhones.
This new iOS is a radical reinvention, so there is a possibility of delay, but the third week of September seems the likeliest time for launch.

Update Every App On Your Phone That's On This List

Update these apps now. The recent warning that Meta and Yandex have been secretly tracking billions of phones is a stark reminder that your most sensitive data is at risk. That loophole will now close, as others will be found. Let's not forget Google itself was caught doing broadly the same. It's now four years since Apple's game-changing App Privacy Labels exposed the sheer extent of data harvesting targeting iPhone users, with the assumption that Android must be even worse. I covered that extensively at the time, and it was clear then — as it is now — that when you're not paying for a product, you are the product. Multiple reports since have highlighted that permission abuse is still rife, with apps requesting access to data and functions they do not need to deliver the features of the app itself. This is data monetization, pure and simple, your data monetization. Top-1o data hungry apps Now the researchers at Apteco have revisited Apple's privacy labels to find out 'who's collecting most of your data' in 2025. The study focused specifically on 'Data linked to you,' as this is the type of data that ties directly back to your identity.' Apteco's key findings are unsurprising: 'Social media apps are the most data hungry,' and the most collected personal data is 'contact information (such as your name, phone number and home address).' But the range of harvested data goes far beyond that, as you can see from Apteco's table reporting the data accessed during testing. Data collected from users. Apteco's list 'is dominated by social media… highlighting how important data collection is to these types of platforms in order to customize content to show things such as posts and friend suggestions [and] which build detailed social profiles.' Apteco's top-1o list is dominated by global brands with apps installed by hundreds of millions if not billions of users. This isn't a call to delete those apps — albeit you should be aware of the data they're collecting while running on your phone. App settings on iPhone Instead, you should update the permissions granted to apps on this list, deciding if you want to give them blanket access to location and other sensitive data. You should also be aware that when you operate within the confines of an app, for example using its own browser, you are not protected by the usual web tracking defenses on your phone. You don't need to grant all the permissions requested, and you can limit those permissions that might be needed — such as location — to only apply when using the app or to manually request each time before sharing. You can also restrict location data such that it's not precise and just gives a general idea of where you are. Here are instructions for iPhone and Android on how to apply updates. 'The study highlights how extensive data collection has become across a huge variety of apps,' Apteco says. 'The sheer scale of data collected highlights why understanding and managing app permissions and data policies is increasingly important for users [who] need to be aware of how to actively manage app permissions and data policies.'

Taiwan adds China's Huawei and SMIC to export control list

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwan's Commerce Ministry has added Chinese chipmakers Huawei Technologies and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) to its export control list, as trade and technology frictions between the self-ruled island, China and the United States increase. Inclusion on the 'strategic high-tech commodities' list means Taiwanese companies will need to obtain export permits before selling goods to the respective companies. Other entities on the list include organizations such as the Taliban and al-Qaeda, as well as other companies in China, Iran and elsewhere. The export control entities list was last updated on Sunday. Neither Huawei nor SMIC initially commented on their inclusion. Huawei and SMIC have both been sanctioned by the U.S. The two companies are producing China's most advanced homegrown artificial intelligence chips in an effort to compete with U.S.-based Nvidia and supply Chinese tech firms with the much-needed chips amid export curbs. Taiwan is home the world's largest chipmaker, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), a major supplier for Nvidia. Last November, the U.S. ordered TSMC to halt supplies of certain advanced chips to Chinese customers as part of broader efforts to restrict China's access to cutting-edge technologies. China claims self-ruled Taiwan as its own territory, to be annexed by force if necessary. The U.S. is Taiwan's biggest unofficial ally and arms seller.

2 Top Stocks to Profit Off the AI and Cryptocurrency Booms

Advanced Micro Devices is positioned for explosive growth in the AI chip market. Coinbase Global is preparing itself to be a leading financial services platform for the digital economy. 10 stocks we like better than Advanced Micro Devices › Artificial intelligence (AI) and cryptocurrency are two high-growth markets that offer promising return potential. Investing in the right stocks could pay off handsomely in the coming years. Here are two stocks that could deliver. AI is expected to increase the global economy by $15.7 trillion by 2030, according to PwC. This is a huge opportunity for one of the leading chipmakers, Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD). AMD stock pulled back sharply to start the year, but it has begun to recover. The business is set to supply a leading AI company with its new chips, which could benefit the stock. The last few years have seen a lot of chip investment go toward AI training, which is the process of feeding large data sets to AI models to make them smarter. Nvidia capitalized on the demand for AI training with its graphics processing units (GPUs). While AMD was late to the party, its first data center GPU, the MI300, was launched in late 2023 and raked in $5 billion of revenue last year. Management still sees a $500 billion opportunity as it launches new GPUs designed for AI inferencing, which takes a model to the next level by teaching it to make decisions on its own from new data. This is expected to be a huge market, and AMD has positioned its new chip lineup to take advantage of the opportunity. The company reported accelerating revenue growth last quarter, with data center revenue up 57% year over year. It gained business from one of the leading AI model developers that is using its Instinct GPUs for daily inferencing needs. AMD will launch its Instinct MI400 GPU in 2026, and OpenAI just announced plans to use the chip. This is a huge win and signals growing momentum for its data center business. Demand for AI inferencing hardware is expected to grow from $106 billion in 2025 to $255 billion by 2030, according to MarketsandMarkets. AMD is well positioned for this opportunity, making the recent dip a great buying opportunity. The cryptocurrency market was worth more than $3 trillion as of June 12, yet only 7% of the global population uses cryptocurrency, according to the crypto exchange Kraken. As interest in digital currencies continues to grow, Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: COIN) could grow along with it. Coinbase is a leading cryptocurrency exchange with more than $300 billion in assets on the platform. It saw a sharp increase in revenue last year as trading volumes soared, which has sent the stock up nearly 600% since 2022. But the shares have been volatile over the last few years, reflecting the downturn in the markets a few years ago. The risk for holding the stock is when markets decline, trading volumes drop, which depresses revenue. However, Coinbase has a lot of opportunity to attract more assets to its platform. It is expanding the number of trading products and services to appeal to institutional investors, which make up the majority of its trading volume. Its push into crypto options and stablecoins, as well as improvements to its trading infrastructure are positioning it to attract more customers. As demand for digital assets continues to grow, the exchange should see increasing trading volumes and revenue. And there are strong signals pointing to rising demand for cryptocurrencies over the long term. A recent report from Coinbase showed that 60% of Fortune 500 executives are working on blockchain initiatives, which serve as the digital ledger for crypto transactions. Another strong signal supporting the long-term future of the market was President Donald Trump's recent executive order to establish a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve for the U.S. government. These are bullish indicators for crypto and Coinbase. There are a lot of places to buy and sell cryptocurrency, but Coinbase is on a mission to become not just a leading crypto exchange but also a leading financial services platform. This makes the stock a great way to benefit from this booming market.
