BCCI appoints Shubman Gill as India's new Test captain for England series
Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new Test captain on Saturday of the Indian cricket team, succeeding Rohit Sharma, who announced his retirement from Test cricket in May 2025. Gill will lead 18-man squad for India's tour of England, starting June 20. The 25-year-old opener, known for his calm demeanor and impressive batting skills, has been a consistent performer in the longest format, amassing over 1,800 runs in 32 Tests. His leadership credentials have been bolstered by his role as captain of the Gujarat Titans in the IPL, where he demonstrated tactical acumen and composure under pressure. Gill's appointment marks the beginning of a new era for Indian Test cricket. Gill's first Test assignment as red ball captain will be a challenging one, going up against England on British soil. The 5-match Test series will begin from June 20 onwards in what will be the first series without India's two Test legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Big moment for Indian cricket
The announcement by chief selector Ajit Agarkar marks a defining moment in Indian cricket, as Shubman Gill is named the new Test captain—becoming the youngest to take on the role since Virat Kohli in 2014. Already viewed as a natural successor, Gill steps into the leadership role with prior captaincy experience in T20Is and the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he currently leads the Gujarat Titans. Under his captaincy, GT have impressed this season, holding a top spot on the points table with just a few league matches left.
Since making his Test debut in the 2020 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, Gill has played 32 matches, amassing 1,893 runs at an average of 35.05, including five centuries. Alongside young talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant, Gill is seen as a key figure in shaping India's red-ball future.
India's upcoming tour of England also marks the beginning of their campaign in the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship cycle. The five-match series, to be played at iconic venues including Headingley, Edgbaston, Lord's, Old Trafford, and The Oval, symbolizes the start of a new chapter. With the captaincy baton now in Gill's hands, India embarks on this new era full of hope, high expectations, and the excitement of what lies ahead.
Before the five-Test series against England begins, India will play a warm-up match against India 'A' in Beckenham.
The team last toured England during the 2021–22 season, when the two sides competed in a five-match Test series that concluded in a 2-2 draw.
India squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (WK & VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Eswaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.

South Africa will bring fight to Australia in WTC 2025 final: Nathan Lyon
As Australia prepare to defend their ICC World Test Championship title, seasoned spinner Nathan Lyon has acknowledged that facing South Africa at Lord's on 11 June will be a far greater test than many might expect. While the Aussies are riding high after a string of ICC triumphs—including the 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cups, 2021 T20 World Cup, and the 2023 WTC final win—Lyon said experience alone won't be enough. The veteran off-spinner noted that the challenge will be compounded by unfamiliar conditions in England and the use of the Dukes ball, which offers more swing and seam than the Kookaburra typically used in Australia. Despite Australia's winning pedigree, Lyon made it clear that the Proteas bring their own strengths to the table. Past experience counts, but only to an extent Lyon said the presence of players who've won multiple global titles gives Australia a mental edge, especially in high-pressure scenarios, but warned that past achievements won't count once the first ball is bowled. 'Yes, we have that experience, but that doesn't guarantee anything. You've still got to perform on the day,' he said. Conditions and Dukes ball will level the playing field The switch to Dukes balls and English conditions presents a new test, especially for Australia's batters. 'It's going to be two world-class bowling attacks going at each other, and the Dukes ball makes it even more interesting,' Lyon said, highlighting that adapting to conditions quickly will be key. South Africa's batting arsenal gets Lyon's attention Lyon has kept a close eye on South Africa's recent performances. Calling Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton 'class players', he also singled out David Bedingham, whom he faced in county cricket, as a special talent. He believes the Proteas line-up won't shy away from the big stage. Injury-free and ready to go Lyon also confirmed he's back to full fitness following a hip injury sustained during the home series against India. 'I've been bowling for over five weeks now, and everything feels exactly where it should be,' he said. With that, Australia's spin spearhead is ready for another crack at the WTC title.

No Fans Turn Up To Welcome Shubman Gill-Led Team India In England: Report
Shubman Gill-led Indian team arrived in London on Saturday ahead of the all-important five-match Test series against England starting on June 20. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) posted a video of team arriving in London on its social media accounts. "Touchdown UK. Team India have arrived for the five-match Test series against England," the BCCI captioned the post. Jasprit Bumrah, Gill, Arshdeep Singh, Rishabh Pant and Prasidh Krishna were in all smiles during the travel. The squad looked charged-up and upbeat for the long tour on English conditions. According to a video on journalist Vimal Kumar 's YouTube channel, there were no fans or media personnel to welcome the team near the airport. Before departing the country, newly-appointed Test captain Gill reflected on the challenges of playing without stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli following their retirements from the format last month. "I think there is pressure every time you play and match or start a tour. As such, there is pressure ahead of every series, but there would not be any extra pressure. Rohit and Virat are very experienced players, and it is very difficult to fill the space, but as a team, we have a lot of experience, and we have played a lot of matches," said Gill at the pre-departure press conference in Mumbai on Thursday. "The players and the team are all used to the pressure. We are not that inexperienced players. The batting and bowling combination in our team is very good," said the India Test captain. Gill also talked about his first reaction when he got the news that he would be India's new Test captain and said they have not decided what position he will bat in. He has opened in the previous tours and has also batted at No.3. But with Rohit not there, the team management has to also take a call on who will partner Gill if he decides to open, Yashasvi Jaiswal or Abhimanyu Easwaran, the Bengal opener who is yet to debut. "Firstly, when I came to know that I would get an opportunity like this, at the beginning, it was very overwhelming. It was quite overwhelming with the whole experience. But having said that, I think it is a big responsibility. And looking forward, there is a great chance that we will be presented first. And we haven't really decided on the (batting) position yet. We still have some time. We have a spot match in London. So, we still have time to decide on the batting order," said Gill. India are aiming to win a Test series in England for the first time since 2007. The Test series in England will also be India's first assignment in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle.
