Rockets 100, Bucks 97: In gritty win, Houston draws postgame praise for defense, culture
HOUSTON -- With a spectacular defensive effort in the fourth quarter, the Rockets added another quality win to their ledger with Tuesday's 100-97 victory (box score) at Toyota Center over the visiting Milwaukee Bucks.
Houston (36-22, No. 5 in Western Conference standings) is now 19-9 at home this season. The Rockets are 4-2 since a six-game losing streak earlier this month. With the loss, Milwaukee (32-25) fell to No. 5 in the East.
The Rockets held the Bucks to just 38 points in the second half and 12 in the fourth quarter. Though Houston has struggled at times defensively in recent weeks (amid widespread roster injuries), the Rockets remain a top-four defense overall for the NBA's 2024-25 season. And now, with the team getting healthier amid the recent return of Jabari Smith Jr., they're showing why a healthy version of the Rockets remains a force on the defensive end of the court.
Individual statistics and highlights are available in our game recap. Giannis Antetokounmpo led Milwaukee with a game-high 27 points, while Jalen Green (25 points, 8 rebounds) and Alperen Sengun (23 points, 11 rebounds) were the statistical standouts for Houston.
Here's a look at what was said postgame in both locker rooms. Houston returns to action Wednesday night at home versus San Antonio (24-31), with tipoff scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Central.
Doc Rivers with effusive praise for Ime Udoka & Houston's young core: 'They play to [Ime's] attitude. Physical, tough. … First time in a while you can say they have a solid culture in Houston.'Added Jalen Green is 'playing terrific. He's really starting to shoot the ball.' pic.twitter.com/GlBsgBf8MX

Doc Rivers: "Offensively, we didn't play as well as we can. We're a better team than that offensively. This is one of those games that'll keep you up at night. It really was."

Giannis Antetokounmpo spent some time getting to know Alperen Sengun during All-Star Weekend. I asked him about Alpi and he shared a great story from their time together in the Bay Area.Apparently, his son is a big fan of Sengun: pic.twitter.com/pMFSDv6ltK

Asked Ime Udoka about Alperen Sengun's late game turnover. It wasn't just Udoka who coached him up, but his teammates as well. He did make sure to note Sengun made up for it in other ways:'Guys had a laugh about it, but some guys also let him know it's not funny.' pic.twitter.com/OssDOsNrpN

How to watch Phoenix Mercury vs New York Liberty: Live stream info, preview for Thursday's game
The New York Liberty host the Phoenix Mercury this Thursday, June 19, at 7:00 PM ET at Barclays Center, marking the first meeting between the two teams this season. After picking up their first loss of the season against the Indiana Fever last Saturday, the Liberty bounced back, defeating the Atlanta Dream 86-81 on Tuesday night. Atlanta led 62-47 halfway through the third quarter, but the reigning WNBA champions rallied back. Sabrina Ionescu scored a team-high 34 points in the win, along with 5 assists and 7 rebounds. It was Ionescu's first time scoring 30 points in consecutive games — she also had 34 in the loss against the Fever on June 14. For the first time in her @WNBA career, Sabrina Ionescu has recorded back-to-back 30-point games. This also marks the first pair of consecutive 30-point outings this season across the WNBA. Sabrina joins Breanna Stewart as the only players in Liberty franchise history to do so. 'I was really proud of the way that we fought. That game could have easily gone the other direction,' said Ionescu. 'You were able to see a team that stayed together, dug deep, and just figured it out on the fly. I'm really impressed by our ability to do that. ' Breanna Stewart finished with 23 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Jonquel Jones added 10 points and had 10 rebounds in the win. The Phoenix Mercury are coming off a 76-70 road win against the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday. Satou Sabally led the way for the Mercury with 22 points and 9 rebounds, while Alyssa Thomas scored 14 points and a team-high 13 assists. This stat belongs to one player and one player only: Alyssa Thomas. Kahleah Copper, making her return after a preseason injury, finished with 11 points. The Mercury guard, who led the team in scoring last season, underwent a left knee arthroscopy in early May. Her last game was against the Aces on May 6 during preseason. Locked on Rockets: How aggressive should Houston be in its trade pursuit of Kevin Durant?
Locked on Rockets: How aggressive should Houston be in its trade pursuit of Kevin Durant? Wednesday's Locked on Rockets show explores many of Houston's considerations in a potential Kevin Durant trade with Phoenix. That includes the long-term fits of both Jabari Smith Jr. and Jalen Green. The specifics of Houston's trade offer for Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant have yet to be identified in a report. However, financial analysis from Rockets Wire points to a package headlined by Jalen Green or a combination of Dillon Brooks and either Jabari Smith Jr. or Reed Sheppard as the most likely starting point. Draft equity and further matching salaries would likely be a component, as well. Phoenix is reportedly underwhelmed by the current offer, though negotiations are ongoing. The Rockets are believed to be on Durant's list of desired destinations, along with the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat. Furthermore, suitors not on that list (such as Minnesota) are reportedly not willing to bid aggressively without a change in the All-Star forward's stance. Since Durant's current contract expires after next season, his choice to sign (or not sign) an extension carries significant weight in these talks, since many teams won't risk surrendering significant asset capital if they might lose him as an unrestricted free agent a year later. So, if that makes a Durant-to-Houston deal increasingly realistic: Would the Rockets be better off with a deal headlined by Green, or one featuring Brooks and Smith or Sheppard? Or, could perhaps both Green and Smith be included if Houston keeps pick No. 10 in the 2025 first round? In theory, that selection could then be used to select a Smith replacement. Should a Rockets-Suns deal happen, either Green or Brooks would likely be replaced by Durant in Houston's starting lineup for the 2025-26 season. Featuring credentialed media members Jackson Gatlin and Ben DuBose as hosts, Wednesday's Locked on Rockets podcast episode explores the current state of Durant talks and what makes the most sense for the franchise as negotiations enter the closing stages. Tune in below! Another discussion topic is Smith's looming contract extension, and what role (if any) that could have in determining if he's included in a Durant deal. By contrast, the value of Green's second NBA contract is already known, since he was drafted a year earlier. Green and Smith were drafted by Houston at No. 2 and No. 3 in the 2021 and 2022 first rounds, respectively. Green was the leading scorer on the 2024-25 Rockets, who finished at 52-30 and with the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference. Smith operated as a versatile forward providing both perimeter shooting and defensive value, though he finished the year as a sixth man after being bumped to the bench in favor of Amen Thompson. Then again, despite his regular-season success and growth as a player, Green had a very underwhelming playoff run during a seven-game, first-round series loss to the Golden State Warriors. With the long-term hierarchy still somewhat in question, Wednesday's episode breaks down many of the considerations for general manager Rafael Stone and head coach Ime Udoka. Those considerations also include the massive age gap between Smith (22), Green (23), and Durant (36), and how much that discrepancy should be weighed during Houston's ongoing talks with Phoenix. Stay tuned! More: Jalen Green reportedly determined to improve upon playoff struggles, stay in Houston
