Original Beatles drummer Pete Best announces retirement due to ‘personal circumstances'

Yahoo09-04-2025

Pete Best, the original drummer for The Beatles, has announced his retirement.
The 83-year-old drummed for the groundbreaking band from 1960 to 1962, which included some of their formative years playing in Liverpool and Hamburg, Germany.
He had come to the attention of Beatles bassist Paul McCartney after performing at Best's mother's cafe and venue in Liverpool, The Casbah Coffee Club. In later years, Best continued to operate the Casbah and recently converted the space into a Beatles-themed Airbnb. It features a room dedicated to every member except his eventual replacement, Ringo Starr.
Best also performed and toured with his own groups, The Pete Best Combo and The Pete Best Band.
Posting on the Casbah's X/Twitter account, Best's brother Roag wrote: 'Well what an absolutely wonderful ride we've had. However, everything comes to pass.
'My brother Pete Best has announced today he is retiring from personal appearances and performing with the group. His daughter has informed me it's due to personal circumstances.'
Best was born in Madras, India, on November 24, 1941. His family moved to Liverpool while he was still an infant, where his mother, Mona, later opened The Casbah Coffee Club in the cellar of their family home.
The Quarrymen, a pre-Beatles band featuring McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ken Brown, went to the Casbah when they wanted to book their first gig. Mona Best agreed, but said she first needed help painting the club. The musicians picked up paint brushes and become the venue's decorators.
In 2006, UK Culture Minister David Lammy announced that the club was to be given Grade II listed building status and a blue plaque commemorating its place in musical history. In 2024, it was converted into an Airbnb.
Best played his last two gigs with The Beatles on August 15, 1962, at Liverpool's Cavern Club. The following day, he was informed he was being let go by Beatles manager Brian Epstein.
After being replaced in the band by Starr, Best was offered the job of drummer in fellow group the Mersey Beats but turned it down. He later moved to the United States and formed the Pete Best Combo, and then the Pete Best Band.
The early days of The Beatles in Hamburg have long been the subject of deep fascination. Last year, a contract for one of their early residencies in the city was auctioned for £30,000 ($38,000).

Handwritten ‘Don't Stop Believin' lyrics up for auction as part of Steve Perry's new charity effort

The former Journey frontman is auctioning off more than 50 items from his personal collection, including handwritten 'Don't Stop Believin' lyrics, vintage tour merchandise, signed guitars, test pressings, and gold and platinum records. 'Every item in this collection comes directly from my personal archive,' Perry said in a statement. 'These pieces have been carefully stored for many years, and now I feel it's the right time to pass them on from my hands to yours, to be enjoyed, remembered and treasured in your own personal collections.' Fans can bid on the rare items online now through noon on June 13. The auction is a partnership with Darkives Collectables, a new archival memorabilia site helmed by Dhani Harrision, the son of the Beatles' guitarist George Harrison, and Dark Horse Records. All proceeds are expected to benefit Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, a nonprofit providing financial assistance to musicians and other music industry workers. The organization will help distribute funds to victims of the devastating fires that swept Los Angeles in January. 'We're excited to have Steve Perry as our inaugural partner on the brand-new Darkives Collectables auction site,' Harrison said in a statement. 'His continued generosity makes him the perfect artist to help launch this platform, and we're honored to support the causes that matter most to him.' In another return to his former San Francisco rock band, Perry recently rerecorded its 1983 ballad 'Faithfully' for the first time in three decades with country music star Willy Nelson. The collaboration, released in May, celebrates the 40th anniversary of Farm Aid, Nelson's nonprofit that raises funds to support family farmers. Perry first joined Journey as lead singer in 1977, helping the group sell nearly 100 million albums worldwide, but he took a brief hiatus in 1987 before reuniting with the band from 1995 to 1998. Since then, his public appearances have been few and far between.

Stanley Cup Final MVP Odds: Connor McDavid To Win Conn Smythe Trophy?

Edmonton star Connor McDavid is the odds-on favorite to win the Conn Smythe Trophy for the second time in as many years. Edmonton star Connor McDavid is the odds-on favorite to win the Conn Smythe Trophy for the second time in as many years. Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. It will come as no surprise to hockey fans that Edmonton star Connor McDavid is favored to win the 2025 Conn Smythe Trophy, which is given annually to the MVP of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. After all, McDavid won the award a year ago despite Florida beating Edmonton for the Stanley Cup trophy in seven games. He became the sixth player in NHL history to win the Conn Smythe Trophy while playing for a team that did not capture the Stanley Cup. After a seven-game marathon between the Panthers and Oilers a year ago, Edmonton -- which has home ice after having to play last year's series-deciding Game 7 on the road -- is the slight betting favorite this year. Conn Smythe Trophy Odds: McDavid Favored DK FD bet365 Connor McDavid +110 -105 +100 Sergei Bobrovsky +250 +280 +260 Aleksander Barkov +550 +600 +550 Leon Draisaitl +750 +800 +750 Matthew Tkachuk +2500 +2600 +2500 Sam Bennett +3000 +2600 +2800 Stuart Skinner +5000 +4900 +3300 Conn Smythe Trophy Betting Analysis, Picks The case for McDavid is self-explanatory. Unless you don't give Edmonton a real chance to win this series, he's a solid bet right now, especially at +110 at DraftKings. Best* Conn Smythe Bet: Connor McDavid (+110 at DraftKings) *We should probably call McDavid the "safest" Conn Smythe bet instead of the "best" one given how obvious it is, but either way, that's our first recommendation here. As we saw in this matchup last year, anything can happen when the Panthers and Oilers get together, but the opportunity to take McDavid at plus-money is hard to pass up -- have we mentioned that he won the award last year despite his team losing the series? There are several other intriguing options, though. The fact that McDavid is just one of four players whose pre-Stanley Cup Final Conn Smythe odds are 8-to-1 or shorter across the board shows that he's no lock. If Florida wins the Stanley Cup, the odds indicate that either goalie Sergei Bobrovsky or Aleksander Barkov -- who just earned his second straight Selke Trophy (best defensive forward) -- will probably win the Conn Smythe Trophy. But between McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and its underrated supporting cast, Edmonton just has too much firepower for me to recommend Bobrovsky, especially at shorter than 3-to-1 odds. On the Florida side, Sam Bennett -- who enters the Stanley Cup Final as the NHL playoff leader with 10 goals -- tands out to me as the best value bet to win this award at +3000 at DraftKings. The Panthers' balance makes it hard to predict who will score the goals for them. Still, it's hard to deny that Bennett -- who has scored almost as any playoff goals as his team's second and third-leading scorers combined (Barkov and Carter Verhaeghe have both scored six goals) -- offers incredible upside at 30-to-1 (DK) to win the Conn Smythe. Best Conn Smythe Longshot Bet: Stuart Skinner (+5000 at DK) If there's a non-McDavid Oiler worth backing to win the Conn Smythe Trophy, it might be 26-year-old goalie Stuart Skinner. There's some value here based on line-shopping, if nothing else, as bet365 lists Skinner at just +3300 as of June 4. He's had an up-and-down playoffs. He was benched after two rough outings vs. the Kings to start the playoffs. But after his backup, Calvin Pickard, got injured in the second round, Skinner was solid in his return to action against both Vegas in the conference semis and Dallas in the conference finals, with three shutouts in his last seven games. Skinner also boasts an impressive save percentage (.944) and goals-against average (1.41) in his last seven appearances. If he can stay hot in a low-scoring series win over a Florida team that has reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals, he could absolutely steal some Conn Smythe votes, if not the trophy itself, from McDavid. Walt Disney World Teases Details About New 'Cars'-Themed Land amid 'Largest Expansion' in History of Magic Kingdom

Walt Disney World has released details about the upcoming Cars-themed land, set to launch as part of the Piston Peak National Park transformation The Cars attraction was first announced at the Disney Experiences showcase at D23 on Aug. 10 "Cars from around the country are fueling up to be the wildest racer in the 'wheelderness,'" a Disney Parks Blog post read Walt Disney World is gearing up for the "largest expansion" in the history of Magic Kingdom! On Tuesday, June 3, the Orlando, Florida park released new details regarding the Piston Peak National Park transformation and the upcoming Pixar Cars-themed land, per a Disney Parks Blog post. "Cars from around the country are fueling up to be the wildest racer in the 'wheelderness,'" the post began. "Of course, we know that fans are curious to see how the exciting new backdrop for the big rally race will fit into the waters, landscapes, and storytelling at Magic Kingdom." It was announced that two new Cars-themed attractions would soon be built in Frontierland at the Disney Experiences showcase at D23 on Aug. 10. In the latest post, the park announced that Piston Peak National Park "will continue the sweeping storytelling tradition that has crossed Liberty Square and Frontierland" since it opened in the '70s. The post read, "Since the early days of Magic Kingdom, adventurous guests have traveled across space and time as they pass from Liberty Square to Frontierland." "At the heart of all these stories are heroic characters with a belief in themselves that helped forge a path to their dreams," the statement continued. "To continue this journey in great American storytelling, Piston Peak National Park will be part of the largest expansion in the history of Magic Kingdom," the park said. The post continued, "Imagine an awe-inspiring wilderness filled with towering trees, snowcapped mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, roaring rivers and impressive geysers. While fictional, Piston Peak is inspired by the Rocky Mountain area and the history and iconic sights of the American Frontier and its national parks." The park revealed that Piston Peak visitors would "be able to see and explore the visitor lodge, Ranger HQ, trails and more all set within the Disney and Pixar Cars universe." "To make sure these buildings fit naturally within the surrounding majestic landscapes, Imagineers are using a style of architecture called 'Parkitecture,' which was developed by the National Park Service to create structures that harmonize with the natural environment," the post added. "From the outside, trees will provide a natural barrier between the off-road rally and other parts of Frontierland and Liberty Square. Rugged mountains with dramatic peaks will be nestled along a calming waterway across from Grizzly Hall, and soaring geysers from the famed Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will stretch into the trails of our off-road rally," the description read. The post also confirmed that amid the ongoing work on the park this summer, the attractions Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat would be closing from July 7. "Imagineers are also hard at work beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, bringing to life the first-ever land inspired by the Disney Villains with two major attractions, dining, and shopping all on an incredibly twisted grand scale," the park added. Details of the off-road Cars vehicles heading to the park were first revealed at The Future of World-Building at Disney panel at SXSW in March, per a previous Disney Parks Blog post. Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter and Imagineer Michael Hundgen shared the news, with the latter saying, 'Our primary goal is creating an emotional experience for our guests." 'For this Cars attraction, we need to invent a new type of ride vehicle. No one builds these in a factory because it has to do so much more than just carrying you from one place to another. We have to create a car that conveys a feeling when you ride in it," he added, per the post. The Imagineers worked with a motocross company after taking a trip to Arizona to experience driving in a real off-road vehicle on rocky terrain, the park said. 'We're using a customized production vehicle,' Hundgen explained. 'It has sensors all over it, and we're taking it for test drives on our dirt track to gather data on how the vehicle responds to different terrain. This is where we turn that feeling we want into real-world engineering." A Disney spokesperson didn't immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE for additional information.
