China Reiterates Opposition to Any Trade Deals at Its Expense

Bloomberg12 hours ago

China firmly opposes any countries reaching trade agreements with the US that would sacrifice Chinese interests in exchange for tariff relief, according to a statement from the Ministry of Commerce on Saturday night.
'If such a situation occurs, China will not accept it and will take resolute countermeasures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests,' an unidentified spokesperson was cited saying in response to a media query about recent US trade talks with other nations. 'It has been proven that only by firmly upholding its principles and positions can a country truly protect its legitimate rights.'

Strike shuts down Bangladesh's biggest port

Operations at Bangladesh's biggest port were suspended on Sunday as a strike by customs officials brought shipping activity to a halt. The shutdown at Chittagong Port is part of an ongoing dispute between tax authority employees and the government, which is trying to overhaul the body. "The port typically handles around 7,000 to 8,000 containers daily... But since this morning, there has been no movement in offloading or onboarding of goods," said Mohammed Omar Faruq, secretary of the Chittagong Port Authority. "This is having a huge impact on the country's economic situation," he told AFP. Bangladesh is the world's second-largest garment manufacturer, while textile and garment production accounts for about 80 percent of the country's exports. Mahmud Hasan Khan, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, said the halt in port operations would cost the industry $222 million. "The cost of recovery will be staggering -- beyond comprehension -- and many factories risk going bankrupt," he told AFP. Staff at the National Board of Revenue (NBR) have been striking on and off for weeks over plans to split the authority into two separate bodies. Bangladesh's interim leader, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, urged them to end the walkout. "We hope NBR's staff will report back to work setting aside their unlawful programme that goes against the national interest of the country," his office said in a statement. "Otherwise for the sake of the people of this country and safeguarding the economy the government will be left with no option but to act firmly," the statement added. NBR staff were prevented from entering their offices on Sunday after a government order sought to stop them from protesting within their building premises. Meanwhile, 13 business chambers held a press conference on Saturday urging the government to resolve the issue as soon as possible. sa/asv/rsc

Trump says US has reached trade deal with China

The US and China have signed a deal to end their trade war, according to US President Donald Trump. The world's two biggest economies had battered each other with a series of economic measures in recent months, notably harsh US tariffs on imports and Chinese export controls on rare earths. Trump and his Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick both said that an agreement was signed this week, although neither provided details. The trade war has hurt both countries: The US economy shrank at an annualized 0.5% rate in the first quarter, while Chinese manufacturers, notably automakers, have seen profits slump, The Hill reported. Lutnick said a further 10 deals with other major trading partners would follow: 'We're going to have deal after deal.'

Swiss Watch Exports Tumble Following Surge As Tariffs Loom

Cartier Tank Louis Cartier. Swiss watch exports are on something of a roller coaster ride so far this year, surging in April, particularly in the U.S., as retailers and brand boutiques stocked up ahead of speculation about tariffs in an endeavor to avoidinevitable price hikes. Exports then dropped dramatically in May. According to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH), exports of watches to the U.S. surged by 149% in April, the most ever, after U.S. President Donald Trump floated the idea of imposing a 31% levy on imports from Switzerland. In May, however, exports to all the main markets for Swiss watches experienced a sharp decline. In the U.S., they tanked by -25.3%. China was down -17.4%; Japan by -10.5%; Hong Kong by -12.6%; and the UK by 14%. 'The sharp rise in exports in April were a reflection of a one-off response to an uncertain commercial situation than a genuine sign of a structural strengthening of demand,' the FH said. Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar 150th Anniversary. "The worldwide May exports of 2.1 billion Swiss francs (-9.5%), were notably impacted by the downturn in the U.S. market, following the peak in April, and the United States accounted for over 40% of the global decline. Although more moderate than expected, this boomerang effect followed the increase of 150% seen in April,' says the FH. 'Japan (-10.5%) and the United Kingdom (-14.5%) joined the list of markets in sharp decline, which is already dominated by China (-17.4%) and Hong Kong (-12.6%). The United Arab Emirates was the only one of the top 12 markets to achieve positive performance in May, but has still been on a downward trend since the start of the year.' Panerai Luminor Marina PAM 03313. On a positive note, the overall trend in Swiss watch exports since the start of 2025 has edged slightly above last year, with growth of +1.1% by the end of May, bringing the cumulative total to 10.8 billion Swiss francs. The real test comes in the fall, when exports tick up again ahead of holiday sales. The Swiss watch industry tends to shut down for July and August, but comes alive again with Geneva Watch Days, a trade and collector show held over Labor Day weekend at various venues in Geneva. And 2026 dates have already been set for the main luxury watch fair on the calendar, Watches and Wonders, scheduled for April 14-20.
