Stephen A. Smith Slams Lebron James For 'Hiding Behind His Son' Months After Their Explosive Feud

It's a known fact that Stephen A. Smith and LeBron James aren't the biggest fans of each other, and based on a new interview the ESPN commentator did with Rolling Stone, it's starting to make sense why.

According to Smith, who joined the ESPN family in 2003, he's always covered LeBron's career objectively and fairly.

However, some of his reporting on LeBron's behind-the-scenes dealings in the NBA reportedly angered the four-time champion.
"I don't like him, and he don't like me," Smith stated. "He's one of the greatest players who's ever lived."
He added, "I'm going to show him that respect, and I'm going to cover him objectively. When he does great, I'm gonna applaud. When he doesn't do great, I'm not gonna applaud."

Tensions between Smith and LeBron James reached an all-time high at the beginning of 2025, after the pair were seen butting heads courtside over pointed comments Smith had made about LeBron's son, Bronny James, on an episode of "First Take."

'I am pleading with LeBron James as a father: stop this. Stop this,' Smith said on camera before questioning whether Bronny is a skilled enough player to be in the NBA.
He continued, 'We all know that Bronny James is in the NBA because of his dad."
Smith then highlighted Bronny's early-season performance in the league, which, at the time, many deemed unimpressive.
'You know what people are saying. You know what they're going to do to this kid,' Smith said. 'In 13 games, he has played 44 minutes. He has scored four points, he is shooting 1-of-16 from the field, 0-for-7 from 3-point range. How are you doing him favors? We know that he's not ready yet. And I'm saying this with compassion."

He added, "You know what it's going to do to your son, to people that are missing out on opportunities, that are busting their tail on other NBA teams and the G League and Europe and everywhere else, what kind of opportunity they are starving for? You're exposing your son like this.'
Smith Assures People He Was Not Speaking Negatively About LeBron James' Son

In his most recent interview, Smith criticized LeBron for allegedly using his son to escalate their feud.
"He hid behind his son, tried to make something out of nothing, as if I was dogging his son, which I was not," Smith said.

"The real issue was we don't like each other. And he used that as an excuse to confront me. I got it," he added before saying he wasn't going to change his position on the matter in the future.
"We're never gonna like each other," Smith stated. "It's not gonna stop me from doing my job. He'll be treated just like any other player I cover. Nobody is going to get me to compromise my professional integrity. I don't have to like you to be fair to you."
LeBron Addressed His Beef With Smith During An Earlier Interview

Previously, on "The Pat McAfee Show," LeBron commented on his long-standing feud with Smith, slamming him for going on a "Taylor Swift tour run" to discuss their issues.

"It started off with, 'I didn't want to address it. I wasn't going to address it, but since the video came out, I feel the need to address it,'" James said.
He continued: "Are you kidding me? If there was one person [who] couldn't wait for the video to drop, it was your -ss. Like seriously?"
Bronny's Coach Had Positive Things To Say About Him

Bronny, meanwhile, appears unfazed by the noise surrounding him and his father in the NBA; in fact, he says, it only motivates him to work harder.
"My first thought about everything is I always try to just let it go through one ear and out the other, put my head down, and come to work and be positive every day," he said.

And that attitude appears to be impacting his team, as head coach JJ Redick praised the rookie guard during a previous conversation with ESPN.
"I've just been impressed with the person that he is," Redick said. "And to deal with ... frankly, bullsh-t because of who his dad is and just keep a level head about it and be a class act says a lot about him, says a lot about that family."

Olson and Strider help Braves sweep Mets and extend their losing streak to 6 games

ATLANTA (AP) — Matt Olson hit a three-run double, Spencer Strider struck out eight in six innings and the Atlanta Braves beat the Mets 7-1 on Thursday night to complete a series sweep that extended New York's season-worst losing streak to six games. New York's latest sloppy defeat, paired with Philadelphia's 2-1 win over Miami, left the Mets and Phillies tied for first place in the NL East heading into their upcoming weekend series. Mets pitchers issued nine walks, including a career-high six in 4 2/3 innings by starter Clay Holmes (7-4), who allowed three runs. Huascar Brazobán walked three while giving up four runs in relief. Strider (2-5) yielded one run and five hits with one walk. Olson added another double and two walks, and scored three runs. The Braves have won three straight and seven of nine. They trail the Mets and Phillies by 10 games one week after they were 15 games out of first place. Key moment With the bases loaded and Holmes facing a 3-2 count to Drake Baldwin in the fifth, the right-hander had an issue with the PitchCom device in his cap. After a new device was delivered from the dugout, Holmes threw ball four to force in a run that gave Atlanta a 2-1 lead. Brazobán followed with another bases-loaded walk, to Ozzie Albies. Key stat Juan Soto's single with two outs in the first for the Mets was his 1,000th career hit at age 26. Up next The Mets had not announced a scheduled starting pitcher for Friday night's opener of a three-game series at Philadelphia. Right-hander Justin Hagenman, who was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse, was expected to be the answer or serve as a bulk reliever behind an opener, but he was needed as the Mets' second reliever against Atlanta. The Braves are expected to call up 20-year-old rookie Didier Fuentes for his major league debut to start at Miami and provide extra rest for the regular members of the rotation. ___ AP MLB:

The Buss family is selling a majority ownership stake of the Lakers

On Wednesday, during the latter stages of the NBA Finals, some huge news involving the Los Angeles Lakers has broken. According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Buss family has agreed to sell a majority share of the Los Angeles Lakers to Mark Walter, who is CEO and chairman of diversified holding company TWG Global. However, Jeanie Buss, who has been the governor of the Lakers, will remain in her role. Advertisement Via ESPN: "The Buss family is entering into an agreement to sell majority ownership of the Los Angeles Lakers to Mark Walter for a franchise valuation of approximately $10 billion, sources told ESPN, the most ever for a U.S. professional sports team," Charania wrote. "The Buss family will keep a minority share of the team, just over 15%, for a period of time, a source said. "In addition, Jeanie Buss will remain the Lakers' governor and continue to run the team for 'at least a number of years,' sources with knowledge of the deal told ESPN's Ramona Shelburne. It was guaranteed as part of the agreement that Jeanie Buss would remain in charge for the foreseeable future, and Walter fully endorsed this plan, according to sources." The Buss family purchased the Lakers in 1979 from previous owner Jack Kent Cooke. At that time, Buss' father, the late Dr. Jerry Buss, became the owner of the team, and it went on to win the NBA championship the very next season. Four more world titles followed in the next eight seasons, transforming the Purple and Gold from the bridesmaid franchise it had been in the 1960s and 1970s into the gold standard of basketball. It won another five championships in an 11-season span starting in the 1999-2000 campaign with Kobe Bryant as its driving force, as well as an additional one in 2020 with LeBron James and Anthony Davis leading the way. Walter's TWG Global owns interests in several other sports franchises, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have won the National League West in 11 of the last 12 years and the World Series in two of the last five Major League Baseball seasons. He has owned a stake in the Purple and Gold since 2021. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: The Buss family is selling a majority ownership stake of the Lakers
