Sunil Gavaskar ‘wanted to do the backstand' after Rishabh Pant's century: ‘If I could do it successfully…'
Rishabh Pant continues to be the favourite of all. Hence, it is no surprise that even former India captain Sunil Gavaskar was waiting to see the southpaw bring out his trademark somersault celebration following his century in the second innings of the first Test against England on Day 4. Pant is now just the second player in the history of the game to score twin centuries in a Test as a wicketkeeper-batter. As soon as Pant completed his century in the second innings, the entire crowd was waiting to see if the 27-year-old would bring out the somersault, just like he did in the first innings, after bringing up the three-figure mark.
Rather, Rishabh Pant signalled towards Gavaskar, probably saying 'some time later' when the latter requested a somersault celebration.
Speaking about Rishabh Pant on the Sony Sports Network after Stumps on Day 4, Gavaskar said, 'Very, very happy. I mean, anytime an Indian does well, you feel very happy because you know the passion for cricket in India, how just about every, in every family, I'm sure there is at least one person who, it might not be everybody, at least one person who follows the game.'
'And therefore to make that family happy, if you can do well, if India does well, then naturally it is, it's a great feeling. And so to see this young kid, come back, I mean, look what had happened to him with all those, with that crash,' he added.
It must be mentioned that Rishabh Pant brought out a completely new celebration after scoring a century in the second innings as he made a gesture signalling towards his eye.
'Can you explain what that celebration is? Do you know what that is? I was waiting for that flip as well. I was rather disappointed on commentary when he didn't produce a double flip. Knowing Rishabh, he's always going to try to improve his celebrations, but I guess your celebration is probably taking this bit,' said former England captain Michael Vaughan.
Replying to Vaughan, Gavaskar said, 'No, this is, I think that's basically, thanking the gods above. He had something on his eye. He kind of put us on the signal.'

In the end, Sunil Gavaskar also joked about how he could do a backstand back in the day and how he pondered over pulling out the celebration during the Headingley Test.
'You know what, I've got to confess that after that I came here and I, and I tried not to do the backflip, no chance of, at my age, but I used to do the backstand and I was looking to do the backstand,' said Gavaskar.
'So if I could do it successfully then, then I would have shown it here, but I wasn't able to,' he added. Headingley Test can go anywhere
Rishabh Pant's innings, along with KL Rahul's gritty century, helped ensure India set a healthy target of 371 in front of England in the fourth and final innings of the Headingley Test.
The duo formed a 195-run stand for the fourth wicket, and their partnership was the major reason India reached 364 in the second innings.
At stumps on Day 4, England's score read 21/0, with the hosts still needing 350 runs for the win. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett are unbeaten on 12 and 9 respectively.
In the second innings, India were bowled out for 364. Josh Tongue and Brydon Carse took three wickets each for England.

Former India spinner Dilip Doshi dies aged 77
Former India left-arm spinner Dilip Doshi, who carved out a niche for himself despite being in the shadows of Bishan Singh Bedi, died due to cardiac arrest in London on Monday, the Saurashtra Cricket Association said. He was 77 and is survived by his wife Kalindi, son Nayan, who has also played first- class cricket, and daughter Vishakha. Doshi made his Test debut in 1979 after Bedi's retirement and played his last of his 33 games in 1983. In those matches, he took 114 wickets with six five-wicket hauls and was exceptional at home during the first three seasons, completing 100 scalps in just 28 Tests. His finest hour was getting five wickets in India's Test win at the MCG in 1981 when the visitors defended a paltry target. Doshi bowled with a fractured toe and was literally unplayable on an up-and-down MCG track. Doshi, Karsan Ghavri and the peerless Kapil Dev won that game for India. Bowled over! He was also a stalwart in English county circuit having plied his trade for more than a decade there. He represented Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire. "Dilip bhai suffered a heart attack in London. He is no more," Saurashtra CA president Jaydev Shah told PTI. "Dilip's passing away is a personal loss to me. He was like a family. He was one of the finest human beings," former BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah said. In the Indian domestic circuit, he played for Bengal and Saurashtra. In all he had a staggering 898 first-class scalps with 43 five-fors. He was Bengal's go-to man in Ranji Trophy for years. While Bedi remains India's greatest left-arm spinner, Doshi was one of the most accurate bowlers who would flight the ball when required and was very accurate for the better part of his career. The touring Australian, English and West Indies teams found it difficult to handle his arm balls, and it was Javed Miandad, who actually hastened his exit from international cricket during the 1982-83 series against Pakistan. The bespectacled cricketer was a gentleman to the core. Miandad would often tease him by enquiring about his room number in the middle of the game. "Ae Dilip tela loom number kya hai," Miandad would ask in a slurry tone. His batting and fielding in those days wasn't top notch but in that era he could survive because his bowling was from top drawer. He was a close friend of Sunil Gavaskar and the legend was first introduced to his wife Marshaniel by Doshi. After retirement, he had migrated to London where he became a successful businessman. He would divide his time between London, Mumbai and Rajkot, and it was quite strange that the BCCI never bothered to use Doshi's expertise. Former India captain Anil Kumble was among the first to pay his tribute to the late cricketer. "Heartbreaking to hear about Dilip bhai's passing. May God give strength to his family and friends to bear this loss. Nayan, thinking of you buddy," Kumble wrote on X.

India thrash Mongolia 13-0 in Women's Asian Cup qualification opener
India began their AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026 qualifiers with a 13-0 victory against Mongolia at the 700th Anniversary of Chiang Mai Stadium on Monday, June 23, 2025. The Blue Tigresses led 4-0 at half-time. This was India's biggest ever win in an AFC Women's Asian Cup (final round and qualifiers). Previously, the Blue Tigresses' 10-0 victories against Guam in 1997 and 2005 held the record.
