17th-century painting looted by Nazis to be returned by Tate Britain
A 17th-century painting looted by Nazis from the home of a Jewish Belgian art collector is being returned to his family by Tate Britain.
The government's Spoliation Advisory Panel recommended the return of Henry Gibbs' 1654 work, Aeneas And His Family Fleeing Burning Troy, from Tate Britain to the heirs of Samuel Hartveld.
The panel, which investigates claims for Nazi-looted art in UK public collections, decided the painting was 'looted as an act of racial persecution'.
Hartveld left the painting behind when he and his wife fled Antwerp in May 1940 to escape the German occupation.
Although Hartveld survived the war, he never recovered his art collection. The Nazis seized 66 paintings from his gallery on 26 March 1942 and many of the artworks are thought to be dispersed among European galleries.
The painting's return marks a significant victory for Hartveld's great-grandchildren, who are now set to receive their ancestor's lost artwork.
The Gibbs painting was bought from the art gallery Galerie Jan de Maere in Brussels in 1994 by the Tate, after René van den Broeck purchased Mr Hartveld's collection and home for a 'paltry sum', the panel said.
In May 2024, the Sonia Klein Trust, established by Mr Hartveld's heirs, launched a claim.
In a statement the trustees said they 'are deeply grateful' for the decision to return it.
'This decision clearly acknowledges the awful Nazi persecution of Samuel Hartveld and that the 'clearly looted' painting belonged to Mr Hartveld, a Jewish Belgian art collector and dealer,' they added.
'The trustees acting for the Sonia Klein Trust further thank the staff at Tate Britain for working with the trustees and their legal representative Dr Hannes Hartung, to realise the return of this important painting by a highly regarded British painter.
'The staff at Tate Britain were open minded and prompt in their approval of the Spoliation Advisory Panel's recommendation.'
They also said the 'trustees acting for the Sonia Klein Trust honour and remember the life of Samuel Hartveld and his family'.
The Sonia Klein Trust was started in 1986 by Sonia Klein, who was previously named in a will as the daughter of Mr Hartveld's widow, Clara, who died in 1951.
Ms Klein's daughter Eliana died before she did and her grandchildren Barbara, Daniel and Mark Floersheimer are named trustees.
Director of Tate Maria Balshaw said: 'It is a profound privilege to help reunite this work with its rightful heirs, and I am delighted to see the spoliation process working successfully to make this happen.
'Although the artwork's provenance was extensively investigated when it was acquired in 1994, crucial facts concerning previous ownership of the painting were not known.
'I would like to thank the Sonia Klein Trust and the Spoliation Advisory panel for their collaboration over the last year. We now look forward to welcoming the family to Tate in the coming months and presenting the painting to them.'
The panel said the 'legal and moral claims to restitution' for the heirs of someone 'forced to flee his homeland, leaving behind his property, books and art collection, are obvious', and recommended that it should be returned.
Arts minister Sir Chris Bryant praised the panel for 'helping to reunite families with their most treasured possessions that were looted by the Nazis.
'The decision to return the painting to the heirs of Samuel Hartveld and his wife is absolutely the right decision, which I welcome wholeheartedly,' he added.
The painting, which is not on display by the Tate, is believed to be a commentary on the English Civil War.
It depicts scenes from Latin poem The Aeneid, and tells the legendary story of Aeneas, a Trojan who fled the fall of Troy and travelled to Italy, where he became the ancestor of the Romans.
The independent panel, which began in 2000, has received 23 claims, with 14 works being returned to the heirs of their former owners.
The Holocaust (Return of Cultural Objects) Act 2009 allows national museums to return cultural objects, with the panel's recommendation and the arts minister's agreement.

In exhausting 'Bad Shabbos,' cringe-comedy clichés are observed a little too faithfully
"Bad Shabbos' is a labored farce that borrows from so many other better comedies — 'Meet the Parents,' 'The Birdcage' and 'Weekend at Bernie's' to name a few — that it rarely transcends its frantic patchwork of repurposed gimmicks and tropes. Its lack of originality and emotional depth may have been more forgivable had the film been legit funny. But save a few random guffaws, this whacked-out tale of a Jewish family's Shabbat dinner that goes wildly off the rails may prompt more eye rolls and exasperated sighs than were surely on the menu. (To be fair, it won the Audience Award at the 2024 Tribeca Festival, so the film clearly has its fans.) It's another warmly contentious Sabbath at the Upper West Side Manhattan apartment of Ellen (Kyra Sedgwick) and Richard (David Paymer). The long-married couple will gather with their three adult children — anxious David (Jon Bass), put-upon Abby (Milana Vayntrub) and younger, neurodivergent Adam (Theo Taplitz) — for the family's weekly meal. Yet why is this Friday night different from all other Friday nights? For starters, guess who's coming for brisket? That would be a chipper mom (Catherine Curtin) and dubious dad (John Bedford Lloyd), the parents of Adam's Catholic fiancée Meg (Meghan Leathers), winging in from 'goyish' Wisconsin to meet their future in-laws. (Can Grammy Hall be far behind?) Adam knows his quirky, noisy — read Jewish — family could easily alienate Meg's parents and he's desperate for an incident-free gathering. Fat chance. That's because, aside from the observant Ellen's barely veiled disdain for non-Jews (she's pretty awful to the solicitous Meg, who's studying to convert), Abby's obnoxious boyfriend, Benjamin (Ashley Zukerman), will be joining her, and he never fails to antagonize the unstable, Klonopin-popping Adam. That Adam suffers chronic constipation and Benjamin has diarrhea-inducing colitis is no medical coincidence but one of several predictable signs that, well, something's gonna hit the fan. It sets off the evening's desperate downward spiral, lots of silly mayhem and an absurd cover-up. Suffice to say, any sane person would have immediately reported the guest's untimely demise to the authorities — but then, of course, there would be no movie. Still, co-writers Zack Weiner and Daniel Robbins (Robbins directed) don't provide a plausible enough reason for the group to so haplessly hide the corpse, making the death feel like more of a slapdash device than a cogent story twist. As a result, some may find the film as painful and awkward to watch as it is for the characters to experience. One bright spot is actor-rapper Cliff 'Method Man' Smith's endearing turn as Jordan, the building's hip doorman ('It's Shabbos, baby!'), who considers the Gelfands his favorite tenants and jumps in to help them out of their mess. At one point, he even amusingly dons a yarmulke and pretends to be an Ethiopian Jew (long story). But the ticking clock wedged in to add tension to Jordan's 'assistance' feels undercooked. The rest of the cast does their best to rise — or descend — to the occasion, with Sedgwick quite good in her largely thankless role as the controlling Jewish mother. Leathers is winning as David's devoted bride-to-be, with Curtin enjoyably nimble playing a kindly Midwest mom. But the usually reliable Paymer seems a bit lost in his oddly-conceived part as the befuddled Richard, a fan of self-help books. Because the film leans so heavily into its breakneck antics, the folks here mostly come off more as a collection of stereotypes than as realistic people tackling a credible crisis. Sure, it's broad comedy, but that shouldn't preclude sharpening the characters to better sweep us along on their nutty journey. (At just 81 minutes plus end credits, the film had room to grow.) In particular, Adam, a wannabe soldier for the Israel Defense Forces, starts out too troubled and extreme for his depiction to fade as it does. And though the writers may have been reaching for dark laughs, Ellen and Richard's excuse-laden coddling of their challenged child, presumably now in his 20s, teeters on negligence — or, at the very least, bad parenting. By the time the film gets around to revealing its more human side — epiphanies gained, lessons learned — it's too little, too late. Near the end, when an appalled Ellen says of the dizzy bunch, 'We're all horrible,' it's hard to disagree. Ultimately, the movie's heart may be in the right place (Robbins has said the film is inspired by his own New York Jewish roots), but its head not so much. Dawn French ‘dismisses' Oct 7 Hamas attacks

The British comedian and actress, 67, posted a video of herself to X in which she appears to mimic Israel's supporters amid the military campaign in Gaza. In the video, published by French on the social media platform on Thursday, she says about the conflict in the Middle East: 'Complicated, no, but nuanced. But [the] bottom line is no.' She then goes on to mimic apparent defences of Israel's military campaign in neighbouring Gaza since the Hamas-led massacre in 2023, saying: ''Yeah but you know they did a bad thing to us'... Yeah, but no. ''But we want that land and there's a lot of history…'. No. 'These people are not even people, are they really?' No.' In response to the viral tweet, which has been viewed more than half a million times in the 24 hours since it was published, Tracy-Ann Oberman, the West End star and playwright, branded French's tone as 'mocking'. The Jewish actress, 58, reposted French's video and said: 'I am so saddened by this post. 'This mocking voice 'bad thing' of October 7 that Dawn (who I revere by the way) appears to be mocking involved the most horrific terrorist attack involving rape, sexual violence, burning alive child, mutilation and the taking of civilian hostages.' She added: 'Why would Dawn seem to deny that which has affected so many of us personally in the most painful way possible. 'I can mourn the horrors of the war in Gaza whilst also remembering the horrors of what started it. Is this how most of our industry feels now – Oct 7 was a 'little thing'? NO!' Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to Hamas's massacre on Oct 7 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed by the terror group and 251 others were taken hostage. There are now 56 hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza, at least 20 of whom are believed to be alive. Israel said its expanded offensive in the Strip, named Operation Gideon's Chariot, will increase the chances of returning the missing. The Hamas-run health ministry that operates in Gaza has said that at least 54,000 people have been killed in the territory during the war. Hamas has rejected proposed ceasefire and hostage release deals that do not guarantee a full Israel withdrawal from the Strip and an end to the war. Other responses to French's post include the financier Ben Goldsmith, who has been a strong defender of Israel's response to the Hamas terrorist attacks. He remarked: 'Wow, this is really bad. Who knew.' Elsewhere, comedy writer and self-described 'champion of Jewish rights' Lee Kern wrote: 'What you sneeringly mock as a 'bad thing' included the grieving children I met in hospital whose friends and family had been murdered, kidnapped and raped and who themselves were coming to terms with their own life-altering injuries. 'It also includes the 1,200 people murdered and tortured on October 7th… you proactively broadcast – with misplaced pride – a wicked glee in your mockery and dismissal of Jewish suffering, pain and death.' In a subsequent post following the criticism by Oberman, French clarified that she did not mean to 'support the atrocities of Oct 7th'. Writing on X, she said: 'I do not say 'a little thing'. In NO WAY do I support the atrocities of Oct 7th. Of course not. Appalling. Horrific. 'But starving innocent children is not the answer. NO is the answer to ALL of it, Tracy.'
