WWDC 2025: Apple could present major software updates with less focus on AI
Although platform updates are expected to headline the event, Apple Intelligence is still likely to see meaningful enhancements with third-party partnerships and deeper integration with apps

Apple is set to host its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) starting June 9, 2025. At the event keynote, the US-based technology giant has confirmed to unveil platform updates across its ecosystem, including the next version of iOS. While artificial intelligence-powered features are expected to be a part of the announcements, it may not take centre stage this year.
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, 'the conference may be a letdown from an AI standpoint.' His report suggests Apple is not planning any major new features for its Apple Intelligence suite and will instead focus on significant updates to its operating systems across devices — iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and more.
Bloomberg had previously reported that Apple is aiming for a broader platform overhaul, emphasising consistency and streamlined navigation across devices. The company may also revamp the naming convention for its operating systems.
Although platform updates are expected to headline the event, Apple Intelligence is still likely to see meaningful enhancements. Apple may introduce a new software development kit (SDK) and related frameworks that allow developers to integrate Apple Intelligence tools, like Writing Tools, more deeply into their apps. Additionally, Apple is reportedly exploring partnerships with third-party AI providers like Google and Anthropic to bring their models to Apple Intelligence, similar to the current integration with OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Gurman's report also notes that Apple may be treating 2025 as a 'gap year' for AI, with more substantial announcements expected at WWDC 2026. Ongoing AI projects reportedly include a next-gen Siri based on a large language model (LLM), bringing enhanced on-screen awareness, personal context, and natural conversation capabilities.

Platform updates
Apple is reportedly preparing a significant redesign of its operating systems aimed at creating a more unified user experience across devices. This would help users transition more seamlessly between platforms such as iOS and macOS. Aesthetic updates could include translucent menus and panels inspired by visionOS, subtle motion effects, and shimmering elements that respond to device movement.
Apple may also change the naming convention for its OS versions. For example, the next version of iOS might be called iOS 26 instead of iOS 19.
Gaming app
Apple is reportedly preparing to launch a new app focused on video games across its ecosystem including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV. According to Bloomberg, this app will allow users to launch games, view achievements, check leaderboards, and access curated gaming content. It will also integrate App Store titles, much like Microsoft's Xbox app on iOS.
Apple is expected to introduce features that simplify switching from an iPhone to an Android device. One such feature, recently spotted in Android 16 beta code, is wireless eSIM transfer from iOS to Android. Currently, moving an eSIM requires carrier intervention.
These updates are likely part of Apple's compliance with the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which mandates greater ecosystem openness.
AI-powered battery optimisation
Apple is reportedly developing an AI-based battery management feature for iOS. The system would analyse app usage, background activity, and charging patterns to intelligently adjust performance and extend battery life. A new lock screen indicator is expected to show estimated charging time.
Revamped Health app
The Health app is also in line for a major upgrade. According to Bloomberg, Apple plans to introduce an AI-powered health coaching system that provides personalised wellness recommendations, expert-led videos, and enhanced fitness tracking.
For the first time, the Health app is also expected to include food tracking. However, the full rollout of this revamped experience may happen gradually, with iOS 19.4 likely delivering most of the new features.

Meta has signed a 20-year agreement to secure nuclear power to meet the growing energy demands for artificial intelligence and other computing needs at Facebook's parent company. According to a report by Associated Press, the deal will also boost the output of Constellation Energy's Clinton Clean Energy Center in Illinois. Announced on June 3, the agreement is part of a broader trend of tech companies partnering with nuclear energy providers as AI usage surges. Financial terms were not disclosed. The Clinton plant, originally set to close in 2017 due to financial losses, was sustained by Illinois' zero-emission credit program, which expires in 2027, as per the report. The Meta deal, effective from June 2027, will increase the plant's clean energy output by 30 megawatts, preserve 1,100 local jobs, and generate $13.5 million in annual tax revenue, the companies said. 'Securing clean, reliable energy is necessary to continue advancing our AI ambitions,' Meta's head of global energy, Urvi Parekh, said. The report notes that tech giants face dual pressures: increasing energy supplies for AI and data centers while meeting ambitious greenhouse gas reduction goals. Constellation, which owns the shuttered Three Mile Island plant, announced in September a plan to restart it to supply Microsoft's data centers, the AP reports. The Pennsylvania plant was the site of the U.S.' worst commercial nuclear accident in 1979. Amazon and Google have also invested in small nuclear reactors, with Amazon announcing plans two days after Google last fall, and Google investing in three advanced nuclear projects with Elementl Power last month, according to the report. The AP report adds that 25 states passed legislation supporting advanced nuclear energy last year, with over 200 nuclear-friendly bills introduced this year, per the Nuclear Energy Institute. However, the U.S. faces challenges in scaling nuclear production, with no next-generation reactors operating commercially and only two new large reactors built in nearly 50 years, completed significantly over budget and behind schedule in Georgia, the AP states. Rockstar surprises fans with new GTA San Andreas iOS update

The update, titled version 2.2.21, went live on May 29, 2025, and targets key technical issues that had affected the mobile experience. This marks the fifth update in the past year for the original iOS version, not to be confused with the Definitive Edition. Classic San Andreas receives rare mobile update from Rockstar The biggest chunk of the update comes in the form of the solution to persistent frame rate issues. Several players had complained that GTA San Andreas was not able to sustain 30FPS or more on multiple iOS models. With release 2.2.21, Rockstar has finally fixed the issue, providing smoother gameplay on supported hardware. Traffic-related bugs, cars suddenly materializing or flying off ramps, are another large set of fixes included in the patch. In spite of the availability of the updated GTA Trilogy: The Definitive Edition on mobile devices, Rockstar has continued to update the original release to the surprise of the community. The increase in frame rate, in fact, adds much-needed stability to gameplay, which has grown jerky on current hardware. Rockstar's surprise upgrade of the original GTA San Andreas on iOS shows that even classic titles continue to get a look. While fans continue to speculate Vice City's comeback in GTA 6 buzz, it's a nice reminder that the classics have not been neglected. Meta becomes latest big tech company turning to nuclear power for its AI needs
Washington: Meta has cut a 20-year deal to secure nuclear power to help meet surging demand for artificial intelligence and other computing needs at Facebook's parent company. The investment with Meta will also expand the output of a Constellation Energy Illinois nuclear plant. The agreement announced Tuesday is just the latest in a string of tech-nuclear partnerships as the use of AI expands. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed. The Meta-Constellation deal takes effect in June of 2027, when the state's taxpayer funded zero-emission credit programme expires.
