Metsera rises as experimental weight-loss drug shows promise in small early-stage trial

June 9 (Reuters) - Shares of weight-loss drug developer Metsera (MTSR.O), opens new tab gained as much as 25% on Monday after the company's experimental drug helped patients lose weight in a small, early-stage trial, showing potential for a monthly dosing regime. The drug developer, which went public in January, is one of the many that are eyeing the lucrative market of weight-loss drugs that have been dominated by GLP-1 drugs from Novo Nordisk ( opens new tab and Eli Lilly (LLY.N), opens new tab. The drug, MET-233i, helped patients lose 8.4% of their weight, when adjusted for placebo, at 36 weeks. The drug belongs to a class of medicines which mimic the pancreatic hormone amylin that is co-secreted with insulin. It is being developed as a standalone treatment, and in combination with the company's other GLP-1 drug MET-097i. The two hormones combined suppress hunger, help control patients' blood glucose. Metsera's shares, which touched $35.19 in early trading, were up 5% at midday. The first wave of obesity drugs was based mainly on the gut hormone GLP-1, but drugmakers are looking for medicines that target other hormones or help preserve muscle while losing fat for their next generation of drugs. Data from Novo Nordisk's experimental drug CagriSema, which was touted to be the successor of its blockbuster obesity drug Wegovy, has so far fallen below investor expectations. Data from Metsera's 80-patient study showed that its drug has a half life of about 19 days, supporting once-a-month dosing. This compares to the five to seven days for Lilly's Zepbound and Novo's Wegovy that are taken weekly, said Evercore ISI analyst Umer Raffat. The so-called half life of a drug refers to the time it takes for the initial dose of the medicine to decrease by half in a patient's body. It helps determine how frequently a drug should be taken to achieve benefits. Drugmaker AstraZeneca (AZN.L), opens new tab is also testing an amylin-based obesity drug in early trials.

Train service between Moscow and North Korea's Pyongyang to resume this month, says Russia

June 9 (Reuters) - Russia and North Korea plan to restart a direct passenger train service between Moscow and the North Korean capital Pyongyang this month for the first time since 2020, Russia's state-owned rail monopoly said on Monday. Russian Railways said it had agreed with North Korea's railways ministry to resume a twice-monthly service between the two capitals on June 17, a journey it said took eight days and which, at over 10,000 km (6,213 miles), was the longest direct rail journey in the world. Another service between Pyongyang and Khabarovsk, a Russian city close to China's northeastern border, will restart two days later. The services will be operated by Korean State Railway, the state operator, and in the case of the Moscow-Pyongyang route will see a North Korean passenger railcar hitched to the regular Moscow-Vladivostok service and then re-attached to another train. Passenger rail traffic between Russia and North Korea was suspended in February 2020 at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Moscow and Pyongyang have since ratcheted up cooperation, including in the military sphere since President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty last year. North Korea confirmed in late April that it had sent more than 10,000 troops and weapons to Russia to assist in its war in Ukraine, aid which proved crucial for Moscow in recapturing Russia's western Kursk region from Ukraine. The two countries already operate a passenger rail service between Vladivostok in Russia's Far East and Rason, a North Korean port city. The nations are also linked by freight rail networks, although Russia does not disclose the size of the cargo traffic.

Canada's Competition Bureau suing DoorDash over prices, discounts

OTTAWA, June 9 (Reuters) - Canada's Competition Bureau said on Monday it was suing DoorDash and its Canadian subsidiary for allegedly advertising misleading prices and discounts. The bureau said in a statement that it found that consumers were unable to purchase food and other items at the advertised price on DoorDash's websites and mobile applications due to the addition of mandatory fees at checkout. The bureau said it was suing to stop DoorDash from what it called deceptive price and discount advertising. It is seeking a penalty from the companies and wants them to offer restitution to affected consumers.
