High Marks for Hong Kong's University Degree Courses

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach Neswire – 14 March 2025 – Hong Kong has emerged as the world's 'most improved' location for university degree courses, reflecting the determination of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government to develop the city into an international education hub with strong emphasis on nurturing talents in innovation and technology.
The 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject rated six local degree courses among the world's top 10, up from three last year, while 68% of 231 programmes from nine Hong Kong institutions rose in the rankings.
In the field of data science and artificial intelligence (AI), five Hong Kong universities are ranked among the world's top 50, the highest number in Asia and second-highest globally.
This demonstrates the city's immense potential and competitiveness in technological innovation, providing crucial support for the city's future economic transformation and upgrading. The Government has also rolled out various supportive policies and initiatives to attract talent and businesses to Hong Kong to participate in driving related products to market and engaging in innovation.
Hong Kong spares no effort in developing the city into an international hub for post-secondary education.
The surge up of Hong Kong's rankings was contributed by the comprehensive three-pronged approach involving the HKSAR Government, the efforts by universities in teaching and research, as well as social resource collaboration.
The leap up the rankings also further enhanced the 'Study in Hong Kong' brand, helping world-leading academic disciplines in the city attract top-tier students for advanced studies.
'The Education Bureau will also continue to collaborate with institutions to attract more students from around the world to build Hong Kong into an international hub for high-calibre talent,' said Secretary for Education Dr Choi Yuk-lin.
According to the QS release, about 80% of subjects of the city's universities had shown improvement in academic reputation, with significant progress across most indicators. This highlighted Hong Kong's continued leadership in the field of higher education, serving as a global model of success.
This year's ranking compared over 21,000 academic offerings, taken by students at more than 1,700 universities across 100 countries and territories in 55 subjects.

Education Minister honours 27 schools for 2023 TIMSS results

Dr. Mohamed bin Mubarak Juma, Minister of Education, honoured 27 public and private schools for their performance in the latest 2023 cycle of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), having achieved scores exceeding 550 points in both subjects, placing them at high and advanced performance levels. The ceremony, organised by the ministry, also honoured 86 teachers whose efforts contributed to their fourth-grade and eighth-grade students achieving high scores. Recognition was extended to school coordinators and ministry staff involved in the proper implementation of the study. The minister expressed appreciation to the public and private schools, including their teaching and administrative staff, students, and parents, as well as to the relevant sectors within the ministry for their effective role in supporting the Kingdom of Bahrain's participation in this important international study. Dr. Juma congratulated the honoured schools for their commendable results in the two core subjects, noting that performance in mathematics and science serves as a key indicator of educational development. He highlighted that international studies offer a valuable opportunity to assess performance, analyse results, identify strengths and challenges, and inform evidence based policies that enhance the quality and sustainability of education services. On her part, Dr. Samah Mohammed Al Ajjawi, Assistant Undersecretary for the Development of Education and Learning Policies and Bahrain's National Coordinator for the TIMSS study, said that the ministry is implementing development plans for both subjects, which aim to improve teaching methods, particularly by leveraging artificial intelligence tools. She noted that the TIMSS study plays a key role in assessing how curricula and teaching practices impact student learning, and that its results provide vital indicators for decision makers to design effective development strategies that improve learning outcomes in mathematics and science, essential for building scientifically and technologically advanced societies. Why The US Is Building Massive Data Centers In UAE.

The United States and United Arab Emirates (UAE) have announced partnership to build a massive data center complex in Abu Dhabi to advance artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities with 5-gigawatts of capacity. The agreement, announced during the US President Donald Trump's recent visit to the UAE, will mark the largest data center deployment outside of the United States, according to the Commerce Department. The project is also expected to expand the footprint of American AI and cloud companies in the Middle East, allowing them to better serve the global south. However, some key Senate Democrats have reportedly urged the Trump administration to revisit new artificial intelligence deals with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. According to a report in Bloomberg, these Democrats say that the expanded sales of AI chips to the Middle Eastern countries risk exposing advanced technology to China and Russia, while potentially limiting supplies available for American companies. Incidentally, the US has restricted sales of advanced AI semiconductors to Saudi Arabia and the UAE since 2023, as part of a broader effort to prevent China from accessing banned American technology via intermediaries. Now in a long post on Twitter, David O Sacks the 'White House AI and Crypto Czar', a newly-created role with the goal of building a legal framework for the cryptocurrency industry, defended Trump's AI data center partnership with UAE. He wrote that if the US does not take this deal, it will be Advantage China, which has been more than eager to offer Huawei+DeepSeek tech stack to UAE. David Sacks wrote his post in response to Ro Khanna's address where he questioned partnership and asked: Why are we putting data centers and research hubs in Dubai? We should have those high-paying new technology jobs in the United States. What happened to 'America First'? Quoting Ro Khanna, David Sacks wrote that 'some Democrats, including my friend Rep. Ro Khanna, are asking why we aren't putting the new AI data centers in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Actually we are doing that. The key to building new data centers is easier permitting and more power generation, both of which were effectively impossible under the Biden administration.' He added, 'The Trump administration is alleviating the bottlenecks. As the President says, we are going to 'Drill, Baby, Drill' — and we are also going to Build, Baby, Build. I hope Democrats will cooperate with us on this agenda; let's do it together for the betterment of the USA.' As for doing it in UAE and not America, Sacks wrote, 'With respect to UAE, it's important to understand that the deal has a matching investment provision, so UAE will fund the build-out of AI infrastructure in the U.S. at least as large and powerful as that in UAE. And in UAE, the vast majority of the compute will be owned & operated by American cloud companies, to serve the region as well as the Global South. These are America First deals that drive investment into the U.S., improve our trade balance, and lock in American technology as the global standard.' He went on to add that if the US does not take this deal, China will. 'The alternative is for the U.S. to reject the resource-rich Gulf States and drive them into the arms of China, which is eager to sell them a Huawei+DeepSeek tech stack. And China won't gainsay the opportunity by asking local partners why they aren't building their data centers in Beijing or Shanghai instead. China will just fill out the purchase orders and ship the chips, making Chinese technology the standard. We shouldn't let this happen. We still have a limited window to ensure American technology dominance in global AI infrastructure. Let's seize it.'

Boeing Secures Record Order During Trump's Gulf Tour

President Trump's Gulf tour began Tuesday with the lifting of long-standing U.S. sanctions on Syria and a massive $600 billion investment deal from Saudi Arabia to invest in the American economy. The visit quickly led to a flurry of other investments, including multibillion-dollar AI deals between U.S. chipmakers Nvidia and AMD with Humain, a newly launched artificial intelligence firm backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. On Wednesday, the momentum continued in Qatar, where Trump unveiled Boeing's largest widebody aircraft order ever. Faisal Al-Mudahka, editor-in-chief of the Gulf Times, described Qatar Airways' massive purchase of between 160 – 200 widebody aircraft from Boeing—the largest order in the company's history—as a 'win-win' for both nations. 'I think Donald Trump and Qatar know how to package things to make political gains and economic gains,' Al-Mudahka said. Qatar Airways has become one of the world's top airlines, with a growing market share worldwide. The expanded fleet of the 787 Dreamliner model will allow the airline to add more long-haul flights. Earlier, Trump participated in a signing ceremony on a series of bilateral agreements with Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Doha, including: Qatar Airways signed an agreement to purchase 210 787 Dreamliner and 777X aircraft powered by GE Aerospace engines. A number of defence agreements, including a letter of intent on defence cooperation and a letter offer and acceptance for MQ-9B drones. A joint declaration of cooperation between the two nations. President Donald Trump says Boeing won an order from Qatar Airways amid a flurry of deals between Gulf nations. The agreement signed by the carrier is for 160 aircraft in what it said is the largest order in the company's history — Bloomberg TV (@BloombergTV) May 14, 2025 After the signing ceremony, Qatar's emir said he had a 'great' few hours with Trump, during which they discussed various topics. 'I think after signing these documents, we are going to another level of relations,' the emir said. Trump also congratulated Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg, who was also in Doha, for the signing of the deal. Here's the White House's fact sheet of the agreement with Qatar to generate at least $1.2 trillion in economic activity between both countries: The landmark deals celebrated today will drive innovation and prosperity for generations, bolster American manufacturing and technological leadership, and put America on the path to a new Golden Age. Since President Trump took office, his commitment to American manufacturing and innovation has attracted trillions of dollars in investments and global commercial deals. Allies like Qatar are partnering in the United States' success. Boeing shares rose 2% in the late morning cash session in New York, trading around the $208 handle—the highest level in roughly 15 months On Tuesday, at the start of Trump's trip, Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund announced a $4.8 billion Boeing order. President Trump is expected to return to the U.S. later this week, ready to boast about the mega-deals signed with Gulf states—deals he's likely to frame as part of the agenda to ascend America into a new Golden Age. This strategy comes as easing trade tensions between the U.S. and China has helped the stock market recover much of the recent trade war-related losses.
