Jeff Bezos' 'rock' who'll be by his side as he weds Lauren Sanchez: Adopted father fled Cuba as a teen - and bravely invested in 'start-up' Amazon

Daily Mail6 hours ago

When Jeff Bezos weds his girlfriend of six years, Lauren Sanchez, in Venice this week, there'll be one man by his side who's been a constant in the Amazon mogul's life - and even funded his global brand when it was a mere start-up.
Despite protests from locals, Italy 's Lagoon City will play host to one of the biggest celebrity weddings in recent decades, when the billionaire Amazon CEO, 61, marries ex journalist Sanchez, 55.
The guest list, thought to be just under 200 people, could feature some of the most famous faces in the world - with Oprah, Kim Kardashian and Bill Gates all rumoured to be jetting in to help the happy couple celebrate.
However, it is Miguel Bezos, the man whose name the entrepreneur took when he was just four, after his mother Jacklyn married him in 1968, who will steel his nerves as Sanchez walks down the aisle.
Miguel, who goes by the name of 'Mike', legally adopted Bezos and raised him as if he was his own son - backing his business ventures even when Jeff warned him he might lose his money.
Now 79, Miguel has frequently been dubbed a 'rock' in the Amazon billionaire's life and he's likely to play a major part in this week's three-day nuptials.
As one of the world's richest men, Jeff - worth around $227billion - has frequently made reference to Miguel's extraordinary rags-to-riches life, after his father fled his native Santiago de Cuba, the second largest city on the Caribbean island, when Fidel Castro seized power.
Three years ago, he presented Miguel with the award for 'embodying the heart of the immigrant story' at the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Awards.
Father and son: Miguel Bezos has been a constant in the life of the Amazon mogul since he adopted him when he was just four, after he married Jeff's mother Jacklyn in 1968 (Pictured: Miguel and Jeff at the Statue Of Liberty Museum Opening Celebration at Battery Park on May 15, 2019)
Jeff became visibly emotional as he described how Miguel had left for the US at just 16 'fighting for a better life' after Castro nationalized his father's successful lumber mill business.
He said Miguel had endured 'tough experiences' saying immigrants quickly learned how to be resilient. He said: 'That's certainly the story of my dad. He came from Santiago, Cuba. He was 16. He spoke no English, he had to make his way.
'He had those tough experiences. I think in every immigrant you'll find a deep optimism and a deep resilience too.
'My dad is an intense hard worker. My dad is warm and he teaches an easy smile. He adds he and his siblings could not 'have had a better role model.'
Earlier, in 2019, he bought his father a star, costing $2million, on a piece of artwork at the Statue of Liberty museum in New York which honours immigrants.
The Amazon founder is actually the biological son of Ted Jorgensen - and was born on January 12, 1964 as Jeffrey Preston Jorgensen - but became estranged from his father when he split from his mother Jacklyn 17 months later after his birth.
Soon after Jacklyn started dating her co-worker, Mike Bezos, and, after the pair were wed, she asked Jorgensen's legal permission to allow her new husband to adopt their son, Jeffrey, and he agreed.
Jorgensen was only revealed as Bezos's biological father in October 2013 and only learned the identity of the son when approached by a writer working on a biography.
Reporter Brad Stone, author of 'The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and Amazon,' tracked Mr Jorgensen down to a small bike repair shop in Glendale Arizona in 2012.
He was stunned to discover Mr Jorgensen had no idea who Bezos was or his intimate connection to him.
Jorgensen said: 'I'm anxious about it. I would like to connect with him. I'm not in great health.
'I don't plan on dying just yet but it does make me think, it plays a part in wanting to see him.
'I'm his biological father and I just want to shake his hand and tell him he's done well and be recognized as his father. I would want that no matter what he turned out to be.'
The pair never reconciled before Jorgensen's death in 2015 but a year before he died he begged his son to get in touch with him.
Jorgensen, who owned a small biker repair shop in Arizona, told MailOnline: 'I don't think he will come to me now. I haven't heard a word from him or had any sign that he wants to connect with me.
'I hoped with the publicity it might happen but I can't blame him. I guess I wasn't a very good father.'
When asked about his biological father in 1999, Bezos told Wired: 'The reality, as far as I'm concerned, is that my dad is my natural father.
'The only time I ever think about it, genuinely, is when a doctor asks me to fill out a form.'
Shortly after getting married, Miguel graduated in maths and computer science from the University of Albuquerque in New Mexico.
The talented graduate was offered a job with Exxon, and the family moved to Houston, Texas - upping sticks whenever a new role with Exxon came up.
Bezos eventually went to Princeton, where he graduated in 1986. Miguel and Jacklyn backed their son's ideas, investing $245,573 in Amazon back in 1995 - despite Bezos warning them it was incredibly risky.
Speaking of their investment in the past, Miguel said: 'We were fortunate enough that we have lived overseas and we have saved a few pennies so we were able to be an angel investor. The rest is history.'
That stake, around 3.4 per cent of the company, is likely to be worth over $30billion now, although it is not known exactly how much the couple still own.
In 2023, the Amazon CEO relocated from Seattle to South Florida, revealing he wanted to be closer to his parents.
'My parents have always been my biggest supporters. They recently moved back to Miami, the place we lived when I was younger,' Bezos said.
'I want to be close to my parents, and Lauren and I love Miami. Also, Blue Origin's operations are increasingly shifting to Cape Canaveral.

Who is Dermot Mulroney's estranged wife Prima Apollinaare as he files for divorce after 14 years of marriage

My Best Friend's Wedding star Dermot Mulroney filed for divorce from his longtime wife, Prima Apollinaare, after nearly 15 years of marriage. It was reported on Tuesday that the 61-year-old actor is asking for spousal support and for the court 'to block' estranged wife Prima, 52, from receiving any support from him. Both parties cited 'irreconcilable differences' as the reason for the end of their marriage. But who is Dermot's soon to be ex-wife Prima and what does she do? Prima, whose real name is Tharita Cutulle, was born to musicians in Italy. She works as a singer songwriter in California. According to reports, she filed paperwork to change her name in January 2015, seven years after meeting Dermot. Prima initially materialized as a solo artist in 2017 when she dropped her first single, Stand Up for Love. She has since released two EPs, and well as an album, 22, which was released last year. Her genre of music is described as pop and the time of writing Prima has 47,603 monthly listeners on Spotify. At the beginning of the month, Prima revealed on Instagram that she has new music in the pipeline. In a post shared on Instagram, she tagged songwriter and producer Eren Cannata, she wrote: 'Me and @erencannata are working on new music can't wait for you to hear it.' Besides writing and making music, Prima is a fan of playing live shows and has frequently performed at Black Rabbit Rose in Los Angeles, most recently on June 23. Beyond her music career, Prima has also worked as an actress. She is credited as having appeared in one episode of Carnival Row, the fantasy television series which stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, in 2023. According to IMDb, she also starred in the 2025 psychological thriller Like Father Like Son alongside her estranged husband, Dermot. Written and directed by Barry Jay, the film stars Dylan Flashner as Eli McKinnon, a young man who becomes a serial killer after witnessing his father (Mulroney) commit murder. The film was panned by critics following its release in January. When she's not living and working in LA, Prima loves to travel and has shared images of her holidays back at her home country of Italy. Prima started dating actor Dermot in 2008 after bonding over their love of music. In February 2024, the pair gave no indication of relationship troubles as they performed a duet of Islands in the Stream on Fox's We Are Family. When asked his reaction to getting the call to do the show, Mulroney told EW: 'It was such an amazing phone call to get... They knew Prima's music and put together that we are this sort of secret couple even though we've been together for 20 years.' He went on to describe how they are 'kind of a stealth Hollywood couple' and that they were honored to be on a 'game show that helps other people and isn't just fun and games.' Prima added: 'We both like to do karaoke together and we both like music so much. 'It was really an amazing experience to be on television and singing. Of course, with my husband, I play with him all the time in the house. We all play instruments. We have harps, guitars, ukulele, pianos, you name it.' She also said she 'had fun singing' with her spouse and that it was 'such an easy peasy experience' for her. According to reports, Dermot is seeking joint custody of their daughters Mabel Ray, 15, and Sally Mulroney, 17, and that attorneys' fees be split between them. People reports stated that they haven't determined 'the nature and extent of their assets will be considered community property.' The former couple are both still listed at the same Sherman Oaks address. This indicates that they are still cohabiting following their split or just sharing a mailing address for now. According to reports, Dermot stated that 'all community earnings and accumulation during marriage through the date of separation will be considered community property.'

KATIE Price has done a u-turn on her upcoming tour with Kerry Katona and the show WILL be going ahead - just weeks after she quit the gigs. As The Sun previously revealed, Katie, 46, was forced to cancel the 38- date tour after clashes with childcare commitments. 3 3 It had left tour promoters and venue bosses scrambling as tickets had already gone on sale. Big Brother housemate cosies up to new man after split from co-star turns toxic

ONE former Big Brother housemate was seen cosying up to a new man after his split from a fellow co-star turned toxic. Fans of the hit ITV2 show fell in love with the couple as they watched their romance blossom inside the house. 7 7 7 Former lawyer Jordan Sangha, 27, and food writer Henry Southan, also 27, embarked on a high-profile relationship after they left the civilian edition of Big Brother. They both appeared on the first hit series on ITV in 2023 after the show was rebooted by the commercial broadcaster. Both of the duo reached the final as Jordan was crowned the winner of the whole series. In April, the pair split up after over a year together when they took to social media with an emotional statement. Now it seems that Henry might have moved on from the partnership with another hunky-looking man. A video posed to Reddit shows the reality star looking more than merry on a potential holiday. He was seen revelling at night outside what looked like a party as he was dressed in a blue shirt and white shorts. As he danced to the Backstreet Boys hit, Backstreet's Back, he was wrapped in the arms of a tanned and muscular gentleman. His potential new man was dressed in wide leg black trousers and a chic white vest as they danced together in the moonlight. But now, it seems that the split has turned toxic if Jordan' s recent social media posts were anything to go by. Posting a glum-looking selfie on his Instagram story, he wrote: "Accusing me of harassing you. "Threatening to take things further - whilst prancing around looking like a pillock..." He added: "Grow up and gain some perspective." Users on reddit could not help but express their concern over the two stars and the rapidly unfolding situation. One wrote: "Damn this is messy." A second stated: "It's getting very ugly now," along with a bomb emoji. "I liked them both on the show, did follow them from afar after but this is getting so messy. I feel for them both, it's clearly not been a clean breakup," suggested a third fan. While another added: "It's obviously hurting him seeing H out and about and having fun without him." 7 7 7 7
