Former Socceroos boss Graham Arnold announced as new coach of Iraq
Former Socceroos boss Graham Arnold will seek to reach the finals of another World Cup after taking the reins as coach of Iraq.
The 61-year-old Sydneysider, who guided his national team to the last-16 of the global showpiece in 2022, was named as the Iraqis' head coach on Friday and will be thrown straight in to rescue their ailing World Cup quest.
Arnold, who left the Australia job in September after six years in charge, has a tough job to get Iraq to the 2026 competition in North America with the team lying third in group B of Asian qualifying.

They face two huge games against leaders South Korea in Basra on June 5 and second-placed Jordan in Amman five days later.
If they win both matches, Iraq would earn qualification for the World Cup for the first time since their debut in 1986 but it's a tall order with Arnold's Spanish predecessor Jesus Casas having been sacked halfway through his four-year contract in March after a calamitous 2-1 loss to Palestine.
It will be Arnold's first job in soccer since he steered the Socceroos through the group stages in Qatar, only to lose a close one with eventual champions Argentina in the last 16.
But he left the job after Australia made a disappointing start to the third round of qualifiers for the 2026 finals.
Now he has a second chance to get to the big show with a third or fourth-place group-stage finish still offering Arnold the chance to take Iraq through via the fourth stage of Asian qualifying.
Recently, Arnold has been helping mentor South Sydney's kickers, including Latrell Mitchell, in the NRL.

'Mouthguards in': tensions rise at Wallabies training
Exacting revenge is not the motivation as the Wallabies admit to having one eye on Fiji and another on the British and Irish Lions ahead of a high-stakes season-opening Test in Newcastle. The countdown is well and truly on until the July 6 clash with Fiji at MacDonald Jones Stadium, where Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt will be casting a discerning eye over those fortunate enough to get first crack this year in the gold jumper. The opening Test of the showpiece series against the touring Lions will take place 13 days later in Brisbane. It should be no surprise then that star fullback Tom Wright conceded competition for spots in the 23-man team to tackle the Lions for the first time since 2013 was starting to really heat up at training. "That was our fourth field session today," Wright said after Friday's robust run in freezing Newcastle. "So we've had four pretty decent licks and looks at each other in terms of combinations starting to build and combinations trying to force Joe and the coaching staff's hand in terms of 'look at me and I'm available for selection'. "A few things are heating up for training and (it's hard) just keeping a lid on it until we get mouthguards in and have a real good look at each other, which is nice. "Any time you come together you get the best out of yourselves because you know you've got to be on your game, because the talent around us is the best in the country." The fullback frontrunner, Wright ranks the opportunity to face the Lions above playing in the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France. "The Lions tour is probably second to none in terms of obviously that 12-year gap," he said. "You get a lick and then it goes away for 12 years and then it comes back around again. "So it's probably bolted in there at No.1 in terms of how cool the spectacle they're going to bring is and how exciting that opportunity is." Fiji beat the Wallabies for the first time in 69 years to all but eliminate Australia from the last World Cup. But with so much on the line this time around, the Wallabies insist redemption is not the driving factor to topple the Pacific Islanders in the two teams' first meeting since. West Indies star Jayden Seales cops fine for Pat Cummins send-off during first Test
West Indies paceman Jayden Seales has been docked 15 per cent of his match fee for his send-off to Australian captain Pat Cummins. Seales gestured the Australian to the dressing room after dismissing him in the first Test in Barbados. The 23-year-old was penalised 15 per cent of his match fee — the West Indies players are believed to earn about $US5000 a Test. Seales pleaded guilty to breaching the code of conduct covering 'language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter' when dismissed. He was charged by on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Nitin Menon, plus the third and fourth umpires. Seales, who took five wickets in Australia's first innings, also was penalised one demerit point. He now has two points in a 24-month period. When a player reaches four or more demerit points in a 24-month span, they are converted to suspension points and a player is banned.
