Laurence Fox denies encouraging people to damage Ulez cameras in London
Laurence Fox has denied encouraging people to damage ultra low emission zone (Ulez) cameras in London.
The actor-turned-politician is accused of posting messages on X between September 12 and October 4 2023 'which were capable of encouraging the commission of an either-way offence'.
In some of his posts Fox, 46, allegedly wrote about the cameras being torn down and praised anti-Ulez activists known as 'Blade Runners', Westminster Magistrates' Court heard on Friday.
He appeared in court to plead not guilty to a charge of intentionally encouraging or assisting the commission of an either-way offence.
TFL said that in the relevant period there were some 700 incidents of damage to cameras with a cost of more than £920,000, prosecutors say.
Encouraging someone to threaten damage to property can result in the same sentence as making the threat, which is up to 10 years in prison, the Sentencing Council confirmed. Fox was granted unconditional bail to attend Croydon Crown Court on 13 June.
Cameras have been repeatedly damaged after the Ulez area was expanded to cover all of London in 2023.They allow Transport for London (TfL) to monitor the cars that enter and exit the zone.
Vehicles that do not meet minimum emissions standards are required to pay a £12.50 daily fee when used in the Ulez zone, or face a fine.

Mr Couttenier said the file had accordingly been handed over to counterterrorism prosecutors, because the suspect – who also shot a Turkish man in the hand – wanted to "disrupt public order through terror." Another investigating source said he was suspected of the 'racially-motivated terrorist killing' of Mr Miraoui. Linking the incident to wider anti-Muslim sentiment in France, Mourad Battikh, a lawyer for the Miraoui family, said: "Hichem's death is the direct consequence of an atmosphere fed by stigmatisation, and the trivialisation of racist violence. "We must take the time to reflect and ask ourselves how do individuals manage to carry out the most hateful crime – to take a life – in the name of the French flag. Today, the French flag is being made into the standard of a hateful ideology." It comes amid a rising tide of hate crimes against Muslims in the country. Bruno Retailleau, France's Interior Minister, has frequently been criticised for not treating attacks on Muslims as terrorist ones. Following the latest killing, Mr Retailleau said Mr Miraoui's murder was a "racist act". There was outrage in April when Aboubakar Cissé, a 24-year-old Malian who worked in France as a carpenter, was stabbed to death in La Grand-Combe mosque, close to Arlès, in the South of France. Mr Cissé was stabbed at least 60 times by Olivier H, 21, who turned himself in to a police station in Pistoia, Tuscany, three days after the killing. He now faces trial for the "racist and Islamophobic" murder of Mr Cissé. A spokesman for the pressure group SOS Racisme said there was a 'poisonous climate' in France caused by the "trivialisation of racist rhetoric". France is home to a Muslim community of around six million – the largest in western Europe. Along with other religious groups – such as Jewish ones – followers of Islam frequently complain about discrimination and hatred. Anti-religious and racist crimes rose by more than 10% last year, according to Interior Ministry figures, with attacks on mosques and other Islamic centres increasing. Much of it has been attributed to far-Right discourse by extremist politicians and political commentators.

British man arrested in Chile after '£200k of crystal meth' found
A British man has been arrested in Chile after custom officials claimed to have discovered £200k worth of crystal meth inside his suitcase. Sources in the South American country have confirmed the man to be William Eastment, from Milbourne Port in had been travelling from Mexico to Chile when, according to Chilean authorities, his suitcase was found to contain more than 5kg (11lbs) of a statement published online, customs officials said they had identified irregularities in one piece of luggage, prompting them to track down the owner. Rodrigo Díaz, Metropolitan Customs Regional Director, said: "Once the traveller retrieved the suspicious luggage from the airport baggage carousel, it was quickly identified by our officers and moved to the secondary screening area, where the drugs team confirmed the presence of a hidden object." Inside the suitcase, the online statement added, six plastic bags were found containing 5,100 grams (179 oz) of a white substance, later found to be methamphetamine after Eastment was then handed over to anti-narcotics officers at the airport, and then remanded in custody following an initial court hearing.A spokesperson from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) said: "We are aware of a British man detained in Chile and are in contact with his family and the local authorities."
