Emma Duggan steers Meath into All-Ireland quarter-finals as she stars vs Kildare despite dire conditions
A FIVE-POINT shower from Emma Duggan helped Meath storm into the TG4 All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals as the Royals swept aside Kildare during a downpour.
Plenty of mistakes were being made yesterday as both sides struggled with their passing and ball control at a rain-lashed Manguard Park.

And although the torrential cloudbursts ceased just before the interval, the quality of football on show remained poor.
But the Royals somehow managed to up their performance despite the dreadful conditions and that was the difference between the teams.
It was the hosts, however, who opened the scoring, with Lara Curran splitting the posts in the second minute.
Six minutes later, Róisín Byrne fired over a lovely point to double the lead.

Duggan then opened her account with a free in the 11th minute for the visitors.
Four minutes later, Marion Farrelly's effort was blocked, while at the other end Byrne had a shot blocked down by Mary-Kate Lynch.
Just before half-time Duggan doubled her tally with a free. Meath had kicked four wides in the opening half too.
A third point from the boot of Duggan edged Meath in front for the first time in the 38th minute.

Three minutes later, the Dunboyne woman doubled her side's advantage when she knocked over her third point of the game.
Meath were reduced to 14 players in the 44th minute when Vikki Wall was adjudged to have fouled Claire Sullivan and she was shown a yellow card, sending her to the sin-bin for ten minutes.

With numerical advantage, Kildare went on the attack and Ellen Dowling brought an excellent save out of Meath keeper Robyn Murray in the 48th minute.
But Meath's lead was increased to four points in the 59th minute when Marion Farrelly kicked over two fantastic points in quick succession.

Kildare got their first score of the second half — and their first since the eighth minute — when Alannah Prizeman fired over a free.
But once again it was Duggan who was on target with her second point from play to restore her side's fourpoint lead.

Prizeman kicked over a late free for the hosts but the Royals held on for the win.

Hannah Tyrrell and Kate Sullivan grabbed three goals apiece at Clann Mhuire GFC on Sunday as Dublin booked their spot in the TG4 All-Ireland senior football championship quarter-finals with an emphatic Group 4 victory over Leitrim. On a day when her Na Fianna club-mate Eilish O'Dowd was coming face to face with her sister Laura – as well as their cousin Dearbhaile Beirne, who plays soccer with Peamount United – Tyrrell helped herself to an outstanding tally of 3-07 for the Jackies. In a game that was due to take place on Saturday before the original venue of Parnell Park was deemed unplayable, Dublin hit the ground running with early points from Tyrrell and Chloe Darby. Leitrim subsequently opened their account with a successful free courtesy of marauding goalkeeper Michelle Guckian, only for Dublin to immediately respond with Sullivan's maiden goal of the contest on eight minutes. Aiming to improve on last weekend's draw with Waterford, the Jackies created further daylight between themselves and their Connacht counterparts with unanswered points by Tyrrell (two), Sullivan and Niamh Hetherton. While Leitrim registered back-to-back points through Leah Fox and Muireann Devaney (free), Dublin continued to attack with extreme confidence. After Sullivan completed an opening period hat-trick with goals in the 27th and 29th minutes, Hetherton also rattled the net to guide Dublin towards an unassailable 4-12 to 0-04 interval cushion. Although Leitrim were playing with the aid of a breeze on the resumption, their Leinster rivals maintained a ruthless streak in front of the posts. Supplementing points from Hetherton and Carla Rowe – who was playing on her home club pitch – Tyrrell fired home two goals in the space of four minutes to further underline Dublin's supremacy. Fox found the range for Leitrim on a brace of occasions during the third-quarter, but with Rowe bagging an impressive 1-01 salvo, Dublin remained in the driving seat. Vivienne Egan did contribute Leitrim's seventh point as the final whistle approached, but with just over three minutes of normal time to play, Tyrrell completed a hat-trick of her own by converting her second penalty of the second half. As a result of this win, Waterford will need to record an even more comprehensive triumph at the expense of Leitrim next weekend in order to finish at the Group 4 summit. Powerful Monaghan finish defeats Down to book All-Ireland quarter-final spot
Monaghan 2-27 Down 1-26 Paul Keane reports from Armagh FOUR POINTS DOWN with 20 minutes to go, Monaghan turned a tricky situation into a hugely significant four-point All-Ireland SFC win for themselves, propelling them through to the quarter-finals as group winners. Jack McCarron's half-time introduction was vital in Armagh where the Farney claimed top spot in Group 3 and a last eight place in a fortnight. In what was a thrilling shoot-out for top spot between the two sides with perfect records in the group, Tailteann Cup holders Down led by that four-point margin with 50 minutes on the clock. But Monaghan, All-Ireland SFC semi-finalists just two seasons ago, showed all their big game experience to turn things around and McCarron's goal really got them going. The ciotog attacker added another two-pointer, as well as a single, to take his tally to 1-3 as the Farney squeezed Down out. Boss Gabriel Bannigan may be a little alarmed at just how many scoring opportunities they coughed up to a livewire Down side who picked off 1-26. But with a dozen different scorers, and tonnes of experience in this Monaghan team, he will still believe that they can go deep into the All-Ireland series as they excel under the new rules. All is not lost for Conor Laverty's Down as they will still advance to an All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final next weekend as runners up in Group 3. Pat Havern hit a dozen points for the 2010 finalists but they will rue a couple of late missed opportunities as they fought desperately to reel Monaghan in. Both sides had been putting up big scores in the group stage so an open, attacking game was always anticipated and we weren't let down. The first-half alone yielded a combined 2-29 with Down edging it by 1-15 to 1-14. Monaghan edged the two-point count in that half, four to three, with goalkeeper Rory Beggan drilling two long-range frees. Advertisement Conor McCarthy and Michael McCarville curled over two beauties as well though the Farney's early 0-6 to 0-3 lead didn't last long. Down were slightly better at sweeping up the breaking ball and created chance after chance for themselves. They scored one goal, through John McGeough in the 21st minute, but could have had a couple more. The McGeough goal came at the end of a speedy move up the field, a Danny Magill kick-pass up to the influential Ryan McEvoy followed by another 30m kick pass into McGeough who finished smartly. But Beggan pulled off a great save to deny Magill a goal in the 30th minute, diving full length to his left to tip over. Murdock fired just over close to half-time while Monaghan defender Ryan Wylie twice blocked goalbound efforts from James Guinness and Murdock. Havern had a thrilling duel with Scotstown's Ryan O'Toole. O'Toole conceded 0-5 to Havern from play and the Down free-taker filled his boots from placed balls too, converting his second two-point free in the 43rd minute to leave Down 1-20 to 1-16 ahead at that stage. They started the second-half strongly but suddenly found themselves in Monaghan's slipstream again as the promoted Division 2 team rallied. Half-time substitute McCarron pulled Monaghan back with a 50th minute goal, finishing at the third attempt after McCarthy and Bannigan had gone close. McCarron butchered a second goal chance soon after as the ball hit the post and bounced out to safety. But the experienced attacker slotted a brilliant two-pointer in the 58th minute to tie a pulsating game up yet again, 2-21 to 1-24. Monaghan brought all their big game know-how to bear in the closing 15 minutes or so as they managed the contest superbly, picking off points from O'Toole, Beggan and substitute David Garland to keep Down just about at arm's length. All-Ireland SFC permutations: Which sides can play each other in preliminary quarter-finals
The sides which progress directly to the All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals, and those who will play next weekend in the preliminary quarter-finals, have been decided. The four counties who progress directly to the All-Ireland SFC quarter finals in a fortnight are Armagh, Meath, Monaghan, and Tyrone. They topped their respective groups and have an extra week to recover before last eight action on June 28/29 The sides which finished second in their groups - Kerry, Dublin, Down, and Donegal - will have home advantage in the preliminary quarter-finals. They will face the teams which finished third in their groups: Cork, Galway, Louth, and Cavan. A draw will take place on RTÉ Radio One's Morning Ireland show at 8:30am on Monday to decide which sides will face each other. Counties which played each other in provincial finals or the group stage can't be drawn against each other. That means Kerry can't play Cork, Dublin can't be drawn against Galway, Down can't face Louth, and Donegal will not play Cavan. Which teams can be drawn against each other?
