Ireland team to play Luxembourg as Heimir Hallgrimsson makes five changes
Heimir Hallgrimsson has made five changes to his Ireland team for tonight's friendly clash away to Luxembourg. Bristol City goalkeeper Max O'Leary comes into the team ahead of Caoimhin Kelleher and wins his first senior cap, six years after his first call-up. Killian Phillips, the St Mirren midfielder who made his debut off the bench in Friday's 1-1 draw with Senegal, also starts with Ryan Manning making way. Everton's Jake O'Brien comes into the side - most likely at right-back - with Matt Doherty dropping to the bench. Leicester City's Kasey McAteer, who marked his first Ireland start with a goal against Senegal, keeps his place in the side, as does Will Smallbone. In attack, both Evan Fergsuson and Troy Parrott come into the side with Adam Idah and Jack Taylor dropping out. Ireland boss Hallgrimsson said: 'I'm really pleased for Max that he's getting his first cap as he's been travelling with the team since 2019. 'He's always been positive in that time, keeping up the standard without having got a cap to this point. He's getting a chance to shine and to show himself to the fans.' Going into their final game before the World Cup qualifying campaign starts in September, Ireland are unbeaten in three games this season. Hallgrimsson said: It's important to keep momentum. It's a different opponent and we're asking them to keep the same professionalism. 'It doesn't matter if it's a friendly or a competitive game, you have to keep your standards high and hopefully the guys will show that.'

Luxembourg v Ireland: Killian Phillips makes first start for Boys In Green
Live | Ireland take on Luxembourg in an international friendly with kick off at 7.45pm. Ben Blake brings you all the action. 5 minutes ago Happy hunting ground The last time Ireland played at the Stade de Luxembourg, back in November 2021, they enjoyed a 3-0 win under Stephen Kenny thanks to goals from Shane Duffy, Chiedozie Ogbene and Callum Robinson. Ireland had gone down 1-0 when the sides met in Dublin earlier that year. 7 minutes ago Five players could make their senior debuts The late call-up for Stoke City midfielder Bosun Lawal means he joins Max O'Leary, Josh Keeley, John Joe Patrick Finn and Josh Honohan as the uncapped Irish players in tonight's squad. While 28-year-old O'Leary starts to make his international bow, the other four have been named on the bench. 14 minutes ago Daniel McDonnell looks ahead to this evening's game 'What Ireland are trying to do is establish their own identity and, while the Icelander does not want basketball matches in the autumn, it's clear he wants big men in his side that might be comfortable on a court,' writes Dan. Ireland v Luxembourg preview: Heimir Hallgrimsson wants his big men to stand up and be counted For all the talk of an Irish upturn, watching Portugal claim Nations League glory on Sunday served as a reminder of the heights Heimir Hallgrimsson's side will need to reach if they are to participate in the World Cup qualification discussion. 15 minutes ago Good evening and welcome along. Heimir Hallgrimsson's men are at the Stade de Luxembourg for the second international friendly of this summer window. Having been denied a confidence-boosting win against one of Africa's top sides Senegal, albeit their second string, by Ismaila Sarr's late equaliser at the Aviva Stadium on Friday night, the Boys in Green take on a nation sitting 31 places below them in the Fifa rankings. A condensed campaign of World Cup qualifiers is set to begin in September, when Hungary and recently-crowned Nations League champions Portugal will undoubtedly provide much stiffer tests. However, Icelander Hallgrimsson – who celebrates his 58th birthday today – will be hoping to continue the small signs of progress with a victory and performance to match it here. Scheduled to kick off at 7.45pm, the game is being shown live on RTÉ 2 and we will be following events closely on the Irish Independent. Live Blog Software

Ireland's Izzy Atkinson on the hunt for new club after Crystal Palace exit
CRYSTAL PALACE HAVE announced the departure of Republic of Ireland international Izzy Atkinson. Atkinson is one of five players leaving the Eagles this summer, following their relegation from the Women's Super League. The 23-year-old winger joined from West Ham in January 2024, and made 18 appearances in all competitions. She was named Championship Player of the Month in February 2024 after goals against Southampton and Blackburn Rovers, and helped Crystal Palace to promotion alongside fellow Irishwomen Abbie Larkin and Hayley Nolan. Advertisement But Atkinson made just four appearances in the WSL last season, often going unselected for matchday squads and seeing limited action from the bench. The 2023 World Cup squad bolter has also fallen down the pecking order with Ireland. Carla Ward named Atkinson in her first squad in February, but she didn't play and has not been included since. 'She is out of favour (at Palace). There was a question about whether we should call her up but I am a big believer in giving people an opportunity to see what I can do to help and get them back on track,' Ward said at the time. 'When she comes in, we will sit down, probably give her some tough love and say, 'We need you'. She has got huge potential. She is a great young player.' The 18-cap international is now on the hunt for a new club after her Palace exit, having previously represented Shelbourne, Celtic and West Ham.
