Belmont Stakes at Saratoga is a Kentucky Derby rematch

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — The Triple Crown concludes Saturday with the 157th running of the Belmont Stakes.
The race is a rematch between Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty and runner-up Journalism, who is the favorite after winning the Preakness. Derby third-place finisher Baeza also is in the field of eight.

Sovereignty is racing for the first time since the first Saturday in May. Owners and trainer Bill Mott decided not to enter Sovereignty in the Preakness because of the short, two-week turnaround.
Journalism is the only horse running in all three legs of the Triple Crown this year. Bob Baffert-trained Rodriguez is in the Belmont after being scratched from the Derby because of a minor foot bruise that also kept the colt out of the Preakness.
The Belmont is taking place for a second consecutive time at historic Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York. The New York Racing Association temporarily relocated it there while Belmont Park on Long Island undergoes nearly half a billion dollars in renovations.

Julianna Peña and Merab Dvalishvili were scheduled to each defend their 135-pound championships. UFC fighter Kevin Holland won the first fight with Trump in the building, scaled the cage and briefly chatted with the President before his post-fight interview. ___

Horse racing is, unquestionably, its own kind of sport, defined as much by the pastel colors, fancy hats and overall decorum of its showcase events as much as by the beauty and grace of the horses who participate. Advertisement And so when the broadcast of this year's much-anticipated 157th Belmont Stakes, with a rematch between top 3-year-olds Journalism and Sovereignty in the offing, got rolling, there were the usual staples that racing fans have gotten accustomed to seeing. The race was held at Saratoga Race Course for the second straight year, as the track at Belmont is being overhauled, but there were familiar faces like handicapper Jonathon Kinchen, analyst/reporter Maggie Wolfendale and ex-jockey Richard Migliore. The race was being shown by Fox Sports, though, which meant the addition of outsiders like Curt Menefee and Charissa Thompson. That was mostly not objectionable. But the addition of former quarterback Terry Bradshaw--who does, in fairness, own a horse with Menefee that was running on Saturday--was a bridge too far for many racing fans. And still another: "Fox Sports broadcast of the Belmont is a joke with Terry Bradshaw." And it should be a good race, but still, why Bradshaw, one wondered: "The Belmont is gonna be a thriller. If I wagered, my pick would be the magnificent Journalism. But why is Fox devoting tons of screen time to ... checks notes ... Terry Bradshaw?!?"
