Delta announces expanded Hawaiian routes
Starting next December, Delta will expand service to Hawaii with a new route and increased flights on existing ones. That includes the debut of service from Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) to Kona International Airport (KOA), a nonstop trip from December 18 through March 26. The airline is also starting several Hawaiian routes earlier than usual, and increasing the number of flights.
In addition to the Kona route, Delta's flight between SLC and Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) will start earlier than ever, on October 6, with four weekly flights. That increases to daily flights in November and then to twice-daily flights between December 19 and January 5. Delta will also add a second daily flight between Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) and Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu during that time.
The route flying between ATL and OGG will also start early, beginning November 6. Flights between Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) and HNL will continue year-round, but now with upgraded aircraft from November 6 through March 28.
In a statement shared with Travel + Leisure, a Delta spokesperson said: 'We're excited to strengthen Delta's network to Hawaii this winter with the addition of new and expanded service, including our new route between Salt Lake City and Kona. With a 10% increase in seats compared to last year, we're giving customers more ways to enjoy the Hawaiian Islands during the holiday season — whether they're returning to a favorite island or discovering a new one for the first time.'

A tree broke his fall, otherwise he risked plunging "another hundred feet or so to the caldera floor, which could have resulted in his death," according to the release. Rangers were notified of the incident at around 9 p.m. They saved the visitor in a high-angle rescue, rappelling down the cliff face to hoist him back up to the ledge. On the day of the accident, the volcano – considered one of the world's most active – was spewing lava fountains of more than 1,000 feet. Evenings are an especially popular time for park visitors to visit eruptions and watch the lava glow against the night sky. However, the park said the man did not have a flashlight or headlamp. The park said it consistently warns visitors about the safety hazards of watching the volcanic eruptions. During the initial eruption, the park released a public warning, saying that a toddler wandered off from his family and ran toward a 400-foot cliff edge on Christmas Day. "Those who ignore the warnings, walk past closure signs, lose track of loved ones, and sneak into closed areas to get a closer look do so at great risk," the park had said following the close call.

Traveling to Asia from Salt Lake City just got a lot easier. Driving the news: The Salt Lake City International Airport, in partnership with Delta Air Lines, launched its first direct flight to Asia on Thursday, with nonstop daily service to South Korea's Incheon International Airport, outside Seoul. Why it matters: The new flight path will allow passengers traveling through Salt Lake City to connect to more than 50 destinations in Asia, such as Bangkok, Manila and Shanghai. Only four other U.S. airports fly direct to South Korea through Delta: Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis-St. Paul and Seattle. Global air travel suffered some hard hits on June 13, with airlines around the world canceling or delaying thousands of flights due to the turmoil in the Middle East. Weather further disrupted air travel in the U.S. Many passengers on flights to and from the United States are experiencing delays on June 13, with 1,609 flights in that category being delayed by mid-morning, according to FlightAware, which tracks air travel. That's down, though, from 8,952 the day before when inclement weather hit some areas of the U.S. The June 13 delays included major U.S. airlines, including Delta, American, United, Frontier, and Southwest. Some of the U.S. flights that were delayed or canceled originated or were flying to the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, which was experiencing severe weather from June 12 to June 13, according to WCNC. There were also a number of U.S. cancellations, although smaller in number. Worldwide, there were 15,964 delayed flights with 928 cancellations, including 168 into or out of the U.S., the site was reporting. As of mid-morning, FlightAware listed these delays and cancellations for U.S. carriers: American: 243 delays and 44 cancellations. Southwest: 219 delays and one cancellation. Delta: 183 delays and 12 cancellations. United: 71 delays and 17 cancellations. Frontier: 48 delays and seven cancellations. As disruptive as those delays are to passengers, they represented a small percentage of each airline's overall flights, especially compared to some major international airlines that were more affected by the Israeli strikes against Iran. Three major airports were closed in Israel, Iran, and Jordan, affecting air travel as air space emptied out over the Mideast region. Weather has also affected air travel the week of June 13.
