Suspect starts brush fire in California state park while fleeing sheriff's deputies
A man with a sword fleeing Santa Barbara County Sheriff's deputies started a brush fire during his attempt to get away, authorities said.
The wild sequence of events started when deputies received a report of a "suspect exhibiting odd behavior" on Wednesday at El Capitan Canyon Resort. While they were headed to the scene, the suspect tried to drive away on a dirt road, but his vehicle got stuck.
The suspect, later identified as 40-year-old Simon Khalili from Woodland Hills, then disappeared into a nearby canyon, the Sheriff's Department announced in a news release.
A few minutes later, flames erupted from the area, the department said. Around the time the fire broke out, deputies looking for the suspect learned he was allegedly armed with a sword — which would pose a danger to firefighters who needed to attack the fire before it raced out of control.
With deputies as their protection, firefighters moved into the area to battle the flames while a helicopter dropped water on it from overhead, authorities said. A K9 unit was called in to help with the search and a helicopter oversaw the scene.
Khalili surrendered himself to deputies around 7:30 p.m., about two hours after the chase began, and they turned him over to authorities with California State Parks. The fire was stopped at roughly 1 acre about 10 minutes after Khalili was captured.
Khalili was booked into a county jail on suspicion of felony arson and misdemeanor trespassing, brandishing a weapon, and negligent fire setting, according to the Sheriff's Office.
He's being held in lieu of a $75,000 bail.

The manhunt for the missing Washington father accused of killing his three daughters has authorities closing in on an area where he is believed to be hiding. The new lead comes after the CCSO handed the search for Decker over to the U.S. Border Patrol, with the department remaining in command of the criminal investigation. Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson also deployed the state's national guard to aid law enforcement by providing helicopter transportation as officials continue to comb through the state's dense wooded areas. Two men are in custody and one is on the loose after an early-morning burglary in Bonney Lake, according to police. Mark Berry, police chief for the Bonney Lake Police Department, told The News Tribune the burglary happened at a local pharmacy at about 3:20 a.m. on Monday. When The News Tribune asked him for the name of the pharmacy, he declined to answer but said it is in the area of 204th Avenue East and state Route 410. Berry said the suspects were three men. When police showed up at the pharmacy, they saw one of the men flee out the window and the two other men drive away in a white SUV, he said. Berry said investigators used the city's Flock license plate camera system 'to identify the suspect vehicle and put that information out.' A K9 from the Puyallup Police Department found the three men driving at 13th Street Southeast and Pioneer Way East in Puyallup, Berry said. The three men then ran out of the car and officers used a drone and a K9 to find two of the suspects, who are now in custody. The third is still at large. 'After a search warrant on the vehicle, we recovered several bags of stolen prescription narcotics from the pharmacy, as well as burglary tools,' Berry said. 'We are currently working with other agencies in the area who have reported similar burglaries.' Berry said the third man was last seen wearing all-black clothing and a mask.

Seattle Police: Man stabbed in the buttocks during drunken fight
A man is recovering after police say he was stabbed in the buttocks following a fight with an acquaintance. Seattle police responded to Beacon Ave. S and 15th Ave. S. around 8:20 p.m. for reports of a person stabbed. They found the 59-year-old victim on a King County Metro Coach with a stab wound to the buttocks. He was treated by the fire department and taken to Harborview Medical Center. According to police, the man and the suspect, his acquaintance, were drinking alcohol behind a gas station. While they were drinking, they got into an argument and the suspect stabbed the victim, police said. Officers set up a security perimeter around the area for a K9 scent track. However, the K9 team could not conduct the search due to the highly populated area. Officers did not locate the suspect.
