South Korea's military fires warning shots after armed North Korean soldiers violate demarcation line
South Korea 's military fired warning shots on Tuesday after armed North Korean soldiers crossed into its territory across the eastern section of the heavily fortified border.
According to a statement by South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, about 10 North Korean troops crossed the military demarcation line (MDL) within the demilitarised zone (DMZ) at approximately 5pm local time.
Warning broadcasts were issued, followed by warning gunfire, prompting the intruders to retreat to the northern side. Some of the North Korean soldiers were armed, according to the South Korean military.
The South Korean military confirmed that the incursion did not appear to be intentional, noting that the section where the breach occurred was a wooded area with unclear signage demarcating the border.
The North Korean soldiers were reportedly carrying construction equipment at the time. Their exact purpose in the area remains unknown.
"Our military conducted warning broadcasts and warning shots after about 10 North Korean soldiers crossed the military demarcation line (MDL) in the eastern area of the demilitarised zone (DMZ) around 5:00 pm local time," the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a message to reporters.
'Our military is closely monitoring the North Korean military's activity and taking necessary measures according to the operational procedures.'
This latest incident comes amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
Just a day earlier, South Korean officials reported that approximately 1,500 North Korean personnel were engaged in installing barbed wire and conducting land operations inside the DMZ as part of ongoing military exercises. Although no immediate escalation followed Tuesday's border breach, the zone has witnessed violent confrontations in the past.
A similar incident in June last year saw North Korean troops briefly crossing the line before warning shots were fired by the South, but it did not escalate further.
The DMZ, stretching 155 miles and spanning 2.5 miles in width, is considered the most militarised border in the world.
Heavily laden with an estimated two million landmines, it is fortified with tank traps, barbed wire, and combat-ready forces on both sides. It remains a legacy of the 1950–1953 Korean War, which concluded with an armistice rather than a peace treaty.
Current regional hostilities have deepened as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un strengthens military ties with Russia amid president Vladimir Putin 's war in Ukraine. Mr Kim continues to defy appeals from Seoul and Washington to resume denuclearisation talks.
Despite remarks from United States president Donald Trump earlier this year expressing willingness to reengage diplomatically with Pyongyang, North Korea has remained silent and has accused Washington of escalating hostilities since Mr Trump's inauguration.

The visible 'missiles' may be unignited heat trap flares designed to distract heat-seeking missiles away from the aircraft's engines, according to some sources. 'The third possible reason is a defect in the aircraft's power structure that arose due to prolonged intensive use of the aircraft in combat operations or a manufacturing defect,' said the channel. The staggering milestone includes troops who have been killed or wounded so severely that they cannot fight on. Advertisement NO STOPPING Even with the death toll climbing higher by the day — over 1,140 Russian soldiers killed or wounded on Tuesday — Putin appears to be doubling down. The bloody milestone comes as Putin calls for a major upgrade to Russia's ground forces, Ukrainian outlet Pravda reports. The Kremlin tyrant declared them the 'dominant force' in modern warfare and demanded faster development of 'advanced weapons systems' with 'the highest tactical and technical specifications.' In a meeting on the state armaments programme, Putin also directed resources toward strengthening Russia's navy, further signalling his long-term military ambitions. Advertisement It all comes as Russia is reportedly building up a 50,000-strong force alongside the border of Kharkiv amid fears of a fresh summer offensive to attack the city. 10 With the US backing out of direct negotiations to broker a peace deal and Putin stalling ceasefire talks, experts fear a major Russian offensive could mobilise in the coming weeks. The Ukrainian military in April reported that the Kremlin was amassing troops to prepare for a fresh assault on Kharkiv - Ukraine's second largest city. Military analysts believe he is trying to press home his advantage and capture more Ukrainian land. They warn that Putin only has a "four-month window" to get a breakthrough in Ukraine this year. And this could be the beginning of Russia's summer offensive targeting the border city of Kharkiv - the "fortress" city of Ukraine which put up the maximum resistance at the start of the invasion.

North Korea's Kim Jong Un calls for more shell production, KCNA says
SEOUL, June 14 (Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspected military industrial factories, calling them to expand production of shells that meet modern warfare needs, state media KCNA said on Saturday. Kim visited lines for pressing metals and assembly on Friday, checked the progress of shell production in the first half of 2025, and suggested new tasks for improvement, KCNA said. "If we are to increase the production of new, powerful shells of that meet the needs of... modern warfare, we need to expand and reinforce our production capacity, arrange the production process more rationally, and constantly increase the level of unmanned production," Kim said, according to KCNA. In recent months, Kim's publicised moves have focused on strengthening the military and improving ties with Russia, while North Korean state media has mostly stayed quiet on criticisms against South Korea as the latter picked a new liberal president this month. North Korea has supplied Russia with more than 20,000 containers of munitions, according to a report by the Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team, a group comprising 11 UN members, in May.
