Google partners with Elementl Power on nuclear energy sites as power demand for AI grows

Time of India08-05-2025

Google
is partnering with
Elementl Power
on three project sites for advanced nuclear energy as the energy required to power burgeoning
artificial intelligence
projects rises sharply.
Under the agreement announced Wednesday, Google will provide capital for the projects, which the companies say will each produce 600 megawatts of power capacity. No dollar figure for Google's investment was given.
"Our collaboration with Elementl Power enhances our ability to move at the speed required to meet this moment of AI and
American innovation
," said
Amanda Peterson Corio
, Google's head of data center energy.
Google and Elementl said they will collaborative with utility and regulated power companies to identify and advance new projects.
"We look forward to working with Google to execute these projects and bring safe, carbon-free, baseload electricity to the grid," said Elementl Power Chairman and CEO Chris Colbert.
U.S. states have been positioning themselves to meet the tech industry's power needs as policymakers consider expanding subsidies and gutting regulatory obstacles.
Last year, 25 states passed legislation to support advanced nuclear energy, and lawmakers this year have introduced over 200 bills supportive of nuclear energy, according to the trade association Nuclear Energy Institute.
Advanced reactor designs from competing firms are filling up the federal government's regulatory pipeline as the industry touts them as a reliable, climate-friendly way to meet electricity demands from tech giants desperate to power their fast-growing artificial intelligence platforms.
In October, Amazon announced that it was investing in small nuclear reactors, just two days after a similar announcement by Google.
A month before that, Constellation Energy, the owner of the shuttered Three Mile Island nuclear power plant said it it planned to restart the reactor so tech giant Microsoft could secure power to supply its data centers.
Three Mile Island, located on the Susquehanna River just outside Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was the site of the nation's worst commercial nuclear power accident, in 1979.
Amazon, Google and Microsoft also have been investing in solar and wind technologies, which make electricity without producing greenhouse gas emissions.
Elementl Power was founded in 2022.

India has 'no basis' to seek WTO consultations on auto tariffs: US

The US has told the World Trade Organization (WTO) that there was "no basis" for India seeking consultations with it under the trade watchdog's safeguard agreement over American tariffs on automobiles and auto components. Last week, India sought consultations with the US after Washington adopted a measure in the form of a tariff increase of 25% ad valorem on imports of passenger vehicles and light trucks, and certain automobile parts originating in or from India. The measure on automobile parts applied from May 3, 2025, and for an unlimited duration. On Monday, Washington informed the WTO that the tariffs on autos were imposed pursuant to Section 232, which is a national security statute, and the US is "maintaining these actions pursuant to the essential security exception" in the global trade rules. Insisting that it did not act pursuant to Section 201 of the Trade Act of 1974, under which it imposes safeguard measures, the US said, "These actions are not safeguard measures and, therefore, there is no basis to conduct consultations under the Agreement on Safeguards with respect to these measures." India had said that the US failed to notify the WTO Committee on safeguards under a provision of the Agreement on Safeguards (AoS) on taking a decision to apply the safeguard measure. The US imported $89 billion worth of auto parts globally last year, with Mexico accounting for $36 billion, China for $10.1 billion, and India for just $2.2 billion. Washington has given a similar response to New Delhi's proposal to impose retaliatory duties on 29 American products including apples, almonds, pears, anti-freezing preparations, boric acid and certain products made of iron and steel to counter the American tariffs on steel and aluminium in the name of safeguard measures. New Delhi told the WTO that these measures would affect $7.6 billion imports into the US. The issues at the WTO are coming up at a time when the two sides are negotiating a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). American trade officials were in New Delhi from June 4-10 for the trade pact talks.

Google warns Pixel 6a users of battery fire risk; urges urgent battery replacement

Google has issued an urgent warning for Pixel 6a users about a possible battery overheating issue. This comes after reports of some devices catching fire. A recent Android beta update shows that once a Pixel 6a battery reaches 400 charge cycles, the phone will automatically reduce its battery capacity and charging speed as a safety measure. Users who see this warning are advised to either replace their battery or upgrade their phone. In the past few weeks, two separate Pixel 6a phones reportedly caught fire, one incident in May and another just last week. Photos shared by users on Reddit and reports by Android Authority have revealed melted devices caused by battery overheating. Also read: 5 Google Pixel AI features that will make you rethink your smartphone experience right now Google confirmed it will release a mandatory software update for certain Pixel 6a models to address these risks. The update will activate features that limit battery performance after 400 charge cycles to help prevent overheating. Affected users will receive detailed information next month. The Pixel 6a launched in July 2022, offering Google's Tensor processor at a mid-range price point. Despite its popularity, this new warning raises safety concerns for current users. Battery issues are not new to smartphones. The Pixel 4a faced similar overheating problems in the past. Google responded with a software update to reduce device performance and lower overheating risks. Australian authorities even issued a recall for the Pixel 4a due to these battery concerns.
