Look: Rare fish spotted in Fujairah in signs of UAE's marine ecosystem recovery

A rare fish species has been recently spotted off the coast of Fujairah by seasoned Emirati diver and marine photographer Saleh Mohammed Al Zahouri, in what is being seen as a positive sign for the region's recovering marine ecosystem.
Al Zahouri, 49, who has been diving professionally since 1998, encountered the elusive fish during a routine dive a few days ago. Known locally as Al Hilali, or 'the crescent one,' and scientifically classified under the Sweetlips family, the fish is rarely seen in the waters of Fujairah.
'It caught me completely off guard,' Al Zahouri told Khaleej Times. 'Its colour was striking, but what surprised me was that it was swimming alone. Sweetlips are usually found in groups, so seeing a solitary one was highly unusual.'
Al Zahouri, who has spent more than 24 years documenting marine life in Fujairah, immediately captured images of the fish using his underwater camera. He noted that the discovery was not just rare, but also deeply symbolic.
'I have never seen this species here before. Divers experience the sea differently from fishermen. We are part of the environment, and we see firsthand how it changes,' he said.
'The sea is healing'
The sighting, according to Al Zahouri, may indicate a broader recovery of marine biodiversity in the area, which has endured environmental challenges such as red tide events and cyclones.
'Seeing this fish here tells me the sea is healing,' he said. 'Thanks to initiatives like coral reef farming, the marine habitat is becoming more balanced and welcoming to rare species.'

Mahmoud Hassan Suleiman Al Ali, chairman of the Fujairah Fishermen's Association, confirmed that the sweetlips fish is indeed a rare sight in local waters. He added that it belongs to the same family as other locally known species like Aboud Sanqour and Al Mutawa, whose populations have declined in recent years.
'Some species are showing signs of recovery due to improved regulations and fishing restrictions,' said Al Ali. 'Documentation from divers like Saleh plays a vital role in helping us understand what is happening beneath the surface.'
As environmental protection efforts continue along the UAE coastline, Al Zahouri remains dedicated to diving and sharing insights from the depths of the sea.
'This fish may be small,' he said, 'but to me, it represents what is possible when we truly care for our oceans.'

Canadian University Dubai (CUD) has launched a Master of Science in Design Innovation for Circular Economy (MSc DICE), to prepare graduates to lead the transition towards sustainable innovation and growth in the region. A first of its kind in the UAE, the programme will build skills capacity in support of the UAE Circular Economy Policy 2021-2031 and the Centennial 2071 strategy, to decouple economic growth from resource depletion, emphasising innovation, clean production, and digital transformation. Set in the context of pressing environmental and social challenges, the MSc DICE will equip students with the tools to rethink products, services, buildings, urban systems, and policies through the lens of regeneration and circularity. Participants will explore key pillars of the circular economy, such as sustainable manufacturing, green infrastructure, transportation, and food systems, to become key players in shaping a resilient future. Students of the programme will develop transdisciplinary fluency, engaging in courses that span policy design, systems thinking, green finance, and entrepreneurship. Unlike conventional programs in the field, the MSc DICE is not just about minimising environmental impact, it focuses on restorative and regenerative design. By empowering students to rethink material cycles, adaptive reuse, modular systems, and green urbanism, it aims to help drive climate-responsive, socially integrated design across the region, moving beyond sustainability to create urban environments that restore ecological balance, promote biodiversity, and enhance social well-being. Within the curriculum, students will be exposed to real case studies, work with industry mentors, and undertake challenges issued by public and private partners, preparing them to lead policy-shaping initiatives, design start-ups, and implement sustainable strategies. They will also have opportunities to participate in research incubators, hackathons, and design sprints, tackling issues such as waste valorisation, urban mobility, or infrastructure resilience, often in collaboration with external partners. The MSc DICE also integrates emerging digital technologies as key enablers of circularity. Students will learn how to apply artificial intelligence, 3D printing and other advanced tools in designing infrastructures that reduce waste and foster innovative circular practices. As the UAE increasingly prioritises skills growth and professional practice in sustainable development and green technologies, graduates of this programme will be well-positioned to contribute meaningfully across a range of sectors, from design and policymaking to urban development and sustainable entrepreneurship. Speaking about the aim and significance of the program, Massimo Imparato, dean of the School of Architecture and Interior Design said: "The Master of Science in Design Innovation for Circular Economy aspires to nurture a generation of circular thinkers who will reshape the built environment, from policies to materials, from neighbourhoods to megastructures. Its legacy will be seen in buildings that give back, cities that thrive within planetary boundaries, and graduates who champion systemic change, contributing to the UAE's leadership in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and beyond. By offering the first advanced programme in the region fully dedicated to design-led circular innovation, we aim to establish CUD as a pioneer in green transition education. Through partnerships with industry, R&D platforms, and public institutions, the MSc DICE will position CUD at the forefront of applied circular economy strategies, reinforcing the UAE's role as a regional and global leader in sustainable innovation."
