Apple added eight new emoji to all iPhones when the company released iOS 18.4 in March, and Samsung brought those same emoji to some devices in April with the initial release of One UI 7. The new emoji include a face with bags under its eyes and a splatter, but what do these new emoji, and the thousands of others, mean?
A "😃" or "❤️" are easy to understand, but how are "😩" and "😭" different, and what does it mean when someone sends you food emoji like "🍆" or "🍑"? Over time, emoji meanings have become subjective, depending on a message's context and wider cultural trends.

Emojipedia is an online encyclopedia of emoji managed by people who research emoji. The site sorts emoji into nine categories, including Smileys, People, Objects, Activity and more. Each category then breaks down emoji into further subsections. So if you click into Smileys, for example, you'll see sections like Smiling & Affectionate and Sleepy & Unwell.
If you click an individual emoji, Emojipedia will give you a brief description of that emoji. For example, here's what Emojipedia writes about the "🤍" white heart emoji:
"A white heart emoji, used for love and affection.
Also commonly used to discuss someone passing away or reference something heavenly or angelic."
Emojipedia will also give you a list of other emoji that this particular emoji works well with. In the case of the "🎁" wrapped gift emoji, for example, Emojipedia's suggestions include the "🥳" partying face and the "🛒" shopping cart.

In September, Google unveiled Emoji 16.0, which includes eight new emoji. Here are the new emoji.
Apple included these emoji with iOS 18.4 in March, and Samsung brought these emoji to some devices with One UI 7 in April. Other Samsung devices should get these emoji with One UI 7 in the next few weeks. WhatsApp introduced these emoji to its app in January.
How often are new emoji added?
Anyone can submit an idea for a new emoji. The Unicode Standard -- a universal character encoding standard -- is responsible for creating new emoji. Unicode proposed nine new emoji in November, 2024, including a Sasquatch and an orca. However, those are just proposed emoji. Unicode will decide in September which emoji to add next.

What about custom emoji, like Apple's Genmoji?
Apple unveiled its emoji generator, Genmoji, at WWDC 2024, and the tech giant included the feature in iOS 18.2. However, only people with an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max or a device from the iPhone 16 lineup can access Genmoji for now.
If you can't use Genmoji and want to create your own custom emoji, Emojipedia is home to two custom emoji generators.

First is Emojipedia's AI emoji generator. You can use this tool to create anything from a frog wearing a cowboy hat to a heart shaped pizza. You type your description of the emoji into the generator, and the tool will create an emoji based on your description. You can then download or copy your custom emoji to your clipboard and use it as a sticker across messaging apps like WhatsApp and iMessage. This emoji generator is free, but you can only generate three emoji per day so make sure you describe your emoji as much as possible so you don't waste one of your tries.
If you do run out of AI emoji generations for the day, you can also use the Emoji Mashup Bot, which combines two emoji from the Twemoji set. You can use this as many times as you want, but you can only choose up to 113 emoji to combine and they are all smileys. That means you can't be as creative in your creation as you might be in the AI emoji generator.

Yeah, but wait there's more! Emojipedia also hosts the World Emoji Awards on World Emoji Day, July 17. Awards are given for things like Most Popular New Emoji and Most Anticipated Emoji. Winners are determined by popular vote on X, formerly known as Twitter, and any emoji approved the year prior is eligible to win.
New emoji are added every year, and there are even awards given out for new emoji.

The winner for the Most Popular New Emoji in 2024 was the head shaking horizontally (🙂↔️) followed by the head shaking vertically (🙂↕️) and the phoenix (🐦🔥). The winner of the Most Anticipated Emoji went to the face with bags under its eyes and the Most 2024 Emoji award went to the melting face (🫠) for the second year in a row -- it still fits.
The sparkles (✨) emoji was also given the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024. Emojipedia wrote that this emoji has been among the most popular emoji since 2015, and it's been adopted as the go-to image for AI.
In 2023, the most popular emoji was the pink heart emoji (🩷) and the runner-up was the shaking face (🫨). The most anticipated emoji award in 2023 went to the head shaking horizontally (🙂↔️).

Bruce Springsteen's Blockbuster Albums Storm The Charts Together
Bruce Springsteen is spending the summer traveling around Europe, performing dates on his Land of Hope and Dreams tour. The trek began two years ago under the name Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band 2023–2025 Tour, but when he picked up the guitar again in mid-May, he later renamed the venture and brought it to the United Kingdom. Springsteen and company recently played dates in Liverpool, marking his return to the nation, and this move has spurred a buying frenzy of his catalog. Half a dozen of Springsteen's albums appear on at least one chart apiece in the U.K. this week. Four of those titles return to the rankings, becoming bestselling releases once more. Born in the USA is the only one of Springsteen's titles that returns to a sales list and appears inside the top 40. The early-career classic breaks back onto the Official Album Downloads chart at No. 35. It also lands at No. 79 on the Official Albums Sales list after not appearing on that tally at all just a few days ago. Greatest Hits also reappears on both the Official Albums Sales and Official Physical Albums charts, where it can be found at Nos. 49 and 83, respectively. Apple's Game App on iPhone vs. Microsoft's ROG Xbox Ally: The Real Winners Are Gamers
At WWDC 2025, Apple showed off plenty of changes in its preview for software upgrades due out later this year, but alongside visual shifts like Liquid Glass, the company also debuted a new Games app designed to be a hub for downloaded games. It's a continued push for iPhone, iPad and Mac owners to play and connect with others that comes as other gaming companies shift their strategies -- most notably, Apple announced its Games app days after Microsoft revealed its own ROG Xbox Ally, a powerful handheld that crams PC parts into a smaller handheld system. Ultimately, both approaches play to the strengths of each company and shore up weaknesses. Microsoft doesn't have a mobile phone user base, so it's leaning into gaming-dedicated devices that provide a more conventional gaming experience. Apple is trying to make the iPhone more user-friendly for gaming by offering a space for a personalized library of your games, easier ways to play games with others online and making it more convenient to wirelessly connect third-party controllers or promote phone-attaching controllers like the Backbone. Apple may be farther behind in gaming-specific software, but its hardware is probably already in gamers' pockets, while Microsoft is introducing another powerful device in the growing handheld space. While gamers with other systems may not flock to Apple products to play, those who only own iPhones, iPads and Macs are getting more options for what they play, especially as they've started getting more powerful titles that debut on PC and consoles. Last year, the company announced that modern games like Resident Evil 7 and 8 would be playable on its devices, from MacBooks to iPhones. Apple's gaming ambitions do rely on game developers and publishers to make their games compatible with its devices. While we are in an era of increasing availability of games releasing on multiple platforms at launch, ports of games to Macs are much rarer, and Apple will have to continue laboring to convince the games industry to make games for their computers, which still only make up just over 10% of the PC market, according to a late 2024 Canalys report. Apple has a much greater hold on the phone market, so they have a greater base for gaming on iPhones. It's unquestionable that releasing games as demanding as Resident Evil 7 and 8 on iPhones is an admirable feat that speaks to the power of modern Apple handsets. But do gamers want to play such intense titles on phones with a separate controller (or even touch controls)? Microsoft's moves will likely appeal to more conventional gamers looking for a powerful device to play games they already own on the go. Microsoft's approach to lean into handhelds follows a relatively recent rise of handheld PCs, which kicked off with the Steam Deck in 2022. But with that popular system already showing its age, the newer and more powerful ROG Xbox Ally models (the standard Xbox Ally and beefed-up Xbox Ally X) will likely be able to get higher graphics quality and framerates than Valve's handheld. Microsoft's approach is more self-contained, too. While the ROG Xbox Ally models both have a 7-inch display that's only a bit bigger than the largest 6.86-inch screen on the iPhone 16 Pro Max, Microsoft's devices have integrated controllers on either side with buttons and thumbsticks. It will be easy to pick them up and play, while iPhone players will have to wirelessly connect gamepads and prop up their smartphones on a wall or object. It's worth noting that Microsoft's handheld will have the additional advantage of its operating system, and while we're still in the early days of handhelds running Windows 11, it's still the most popular PC OS for playing games -- and they'll be able to run game mods, Microsoft acknowledged in an official post. The select few media members who got an early look at the handheld this weekend were reportedly impressed by the ease of switching between different game launchers, from Xbox to Activision Blizzard's to Epic, to play games siloed in each. Players who already own games in those launcher libraries will conceivably be able to use them on the Xbox Ally without having to re-buy them. Apple's Games app aims to even the playing field in software -- it works like a launcher, and should make it easier to sort through and play the many games on an iPhone, iPad or Mac. While gamers won't be able to transfer the versions they already bought on other platforms, Apple has a similar buy-anywhere approach within its device lineup, so they'll be able to pay for one copy of the game and play on their iPhone or M-series Mac. While neither company will revolutionize gaming, the Games app in iOS 26 and other Apple software updates are expected to arrive in September or October, and the ROG Xbox Ally models are expected to arrive by the end of the year. The holidays will see another evolution in the way both tech giants appeal to gamers.
