Victoria's first child fitted with ankle bracelet ‘pretty happy' with his new device

The 15-year-old, who cannot be legally named, walked free from court on Wednesday after spending the past three months in a youth jail.
He is the first of 50 of the state's incorrigible underage criminals to agree to be fitted with an electronic ankle bracelet under a controversial new trial.
The new bail legislation, passed by the Allan government to counter the state's youth crime problem, allows children aged 14 to 18 to be fitted with an ankle bracelet on the condition they agree to wearing the device.
Magistrate Gail Hubble court ordered the boy to be assessed for an electronic device a fortnight ago.
Court staff placed the tracking device on his left ankle in the holding cells of a children's court before he was released to his mother on Wednesday morning.
His mother, who also cannot be legally identified, told the Herald Sun her son was 'quite happy' to be released with the tracking device.
She said he would rather be fitted with the device than return to Parkville for a further stint behind bars.
'He was pretty happy to be out,' she said.
'The minute he was out, he was on the phone to his mates.'
The boy's mother said the device offered some sort of security for her and the community.
She said she has planned to take her son to the movies and to get a haircut in the coming days.
He still has several appointments and behavioural programs scheduled in the coming days.
'I'm happy with it, I'm happy if it's on for two weeks and I'll be happy if it's on for longer,' she added.
'At least I know he's going to be around.'
The device will notify youth justice staff instantly if he does not abide by his 8pm to 6am curfew.
It can notify staff that he is an 'imminent danger' if he breaches his strict bail conditions.
They will also be notified instantly if he attempts to tamper with the device.
They are then expected to call triple-0 and report his current location.
The teen has been prosecuted over a plethora of aggravated burglaries, car thefts and home invasions.
He will be formally sentenced in early June.
It is expected two more youths who have been assessed for the trial will face court on Thursday.

Man arrested after allegedly escaping Brisbane correctional centre, committing crime spree
A man has been charged after allegedly committing a crime spree in Brisbane's southern suburbs while on the run from a correctional centre. Police were called to Tristania Way in Mount Gravatt East shortly after 2am Sunday after reports a stolen Mercedes Benz sedan crashed into several parked vehicles. 'The Mercedes was stolen from a Bell St address at Kangaroo Point on June 1,' a Queensland Police statement read. It will also be alleged the man had been wanted by police after absconding from the Palen Creek Low Custody Correctional Centre about 100km south of Brisbane on May 27. He has been charged with four counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, three counts of enter dwelling with intent, two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of robbery, one count each of receiving tainted property, fail to remain at the scene of an accident and drive with court cancelled driver's license. Police expect more charges to be laid at a later date.

Teen, 16, charged after elderly man struck in alleged hit-and-run in Sydney's west
A teenager has been charged after an elderly man was left with serious injuries after a frightening alleged hit-and-run in Sydney's southwest. Emergency services were called to the corner of Nelson St and Sackville shortly before 11pm on Saturday after reports a vehicle had a hit a pedestrian and a parked car. A 66-year-old man was treated scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for serious injuries, before being rushed to hospital in a stable condition for further treatment. Teen dies after 4WD carrying six people rolls in Hoffman, near Harvey, in WA's South-West
A 15-year-old girl has died after a four-wheel drive carrying six teenagers crashed in WA's South West on Saturday night. Police say a 16-year-old male was behind the wheel when the Toyota Landcruiser crashed and rolled several times on Scarp Road, near the intersection of Hoffman Road in Hoffman, just east of Harvey, about 8pm. The 15-year-old died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. The 16-year-old male driver, a 17-year-old male passenger and two 16-year-old female passengers were taken to Bunbury Regional Hospital. An 18-year-old male passenger was taken to Harvey Regional Hospital by police. A St John Ambulance spokesperson said all five had non-life-threatening injuries. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and are examining the scene. Investigators are also appealing for dash cam vision of the Hoffman area from the public.
