Big French Forward Prospect Pairs Perfectly With Spurs' Victor Wembanyama

Yahoo13-05-2025

Robinson, Duncan, and now Wembanyama. The San Antonio Spurs have built a longstanding history of deploying elite big men, and Victor Wembanyama has the potential to be the best of the bunch. The 7-4 Frenchman followed up his historic rookie season with a sophomore campaign featuring 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.1 steals, and 3.8 blocks per game.
Despite his best efforts, an illness derailed Wembanyama's season, limiting him to just 46 games. The Spurs' 34-48 record, paired with a previous trade to acquire the Atlanta Hawks' first-round pick, leaves the Spurs with a pair of lottery picks in the upcoming NBA Draft, and a fellow France native would be the perfect pairing next to Wembanyama.

Noa Essengue is a 6-foot-9, 194-pound forward out of Orleans, Loiret, France. Essengue's physical tools are his strongest attributes, as he doesn't just pack top-tier size and length, he's extremely athletic for someone his size, his movements mimic those of a guard, which he leverages to be a two-way phenom.
Essengue isn't much of an on-ball creator, he's an off-ball player who excels in transition and finding looks in the flow of the offense. He has solid touch around the rim, and thrives as a cutter in the half court.
His best trait offensively is being able to get to the free-throw line. In 49 games for Ulm this season, Essengue is averaging 4.84 free throw attempts per game in just 23.4 minutes. (In the NBA this season, only one player averaged at least 4.8 free throw attempts per game in under thirty minutes per contest: Jaren Jackson Jr., who averaged 5.4 per game in 29.8 minutes).

Essengue's jumpshot is a major question mark. He's converted just 26.7 percent of his three-point attempts this season, and is hovering at 70 percent from the free-throw line. Mechanically, he shows promise, and his stroke has looked much better this season after working with shooting coach Adam Harrington.
Essengue has shown some mid-range scoring upside, being used in occasional curl screens and as a popper. He's also flashed a bit of a face-up game at times, which might hint at something that can potentially grow into his game.
Essengue is a very active rebounder. He's averaging just shy of five rebounds per game.
Defensively, Essengue has shown the ability to be a switchy wing, being quick enough to stick with most guards and long enough to handle his fair share of bigs. He'll need to bulk up to handle NBA bigs, but the potential is there to be involved in a switch-heavy scheme.

Essengue is likely never going to be a big-time creator, but the Spurs don't need him to be. He has the potential to be a super-role player type, as a switchable defender next to Wembanyama in the frontcourt, which would create a treacherous duo for opposing offenses, an active rebounder, and someone who will get shots within the flow of the offense. The type of player that coaches love to leave on the floor for as much time as possible.
If he can become a respectable shooter from beyond the arc, he could be a genuine force that closes playoff games.

Adam Silver: NBA All-Star game will feature 'some form of USA against the world'

Henderson/Getty Images) NBA commissioner Adam Silver confirmed on Wednesday a new All-Star format that's been floated since the disaster that was February's All-Star game. Next season's game will feature a USA vs. the world format. Silver announced the decision while speaking on FS1's "Breakfast Ball." Advertisement The format will debut on NBC in the first season of the network's return to covering the NBA under the league's new media rights deal. It will take place during the Winter Olympics that will also air on NBC. "What better time to feature some form of USA against the world?" Silver said. Silver said that he's "not exactly sure what the format will be yet." He noted that he "paid a lot of attention to what the NHL did" during its All-Star break this season. The NHL scrapped its traditional All-Star format in February for a international tournament that was a big success among fans and players. It was held up in contrast to the debut NBA's four-team mini-tournament that drew widespread scorn alongside the coverage of the event.

Former Izzo staffer, longtime NBA assistant hired by Phoenix Suns as head coach

Former Izzo staffer, longtime NBA assistant hired by Phoenix Suns as head coach The Michigan State connections are just building stronger and stronger in Phoenix for the Suns franchise. While former MSU walk-on Matt Ishbia is the owner of the team, he has snagged another MSU connection to be his next head coach. The Suns are hiring Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Jordan Ott as the franchise's next head coach. Ott previously spent time on Tom Izzo's staff as a video assistant, while also gaining his Master's degree from MSU. After his time at Michigan State, Ott went on to be an assistant coach at various levels in the NBA from 2013 to 2025, spending time with the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Laker and Cavaliers. Now, he is getting his shot at being the head man in the league. Ott now joins Jim Boylen as the second former Michigan State assistant under Izzo to be a head coach in the NBA. Amelie Mauresmo defends French Open scheduling as women feel ‘not worthy'

Amelie Mauresmo has defended the French Open's policy of prioritising men's matches over women's in its prestigious night sessions. Roland Garros chiefs are once again under fire for snubbing women in the prime-time slot under the lights on Court Philippe-Chatrier. Advertisement All six night sessions at Roland Garros this year have been men's matches - including British number one Jack Draper's four-set, three-hour win over Frenchman Gael Monfils on Thursday night. There have been only four matches from the women's draw held in the slot since it was introduced in 2021. Pressed as to whether the message coming across was that women are "not worthy", Mauresmo snapped: "That's not what we're saying. I have to stop you right there. "For me, the message is not changing, and it has never been that the girls are not worthy to play at night. It's never been this. I will not accept that you carry this message. That's really clear to me." Advertisement WTA stars Coco Gauff and Ons Jabeur have this week criticised the schedulers for not showcasing women's tennis, with the latter saying: "I don't think they have daughters." But tournament director and former world number one Mauresmo insists men's matches take priority because they are longer, giving spectators more value for money. French Open tournament director Mauresmo (Getty Images) "We have one single match per night session. It hasn't changed. Accordingly, we won't change everything again," she said. "The play time also is taken into consideration, potential play time, obviously because we can't plan ahead, be it for women's tennis or men's tennis. Advertisement "But we have to take it into consideration as to the 15,000 spectators coming in for the night session. "Since men's tennis is played at the best-of-five sets, three sets will be played at a minimum. It's complicated for us to do otherwise." PA
