Virginia Tech hires Arizona Cardinals LBs coach Sam Siefkes as its defensive coordinator
BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Virginia Tech has hired Sam Siefkes as defensive coordinator after he spent the last two seasons as the Arizona Cardinals' linebackers coach.
Siefkes had come to Arizona after two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. He replaces the fired Chris Marve at Virginia Tech.
'What stands out about Sam is his proven ability to adapt and excel at every level,' Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry said in a statement. 'From building top-ranked defenses in college football to working with elite athletes in the NFL, he knows how to get the most out of his players. He's a teacher at heart, and I'm confident his leadership will resonate with our student-athletes.'
Most of Siefkes' college experience has come at the lower levels.
Siefkes was the defensive coordinator at Football Championship Subdivision program Wofford from 2018-20 after spending two seasons in the same role at Division III school Wisconsin-Platteville. He went from Wofford to the Vikings, where he worked as a defensive quality control coach in 2021 and an assistant linebackers coach in 2022.
He also was a quality control coach at Florida International in 2014 and a student assistant at Division III program Wisconsin-La Crosse in 2012-13.
'This program has a storied defensive tradition, and I'm excited to work with Coach Pry and our talented student-athletes to build on this legacy,' Siefkes said in a statement. 'I look forward to building a defense embodying the lunch pail mentality of the past. The energy, passion, and commitment here are unmatched, and I'm ready to get to work.'
Virginia Tech fired Marve at the end of a 6-6 regular season, before the Hokies' 24-10 loss to Minnesota in the Duke's Mayo Bowl. Marve had been with the Hokies for three seasons.

The Kenyan clocked 14 minutes, 3.69 seconds to come within range of the world record of 14:00.21 set by Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia two years ago. Advertisement Chebet's previous best was 14:05.92 in the race that Tsefay set the world record. Chebet holds the world record in the 10,000. Tom Rafferty, an offensive lineman who won a Super Bowl with the Cowboys, dies at 70
WINDSOR, Colo. (AP) — Tom Rafferty, an offensive lineman who won a Super Bowl and played with two Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterbacks in Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman over 14 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, has died. He was 70. Rafferty died Thursday in Windsor, Colorado, where he had been hospitalized since early May following a stroke, his daughter, Rachel Powers, told The Dallas Morning News. Advertisement A year after getting drafted out of Penn State, Rafferty's first season as a starter was at right guard in 1977, which ended with the Cowboys' 27-10 victory over Denver in Super Bowl 12. He played the same position a year later when the Cowboys lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers 35-31 in the title game. After a move to center, Rafferty threw one of the key blocks on Tony Dorsett's record 99-yard touchdown run in a 31-27 loss at Minnesota on Jan. 3, 1983. Dallas had 10 men on the field for that famous play. Rafferty's final season was Aikman's rookie year in 1989, when he started eight games at center for a 1-15 team. Rafferty is one of 12 Dallas players to spend at least 14 seasons with the franchise. He was teammates with seven players on that list. ___ AP NFL:

The 24-time Grand Slam champion cast doubt on whether he will be back at Roland-Garros next year, when he will be 39. Moments after losing 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 (3), Djokovic took the time to put his bag down and applaud all sides of Court Philippe-Chatrier. Advertisement 'I mean, this could have been the last match ever I played here, so I don't know. That's why I was a bit more emotional even in the end,' Djokovic said. 'But if this was the farewell match of the Roland-Garros for me in my career, it was a wonderful one in terms of the atmosphere and what I got from the crowd.' He kissed his hand after the defeat, then put it on the clay, as if saying farewell to the French Open, where he was champion three times. He pulled his bags up, looked high up into the stands, and headed down to the tunnel. 'Do I wish to play more, yes I do. But will I be able to play here in 12 months' time, I don't know,' Djokovic said. 'I said it could have been my last match (here), I didn't say it was.'
