AB de Villiers' shock revelation with ‘I was overpaid' remark; new IPL champions RCB justify letting go Venkatesh Iyer

Mint2 days ago

Former South African AB de Villiers felt he was 'overpaid' during his 11-year stay at Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The revelation came after RCB's maiden IPL title on Tuesday, beating Punjab Kings in the final in Ahmedabad with former Indian cricketer Abhinav Mukund spilling the details.
Following RCB's win, Mukund revealed a conversation with De Villiers. 'I was sitting next to AB de Villiers and he told me something that I don't think any legend in the IPL has said. But he genuinely meant it, he said it from a place of emotion," Mukund told broadcasters.
"He said I was overpaid. I'm overpaid, I thought I was overpaid because I feel like all of the other elements that you're talking about, right? Where you're able to buy so many other superstar players, all those match winners you're talking about. The highest amount of money that they spent on (for IPL 2025) was for someone like a Phil Salt or Josh Hazlewood. They didn't cross 15,' added Mukund.
Having started his IPL journey with Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in 2008, De Villiers shifted base to RCB for ₹ 5 crore and was retained twice in 2014 ( ₹ 9.5 crore) and 2018 ( ₹ 11 crore) seasons. The right-hander played till 2021, all at RCB since 2011.
During the IPL 2025 mega auction, Venkatesh Iyer was the last player that RCB failed to rope in despite going all out for the Madhya Pradesh batter. Eventually, the left-hander went to his parent franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for a whopping ₹ 23.75 crore.
However, Iyer turned out to be RCB's lucky escape as the newly-crowed IPL champions used that money to buy Josh Hazlewood ( ₹ 12.50 crore) and Phil Salt ( ₹ 11.50 crore). Both Hazlewood and Salt made crucial impacts in ending RCB's 18-year title drought. While ended the season with 403 runs, Hazlewood returned with 22 wickets. In comparison, Iyer contributed with 142 runs in 11 matches.

Indian compound archers crash out at World Cup Stage 3

Antalya: Indian compound archers disappointed at the Archery World Cup Stage 3 as none of them managed to reach the medal rounds in the individual and mixed categories here on Friday. India, who finished second behind South Korea with two gold, one silver, and four bronze medals at the previous stage in Shanghai, are yet to open their medal account here. Madhura Dhamangaonkar, the fourth seed and winner of the last World Cup, was ousted in the quarterfinals by fifth-seeded Mariana Bernal of Mexico. Madhura lost 152-159 in the women's individual section. Mariana was consistent throughout, while Madhura struggled to find her rhythm after an opening round of 29 out of a possible 33. World champion Aditi Swami also exited in the last-eight stage, going down 147-152 to Mexico's second-seeded Andrea Becerra.

Satwik-Chirag bow out of Indonesia Open

Jakarta: India's top men's doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty bowed out of the Indonesia Open Super 1000 tournament after losing to Malaysia's Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun in the quarterfinals here on Friday. The former world No. 1 Indian duo, who won the title in 2023, went down 19-21, 16-21 in a 43-minute contest against the flat-hitting Malaysian pair, who notched up their first win over the Indians in five meetings. Satwik-Chirag's loss ended the Indian challenge in the competition. The Indians looked rusty as they struggled with their serve and return against Man and Wee, who won the Malaysia Masters last month and Indonesia Masters in January. The Indians also lacked the discipline in defence and anticipation and were often put in uncomfortable positions and rushed errors throughout the match by the Malaysians.

India eyeing maximum points from Pro League to secure direct WC berth

Amstelveen: The Indian men's hockey team will look to produce its best and earn maximum points from the European leg of the FIH Pro League in a bid to secure a direct qualification to next year's World Cup. The next World Cup will be jointly hosted by Belgium and Netherlands. The Harmanpreet Singh-led side is currently placed third in the FIH Pro League standings with 15 points from eight matches, behind Belgium (16) and England (16). Good results in the upcoming eight matches of the European leg can propel India to the top, which means a direct berth in the World Cup. India played the home leg of the ongoing Pro League in Bhubaneswar earlier this year, where they raked up 15 points with five wins in eight games. In the European leg, first up for India is hosts Netherlands here on Saturday followed by the return leg match on June 9. The Indians will next play Argentina here on June 11 and 12, followed by matches against Australia (June 14, 15) and Belgium (June 21, 22). India will be led by talismanic dragflicker Harmanpreet, while midfield mainstay Hardik Singh will be his deputy. The Indians will take on Belgium at their home turf in Antwerp. Keeping the magnitude of the matches in mind, India have fielded an experienced 24-member squad for the leg. The Indian goal will be manned by Krishan Bahadur Pathak and Suraj Karkera, while the defence will be handled by the likes of Amit Rohidas, Harmanpreet, Jugraj Singh, Jarmanpreet Singh, Sanjay and Nilam Sanjeep Xess among others. The midfield will be led by former skipper Manpreet Singh with current vice-captain Hardik, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Nilakanta Sharma, Shamsher Singh, Raj Kumar Pal and Rajinder Singh also doing duty in the middle. India boast of a strong strike force in Gurjant Singh, Abhishek, Shilanand Lakra, Mandeep Singh, Lalait Kumar Upadhyay, Dilpreet Singh and Sukhjeet Singh. Chief coach Craig Fulton has opted for experience instead of trying out youngsters.
