No R2 million joy for key state witness in murder case
A man who was the only witness in a murder said the SAPS had leaked his details on social media and he now needs R2m from them to relocate to a secret location.

THE high court in Kimberly has turned down an application by a man who wanted SAPS to immediately pay him R2 million so that he can relocate to an undisclosed location.
He is the only witness to a murder case and had claimed that his life was now in danger as the police divulged his name and details on social media.
The applicant, only identified as KM, asked the Kimberley High Court to declare the alleged conduct of the State to be unlawful and unjust for leaking his personal information and to find the State to be in contravention of his constitutional rights.
He said he needed R2 million for his relocation, rental, security and living expenses at a location of his choice, without being subjected to the Witness Protection Programme as he does not trust the state anymore.
The applicant wanted a further order allowing him to only communicate with whoever is handling the murder case through Teams or Zoom as he fears that his location might be leaked.
He told the court that earlier this month he witnessed the murder of his employer in Kuruman. He subsequently made statements to the police investigating the incident expecting that his personal details would be kept confidential.

The applicant said he, however, discovered, on his family WhatsApp group, that a confidential internal police communication which contains his name and his address had been leaked.
According to him, the communication appears to have found its way to other social media platforms as well. The applicant said a few days after the shooting of his employer, an alleged gangster was also killed.
He claimed the latter killing appears to have been connected on social media to the murder he had witnessed, and he now fears for his life.
He stated that the police are aware of his new address, but he does not trust that they will keep this confidential in light of the previous leakage of information.
The applicant told the court that the Witness Protection Programme is not a viable option for him as it would place him under the control of the very people (the police) who he does not trust and have already failed to protect him.
The commander in charge of the incident denies that any private information about the applicant was disclosed by SAPS to the media or on social media.
The officer said that during an interview with the applicant he enquired about the latter's safety and had offered him witness protection, which is still available, but which was declined.
Judge Cecile Williams said the only reasonable inference to be made from the disclosure of the private police communication is that the leak came from within the police. How it spread to other social media platforms can at this stage only be speculated upon.

NPA requests more time to finalise charge sheet in corruption case against Pule Mabe, co-accused
JOHANNESBURG - The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has requested more time to finalise its charge sheet in the corruption case involving former African National Congress (ANC) national spokesperson Pule Mabe. Mabe, along with his six co-accused persons, briefly appeared at the Johannesburg Commercial Crimes Court, sitting in Palm Ridge, on Tuesday morning. They all face a combined 16 counts of fraud, money laundering, and contraventions of the Public Finance Management Act. The charges relate to a R27 million tender scored by Mabe's company, Enviro Mobi, in 2017 to supply 200 three-wheeler motorbikes to the City of Ekurhuleni. The matter was back in court after a three-month break for the NPA to provide additional documents requested by the defence. State prosecutor Magdaline Montwedi-Mclean said all requested documents were presented to the defence except for the final charge sheet. "The State has since furnished all the accused with the charge sheet, which was furnished with the copies of the docket. That was the State's first draft of the charge sheet. "The State is still in the process of finalising the charge sheet and would like to give this charge sheet before the next date." The defence lawyers have requested to be given the final charge sheet at least a week before the next court appearance. The matter has been postponed to 7 July.

Two arrested after high-speed chase ends in crash
MEMBERS of Marshall Security recovered a stolen vehicle and a range of car break-in tools after a high-speed chase ended in a crash on Saturday (June 14) in Newlands East. Two suspects were detained and handed over to Newlands SAPS. Marshall's Special Operations Team (SOT) were on a routine patrol on Inanda Road when they spotted two VW Polos, a white and a silver sedan, driving at excessive speed. Also read: Effingham robbery suspects arrested, goods recovered 'As the drivers became aware they were being followed, both vehicles suddenly turned off onto Joyce Road toward Newlands. Believing that the white Polo may have been stolen and the silver Polo acting as an escort vehicle, our SOT members initiated pursuit,' said Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell. 'A high-speed chase ended when both vehicles lost control and crashed at the corner of Joyce and Ringside Roads. The white Polo continued up Hippo Road before coming to a stop, at which point two suspects fled on foot. Meanwhile, the silver Polo came to a halt in a residential driveway, where two suspects were apprehended inside the vehicle.' Powell revealed that the white Polo had been reported stolen from the Mayville area. 'The silver Polo was confirmed to be the suspects' own vehicle and was fitted with false registration plates. Upon searching the vehicle, officers uncovered a range of car break-in tools, including multiple vehicle computer boxes, equipment often used to bypass vehicle security systems.'
