Malaysia eyes key role in global space economy growth

The Sun22-05-2025

LANGKAWI: Malaysia has the capacity to capture the rapidly evolving space economy industry, with the country's large local talent pool, ample resources, good infrastructure and technology.
Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) deputy secretary-general (Technology Development) Datuk Dr Mohd Nor Azman Hassan said Malaysia's geography is very suitable for the country to play an important or significant portion of the space economy.
'If you want to launch a rocket launcher for satellites, Malaysia's equatorial location presents a huge advantage in terms of sustainable rocket launch, for example.
'Because when you launch it from the equatorial line of the globe, of the world, you essentially use less resources and fuel and also time that translates to more money and cost savings,' he told Bernama after delivering the opening speech at the Space Conference – Space Economy Revolution: Trends, Technologies And Strategies event today.
The half-day conference was held on the sidelines of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) 2025 exhibition and successfully gathered 150 participants, including senior officers from Southeast Asian space agencies, industry players, academia, ministries, departments and agencies, and international organisations.
During the event, Mohd Nor Azman also witnessed the exchange of letters of intent (LOIs) between UZMA Bhd and Global Systemes Asia Sdn Bhd; SpaceIn Sdn Bhd and Global Systemes Asia Sdn Bhd; International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and Ocullospace Sdn Bhd; the Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) and Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA); and MYSA and Ocullospace Sdn Bhd.
The conference, organised by Global Exhibitions & Conferences Sdn Bhd (GEC) and supported by MYSA, served as a strategic platform, bringing together experts from the space sector to address challenges at the national, regional, and international levels, among others.
Also present at the event were GEC strategy advisor Datuk Nonee Ashirin Mohd Radzi and MYSA director-general Datuk Azlikamil Napiah.

Dr Hazland delivers his keynote address. KUCHING (June 6): Sarawak reaffirmed its position as Southeast Asia's clean energy leader during the Energy Export Conference (EEC) 2025 held in Aberdeen, United Kingdom yesterday. Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni unveiled a bold vision for Sarawak's energy future, said a statement issued by his office. In his keynote address, Dr Hazland emphasised that Sarawak's energy transition is anchored in strong policy commitment, sustained investment in innovation and robust regional cooperation. Our participation at EEC 2025 reflects our readiness to forge new global partnerships and export low-carbon energy solutions to the world,' he said. With over 70 per cent of Sarawak's electricity already generated from hydropower, he said the state is on track to further expand its renewable energy capacity by 2030 and 2035. 'The state is also advancing regional power exports to West Kalimantan, Brunei, Sabah and soon Singapore, cementing its role as the 'Battery of ASEAN',' he added. Sarawak leads Malaysia in natural gas reserves and CCS potential and is pioneering hydrogen development with flagship projects and dedicated legislation to attract global investors, said the statement. Deputy State Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidi highlighted the importance of global platforms like EEC in building resilient energy ecosystems. 'Our presence here in Aberdeen is a statement of intent. Sarawak is open for business, open for innovation, and ready to lead in clean energy exports,' he remarked. Meanwhile, Sarawak Energy Berhad shared its long-term sustainability agenda and cross-border grid integration plans, while SEDC Energy highlighted ongoing collaborations with Japanese and South Korean partners to develop hydrogen and ammonia export capabilities. These initiatives underscore Sarawak's commitment to innovation and international partnerships, said the statement. 'Supported by comprehensive policies and strategic roadmaps, Sarawak's clean energy initiatives are unlocking new investment opportunities and creating high-value jobs for a sustainable future. 'With international recognition from the World Economic Forum and upcoming events such as International Energy Week 2025 and SAREF 4.0, Sarawak is inviting global partners to join its journey toward a sustainable and inclusive energy future,' it added. clean energy Dr Hazland Abang Hipni Energy Export Conference sustainability

Historic moment for Sabah workers: Union

Published on: Thursday, June 05, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 05, 2025 Text Size: Steven during his working visit to SHRREU's office, recently. Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Hotel, Resort & Restaurant Employees Union (SHRREU) hailed the official working visit by Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong as a historic moment for workers in the State. SHRREU Secretary-General Mohd Shahbudin Abdullah said this marks the first time a Federal Human Resources Minister visited SHRREU's office, a gesture the union described as meaningful and long overdue. 'For decades, no minister has come down to meet with workers in Sabah. Steven's visit shows real commitment to hearing our voices,' he said, recently. During the visit, the union thanked the Minister for delivering on a key promise, the enforcement of the Sabah Labour Ordinance (Amendment) 2025, which was gazetted on May 1 after years of delay. He also emphasised that the amendment brings much-needed updates to labour protections in Sabah, aligning them more closely with standards in Peninsular Malaysia. 'We waited since 2022 for this amendment. Thanks to the Minister's strong leadership, it's now a reality,' Shahbudin said. SHRREU also welcomed the introduction of the Madani's Card Worker, a discount card for union members that offers savings of up to 30 per cent to help with the cost of living. The union urged the ministry to include more Sabah-based vendors to ensure workers in the State can benefit fully. 'We appreciate the initiative, but hope more local partners can be added so Sabah workers aren't left behind,' he said. The union also raised concerns over salary disparities, noting that long-serving workers often receive the same pay as new hires — an issue that has created long-standing dissatisfaction. They urged the ministry to review the policy and offer fairer wage structures. Additionally, SHRREU expressed gratitude for being appointed to the Sabah Labour Advisory Council (SLAC), describing it as a meaningful recognition of the union's role in representing workers' interests. 'We are confident that under Steven's leadership, worker welfare will continue to improve, and the workplace environment in Sabah will become more fair and inclusive,' Shahbudin said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
