Lilavati Trust says no dues owed to HDFC Bank

Mumbai, Jun 9 (PTI) Launching a fresh attack on HDFC Bank MD and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan, Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust (LKMM Trust) on Monday said the trust or its permanent trustee Prashant Kishor Mehta has no outstanding dues to the private bank.
It has never borrowed a single rupee from the bank nor they are connected to the borrowing company (Splendour Gems Ltd) in question whatsoever, LKMM said in a statement.
The Trust alleged that the Rs 2.05 crore bribe money paid to HDFC Bank MD and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan to help Chetan Mehta group remain illegally in control of the LKMM Trust.
There is no denial by MD and CEO on the bribe paid and favour enjoyed by him, the statement alleged.
The Trust oversees Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai.
The statement further said that civil and criminal defamation proceedings have been initiated against the MD and CEO for over Rs 1,000 crore loss caused to the Trust.
However, HDFC Bank on Sunday said the bank and its senior officials are being targeted by unscrupulous persons who are abusing the legal process to thwart the recovery of the long outstanding loan due to the bank from recalcitrant defaulters i.e Splendour Gems Ltd (formerly known as Beautiful Diamonds Ltd).
Splendour Gems Limited, a company owned by the Mehta family, defaulted on loan facilities granted by HDFC Bank along with the other consortium banks in 1995, the bank said in a statement on Sunday.
The outstanding dues towards HDFC Bank, including interest, amount to approximately Rs 65.22 crore as on May 31, 2025, it had said.
Despite a recovery certificate issued by the Debts Recovery Tribunal in 2004 and subsequent enforcement actions, the dues remain unpaid. Splendour Gems Ltd also has been borrowing from other Banks/institutions, it had said.
HDFC Bank will continue to pursue all lawful remedies to recover public funds and address the retaliatory actions taken by the Mehta family as well as to defend the reputation and integrity of HDFC Bank, its Directors and other employees, it had said. PTI DP MR

CM launches Vision Action Plan Units
Vijayawada: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday virtually launched 'Vision Action Plan Unit' offices in all 26 districts and 175 Assembly constituencies with an aim to achieve the goals of Swarna Andhra 2047 vision. Addressing MPs, MLAs, District Collectors and officials virtually from the state Secretariat after the launch, Naidu stated that these units would fill a long-standing gap by providing dedicated government offices for MLAs at the constituency level. Each unit will be staffed with a nine-member team, with an allocation of Rs 10 lakh for its operational expenses. The nine-member team consists of an MLA, district nodal officer, academic person, young professional, and five vision staff. The Chief Minister, who recently unveiled Swarna Andhra 2047 vision under which the state would achieve a gross state domestic product (GSDP) of $2.4 trillion over the next two decades, urged the MPs, MLAs and officials to actively drive the implementation of this ambitious vision. He characterised the initiative as a "valuable opportunity" for MLAs, encouraging them to foster active citizen participation in the state's transformative journey. "Each Constituency Vision Action Plan Unit will be chaired by the local MLA," the Chief Minister explained. "A Special Officer will serve as executive vice-chairperson, with the local MLC, Municipal/Urban Panchayat chairperson, RDO/Sub-Collector, Tahsildar, Mandal Parishad Development Officer (MPDO), and Municipal Commissioner as members. The MPDO will act as the convener," he added. "We drafted this vision within the first year of taking office," the CM stated, drawing a parallel with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's national 'Viksit Bharat 2047' vision. To ensure comprehensive growth, the Chief Minister highlighted ten priority development sectors identified for focused attention: agriculture, dairy, fisheries, and horticulture; industries, commerce, and logistics; services sector & IT; healthcare and medical Infrastructure; education and skill development; environment and natural resource management; infrastructure – roads, water projects, housing; urban and rural development; and governance efficiency & digital governance. "These ten focus areas represent the broad canvas of our transformation agenda. Our goal is to make Andhra Pradesh a 'healthy, wealthy, and happy' state," the Chief Minister affirmed. He emphasised the need for the state to pursue not only the long-term Swarna Andhra 2047 vision but also to prepare a clear four-year action plan. A comprehensive five-year roadmap has been developed for all 26 districts, he added. The Chief Minister appreciated Union Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, who participated in the virtual launch, for coming forward to adopt 10 poor families under the P4 (Public Private People Partnership) poverty elimination programme. He urged other public representatives to follow suit and become mentors.

EAM Jaishankar interacts with Indian community in Belgium, Luxembourg
Brussels [Belgium], June 10 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar interacted with members of the Indian community in Belgium and Luxembourg, discussing the steady progress of India-Belgium ties and its engagement with the European Union. During the interaction, Jaishankar apprised the community of India's efforts to counter terrorism and promote the country's progress and prosperity. Sharing the pictures of the interaction, Jaishankar wrote, 'Great to interact with members of the Indian community of Belgium and Luxembourg. Discussed with them the steady progress of India-Belgium ties and engagement with the EU. Also apprised them of our efforts at countering terrorism and ensuring the progress & prosperity of India.' Notably, Jaishankar began his visit to Belgium on Monday by meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation and combating terrorism. He appreciated Belgium's support in combating terrorism, welcomed their solidarity, and emphasised the strong momentum in the India-EU partnership, highlighting the potential for collaboration in clean energy, mobility, and pharmaceuticals. Jaishankar's visit to Brussels comes three months after Princess Astrid of Belgium led a 300-member economic mission to India. The recent visit by Princess Astrid, who met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jaishankar, discussed key areas such as labor migration, pharmaceuticals, defense, diamonds, space exploration, and green energy. Interestingly, Jaishankar's visit coincides with the detention of fugitive Indian diamantaire Mehul Choksi in a jail in Belgium. Choksi, accused of defrauding Punjab National Bank of Rs 13,850 crore, was arrested in mid-April on India's extradition request. India has an extradition treaty with Belgium, and the government is likely to pursue Choksi's extradition during the EAM's visit. Naidu fast-tracks highway construction
Vijayawada: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has set a target to complete 1,040 km of national highway projects with an outlay of Rs 20,067 crore in the state by the end of 2025. To achieve this, he has directed officials to resolve all outstanding issues related to land acquisition, forest, and wildlife clearances for both ongoing and upcoming state and national highway projects by the end of July. The Chief Minister underscored the critical need for uninterrupted and accelerated execution of road works across Andhra Pradesh. During a comprehensive review meeting held at the Secretariat on Monday with senior officials and contractors, Naidu assessed the current status of road infrastructure projects. Expressing his dissatisfaction over the existing delays in certain projects, he issued a clear directive that no further delays in road construction will be tolerated. 'Delays are unacceptable. Accelerate every project and clear all bottlenecks without fail," said Naidu. Officials briefed the Chief Minister on the progress made in the previous financial year, stating that 770 km of roads were completed under the purview of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), at a total cost of Rs 11,325 crore. Andhra Pradesh currently boasts a network of 8,744 km of national highways. Of this, 4,406 km fall under the jurisdiction of NHAI, 641 km are managed by the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) under MoRTH, and 3,697 km are maintained by the NH (R&B) wing. Currently, 144 road projects, spanning a combined length of 3,483 km, are under construction across the state. These projects, undertaken by NHAI and MoRTH, represent an estimated outlay of Rs 76,856 crore. In addition, several more projects are in the pipeline and are expected to commence shortly. Of the 3,483 km currently under development, 1,392 km are NHAI roads, while 2,091 km fall under the MoRTH portfolio. The Chief Minister's ambitious target for the current year, aiming for the completion of 1,040 km of road work with Rs 20,067 crore, is anticipated to significantly enhance road connectivity and overall infrastructure in the state. Meanwhile, the "Mission Pothole-Free Roads," an initiative launched by the Chief Minister in November last year with an outlay of Rs 860.81 crore, has achieved remarkable progress, with 97 per cent completion as of June 6, officials said. A total of 19,475 km of roads have been repaired and potholes filled under this mission.
