This Week in Jobs: 25 out-of-this-world tech career opportunities
52 years ago tomorrow, the United States launched its first space station, Skylab. May 14, 1973, marked the start of the first time astronauts spent an extended period of time in space.
For 24 days, a team gathered research data, ran experiments and observed the galaxy via the Apollo Telescope, all while working from what would become the precursor to the International Space Station.
It was the first time we saw solar flares and were able to observe weather patterns from above.
Today, people generally don't pay much attention when scientists board rockets and blast off to live on a space station, or even when robots travel to other planets. Celebrity space trips like the one with Katy Perry (and Arlington, Virginia STEM entrepreneur Aisha Bowe) do get attention — and backlash, as some people tire of billionaire space projects.
But NASA alone has five Mars missions happening right now, and is planning a manned mission for the 2030s. If you want to watch a rocket launch, you might be surprised how often they're streamed from different parts of the world on Youtube — not to mention the live ISS feed.
