The Lake Edith wildfire threatening the evacuated town of Swan Hills in northern Alberta has grown to nearly 23 square kilometres, with hot and windy conditions expected on Tuesday.
Fire activity remained low overnight due to cool temperatures and high humidity, but is expected to increase throughout the day, according to Alberta Wildfire.
Also on Tuesday, an incident command team and additional firefighting crews are expected to join municipal and provincial firefighters, heavy equipment and helicopter operators, and wildland urban interface crews tasked with protecting buildings in Swan Hills.
The town of 1,200 was evacuated early Monday evening. A reception centre was set up in Whitecourt, 120 kilometres to the south.
The town also declared a state of local emergency.
The wildfire was first detected Sunday afternoon eight kilometres north of Swan Hills and five kilometres west of Highway 33, which is closed between Swan Hills and Lesser Slave Lake to the north because of poor visibility.
Although the weather slowed the growth of the Lake Edith wildfire Monday night, lightning did spark several wildfires in the Slave Lake Forest Area. A six-hectare blaze north of Whitefish Lake First Nation remained out of control Tuesday morning, although firefighters were able to build a containment line around it. Multiple lightning-caused wildfires were also detected west of Chipewyan Lake. Neither community is at risk, Alberta Wildfire said.
There are 26 active wildfires in Alberta, nine of which are classified as out of control.

Future boundary adjustments in London and Strathroy will allow for the construction of more schools in growing areas. The Thames Valley District School Board announced future boundary adjustments in London and Strathroy, which allows for the construction of more schools in growing areas. A new elementary school is under construction in the Summerside neighbourhood and will open as early as September 2026. Some students attending two schools nearby are expected to move to the new facility once it opens. In Strathroy, a new school will be coming to the south end. This will take pressure off Mary Wright Public School, along with three others in the region. According to board members, Grade 8 students will have the option to remain at their current school when the new schools open.

Heiltsuk Nation ratifies new constitution bridging historic governance and modern democracy
This photo from the Facebook page of the Heiltsuk Tribal Council shows the Big House in Bella Bella, B.C. In signing a new constitution in an historic ceremony at the Big House in Bella Bella, the Heiltsuk Nation took a step forward – by looking to the past. 'It clarifies and creates certainty for ourselves, for other governments such as the provincial and federal government, as well as proponents that might want to do business in our territory,' Heiltsuk Hereditary Chief Frank Brown told CTV News. The new constitution is the culmination of close to two decades of work which included extensive community consultation for on-reserve and off-reserve First Nations members. It passed a referendum with a 67 per cent majority. 'Today we declare to the world that we, the Heiltsuk Nation, and governments, are renewing and reclaiming our ancestral laws and authority,' elected Chief Marilyn Slett said at the signing ceremony on Friday. Over thousands of years, the Heiltsuk and other BC First Nations developed hereditary systems of governance. Canada imposed elected chiefs and councils on them through the Indian Act. The new Heiltsuk constitution enshrines a framework that will see power and decision-making authority shared by hereditary leadership, the elected chief and council, and the nation's women's council. 'It's going to provide guidance and leadership for our next generations to be able to steer the ship of the Heiltsuk Nation, to propel ourselves forward in a good way while holding on to our ancestral teachings,' said Brown.

Saskatchewan issues evacuation order for town of La Ronge as wildfire breaches airport
The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency says the northern town of La Ronge has ordered an evacuation due to a wildfire that has breached the airport. It says the fire is fast moving and that people in the town, as well as anyone within 20 kilometres, including nearby Air Ronge and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, must leave immediately. The agency says anyone who can self-evacuate and find their own accommodation must use Highway 2 and register at the Days Inn in Prince Albert, about 240 kilometres to the south. As of Monday, 18 fires were burning in Saskatchewan, with seven of them not contained. Evacuation orders are already in effect for several other northern communities in the province, including Pelican Narrows, East Trout Lake and Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation.
