I tried Wetherspoons' new menu and it tasted better than KFC and Honest Burger

The Sun13-05-2025

TUCKING into a juicy burger, I could've been in a posh chain like Honest Burger - but I was sat in Wetherspoons trying its new menu.
The pub chain is adding posh burgers to its menu from tomorrow May 14 and I was surprised by how delicious they were.

There are four burgers to choose from - the Cheese Meltdown, the BBQ beef-filled Big Smoke, the spicy Buffalo chicken burger and the plant-based BBQ Stack.
They cost £10.19 with a soft drink or £11.72 with an alcoholic drink - cheaper than you would get at a chain like Honest Burger, which costs £11.95 for a burger and side and extra for a drink.
The chicken burger was way better than anything you'd get at KFC or McDonald's and everything seemed like very good value for money.
That's especially as they all come with a side of onion rings and either chips or a salad.
Here's what I thought of each one...
Cheese Meltdown
7
The aptly-named Cheese Meltdown is quite literally covered in a melted cheese sauce.
It was messy to eat - but tasted great.
You can get this either with fried buttermilk chicken or a beef patty, but I tried the beef version.
If you go for beef it's 732 calories or 839 if you get chicken.
Some people might find it a little too rich, but as a cheese lover I really enjoyed the strong flavour here.
4.5/5
Buffalo

If you like your burgers with a slight kick, this one's for you.
The Buffalo comes with fried buttermilk chicken topped with Naga chilli sauce, American cheese, and a delicious blue cheese sauce.
Then to top it all off (quite literally) it comes with a chicken wing nestled on the burger bun.
The Naga chilli sauce had just the right amount of spice - enough to give it a bit of a zing but not so much that I had to reach for my bottle of water.
It was also balanced nicely with the creamy blue cheese sauce at the bottom.
The fried buttermilk chicken was nice and crispy, and I was impressed by the chicken wing too which had a slight citrus flavour.
I'm personally a fan of a chicken burger and this one was a winner for me - although I actually preferred the beef burgers, but I think that's down to preference.
This one is 819 calories.
4/5
Big Smoke

I wouldn't have guessed it beforehand but this was hands-down my favourite.
Like the name suggests, this burger is full of rich smokey BBQ flavours.
You can choose either a thick beef patty or fried buttermilk chicken, which is topped with pulled BBQ beef brisket, American style cheese and maple cured bacon.
I thought the combination of three different meats would be too much for me but the flavours combined wonderfully.
The bacon was crispy (as it should be) and the BBQ sauce was the perfect combination of sweet and smokey.
Again it's a little messy, but it's worth it. Bear in mind, though, this one is the most calorific at 1,170 kcal with beef or 1,310 kcal with chicken.
5/5
BBQ Stack

This burger is TALL. I was a bit unsure of how to tackle the three thick onions sitting on top of the plant-based patty that's drizzled in smokey BBQ sauce.
But after squishing it down, I managed it.
I think the burger could have been a little dry if it didn't have the BBQ sauce - something that I've found can be a problem with plant-based burgers.
I liked the crispiness of the onion rings and again the BBQ sauce had the perfect sweet and smokey flavour.
This was my least favourite of the four options, but I think as far as vegetarian burgers go it's pretty decent.
Plus, it's the least calorific at 439 kcal.
3/5
How often does Wetherspoons change its menu?
Wetherspoons makes changes to its menus several times a year to give it a refresh and compete with rivals.
As well as introducing its new gourmet burgers, the pub chain is also bringing in a range of Korean-style chicken meals.
However it's also scrapping some customer favourites.
Steaks, mixed grills and gammon will be gone from the menu on May 14.
A spokesperson said these were the "biggest loss-makers" and the chain is "confident that its menu provides a variety of choices and value-for- money meals".

Brooklyn Beckham tells heartbroken parents David and Victoria he wants 'no contact with them' in latest devastating turn of ongoing feud

has reportedly told his famous family that he wants 'no contact' with them in the latest devastating turn of their ongoing feud. The wannabe chef, 26, along with wife Nicola Peltz, 30, have been engulfed in the escalating rift, with parents David and Victoria believed to be concerned about the influence the billionaire heiress has over their eldest son. A source told Page Six: 'Brooklyn told his family he wants no contact and he's not responding to those that try to connect.' According to the publication, the eldest Beckham boy has had no communication with his family following father David's Knighthood being announced last week and only learned of the news in the media alongside the rest of the world. Denying he'd asked for no contact, a source close to Brooklyn told the publication: 'Everyone's focus should be David Beckham 's great honour'. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. MailOnline have contacted Brooklyn and David's reps for comment. On Monday younger brother Cruz, 20, showed his support for his mum amid the bitter family feud as he debuted a dramatic makeover which channelled the designer's iconic 'Posh crop'. Gone were the budding musician's longer messy locks, instead sporting a much shorter sleeker do, reminiscent of his mum's style way back in 2008. Last month MailOnline revealed that tensions in the family have grown so bitter that the musician was going out of his way to avoid his estranged brother. He has taken to contacting the family's favourite hangouts ahead of any visits to confirm that he won't cross paths with his sibling. Cruz is said to have sent messages to the owners of their haunts specifically asking questions such as, 'Is Brooklyn there?', to make sure the coast was clear. And he even follows that up with a request to 'let him know' if his brother later turned up, sources say. Last month Brooklyn appeared to make his feelings clear in an Instagram video shared in May, in which he pledged his unwavering loyalty to Nicola - the daughter of Miami-based billionaire businessman and investor Nelson Peltz. Apparently he only learned of the news in the media alongside the rest of the world (Nicola pictured Tuesday) The influencer whisked his wife off for an early morning motorbike ride and captioned the video: 'My whole world x I will love you forever x I always choose you baby x you're the most amazing person i know xx me and you forever baby.' Those close to the Beckhams told The Sun that the message seemed 'very pointed'. The insider added: 'It shows how much this situation with his family has escalated. 'It's very sad for everyone involved, especially David and Victoria who love him very much. This isn't the Brooklyn his family knows and loves. 'This post was like a dagger to their hearts but they will always be there for Brooklyn.' Hours after the post, Cruz waded in on the row for the first time by writing an Instagram post in support of his parents, showing he does not side with Brooklyn. He wrote: 'I love my family. I love you guys more than anything, mum and dad you gave us life and cared for us no matter what, I cannot tell you how blessed we are to have you in our lives.' 'This post was like a dagger to their hearts but they will always be there for Brooklyn.' David and Victoria have resigned to the fact that they have become estranged from their beloved son after he failed to attend any of the football ace's 50th birthday celebrations last month. Despite flying to London, Brooklyn and Nicola didn't attend the big family party at the Beckhams' Cotswolds home or an idyllic trip to France or a meal at Notting Hill restaurant, Core. Last month, there was further proof of the irreparable nature of the rift when Brooklyn and Nicola jetted to the capital from their home in Los Angeles for a joint photoshoot with Italian luxury fashion brand Moncler. It took place less than two miles away from the Beckham family home in Holland Park, west London. Brooklyn didn't even tell David and Victoria they were in the country - let alone meet with them. Harper - who turns 14 in July - was exceptionally close with Brooklyn and Nicola, who often shared pictures of her on Instagram gushing over the teen and calling her 'my younger sister'. It will no doubt be heartbreaking for the Beckhams' youngest child with speculation as to whether her eldest brother will attend her 14th birthday celebrations.

Helen Skelton's romance with Gethin Jones gets steamy as he treats her to a country club spa date

Helen Skelton and Gethin Jones enjoyed a romantic date at a country house spa this week, as romance speculation continues to grow. BBC Morning Live co-stars Gethin, 47, and Helen, 41, have found themselves at the centre of romance rumours as news of their reported relationship circulated last month. And on Monday the pair were spotted getting cosy at a spa, after Gethin treated Helen to a date at his local country club. An insider has revealed of the flirty date: 'Gethin and Helen were all over each other. They are clearly super comfortable with each other and it wasn't just like two friends hanging out.' 'Helen was really laughing and smiling as they spent time together before heading off in the late afternoon,' they added to The Sun. Gethin and Helen both appear on BBC show on week day mornings, with the date said to have taken place after they left the Manchester studio together. Gethin lives in Altrincham in south Manchester after relocating from London back in 2022. Helen meanwhile is based in Cumbria with her children Ernie, nine, Louis, eight, and Elsie, three, who she shares with her ex-husband Richie Myler. The TV stars were pictured leaving the Bafta TV Awards together this month but they first fuelled romance rumours in March with their joint 24-hour roller-skating challenge for Comic Relief. During the challenge, Gethin publicly praised Helen's resilience and sense of humour. In a heartfelt Instagram post, he shared his admiration for her, revealing he called her within an hour of the event ending to debrief. Gushing over how much he enjoyed spending time with Helen, Gethin also let slip a secret nickname he has for her, as he captioned a snap of the star sporting a red nose with 'famous ferret'. Fans quickly picked up on their connection, with one writing: 'You two belong together. Love you guys. Epic challenge, a pleasure to watch.' Another commented: 'Cooooome on!!! It's staring you both in the face!!' The pair have since been seen at several high-profile events, including a charity ball, where their relaxed and cosy demeanour again caught attention. While neither Gethin nor Helen has confirmed the rumours, their growing closeness continues to keep fans guessing. Helen announced her separation from her husband Richie Myler, 35, in 2022 just four months after the birth of their third child. The split reportedly came as a shock, leaving Helen blindsided. Sharing the news on Instagram at the time, she wrote: 'Very sad to say that Richie and I are no longer a couple. He has left the family home. We will be doing our best to co-parent our small children.' Following the separation, Helen relocated with her three children to her hometown in Cumbria, focusing on her family and career. She later appeared on Strictly Come Dancing in 2022, which she credited the show with helping her navigate the emotional aftermath of her marriage breakdown. Following Helen and Richie's abrupt separation, the rugby player started a new relationship and welcomed two more children. Gethin, meanwhile, has been single for two years having briefly dated First Dates star Cici Coleman in 2023. Previously, he had romances with TOWIE's Lucy Mecklenburgh in 2014 and German underwear model Katja Zwara in 2017. But his most serious relationship was with Welsh opera star Katherine Jenkins who he dated for four years from 2007.

The best dressy shoes that won't wreck your feet

At some point in the last year or so, conversations around heels have shifted – from how many irresistible pairs are out to part us from our hard-earned cash to how few comfortable ones there are. The volume gets turned up in summer, when special-occasion dressing hits its stride. We seem to have slipped from an era when a Carrie Bradshaw-level addiction to shoes was more or less normalised to one where commiserations around bunions are. It must be our age. That said, hardly anyone under 30 wears high heels either – unless they're on a red carpet. Even then, they're easily separated. At Cannes, Kristen Stewart rapidly replaced her heels with trainers. She's not the first to abandon outdated ideas of what a woman should wear to a formal occasion – and she won't be the last. Who can blame her? Ultra-high heels look and feel stridently unemancipating on all but a tiny minority who are presumably incredibly disciplined in pain management. While trainers will always have a place in every wardrobe – not least because a well-fitting pair is basic self-care – not everyone wants to wear them every day, especially when it's dress-up time. Queen Camilla loves Sole Bliss (so do Julia Roberts, Dame Helen Mirren and Viola Davis), a British brand that specifically talks up the comfort of its shoes. Most don't – you'd think it was a social crime. There are four considerations that determine shoe comfort: the narrowness of the toe (according to a 2014 study by the UK Society of Podiatrists, British feet are on average significantly wider than they were in the 1970s); the height of the heel; the amount of padding in the sole; and the softness and pliability of the upper – if it's velvet, mesh, suede or glove leather it will have much more give. With a few honourable exceptions (M&S's patented Insolia, for instance), many of the cheaper brands don't bother with padding. That's an issue as we get older and the fat beneath our metatarsals dissolves – the one place you don't want it to. Three more factors come into play when you're looking for shoes for a special event. One, if it has an ankle strap or is a Mary Jane, is it flatteringly positioned so as not to make ankles look thicker? Two, is the heel practical for the conditions? A pin-thin heel – no matter how low – isn't the best choice on grass. Three, if it's a sling-back, will the strap stay in place? Gigi: Denim Leather heels, £189, Sole Bliss The Sézane shoes I'm wearing here are clever because the straps sit low enough on the foot not to exaggerate ankles. They're slightly elevated, but I've regularly walked several miles in mine. They've been a bestseller for the past three years, and Sézane keeps bringing out new versions – from animal print to patents. If straps are a no-no, flat pumps or ones with a teeny heel can look lovely. Dear Frances's embellished styles are a revelation – not cheap, but well made and truly slipper-like. Plain, high-quality leather can also look sophisticated. Try an almond toe – more comfortable than a point, more leg-elongating than a round toe. Wedges and platforms work – especially with trousers – but are most elegant when you can only see a sliver of the lower part. Other details that make comfortable shoes event-worthy include stylish buckles, metallic finishes on the heels (however low), and velvet – which can look ultra-chic in summer with bare legs. The low-down: think outside the high heel.
