Minnesota United acquire Argentina's Nicolas Romero
January 30 - Minnesota United FC acquired defender Nicolas Romero from Argentina's Atletico Tucuman on Thursday.
The 21-year-old Argentine center back signed a three-year deal with an option for 2028. He will occupy U22 Initiative and international roster slots.
Romero tallied two goals in 78 matches from 2021-25 with Atletico Tucuman, where he played with current MNUFC midfielder Joaquin Pereyra.
"Nicolas is an ambitious player who has the desire to make the next step in his career, and we are excited to welcome him to Minnesota," MNUFC chief soccer officer Khaled El-Ahmad said.
"We look forward to seeing Nicolas bring a strong work ethic, athletic ability and versatility in the back as an added option to the back line this season and beyond."
The Loons open the 2025 MLS regular season on Feb. 22 at Los Angeles FC.

Alejandro Garnacho faces little prospect of a future with Manchester United following his explosive fallout with Ruben Amorim and a switch to Saudi Arabia could potentially be on the cards Manchester United misfit Alejandro Garnacho could be offered an escape route from Old Trafford by Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr. And with United boss Ruben Amorim looking to clear the decks for a summer rebuild, Inter Milan have made contact with United about the possibility of taking misfiring £72million striker Rasmus Hojlund back to Italy. The beaten Champions League finalists want to take the 20-year-old former Atlalanta forward on-loan next season but are willing to agree to a £38million obligation-to-buy next year. That would save on Hojlund's £90,000-a-week wages. Ruben Amorim makes decision on selling injury stricken Man Utd star
Ruben Amorim's stance on selling Lisandro Martinez has been revealed after the Manchester United star was linked with a shock transfer to Napoli. Martinez has been a good defender for United since following Erik ten Hag from Ajax in 2022 in a deal worth upwards of £50million. The Red Devils have however struggled when the Argentine World Cup winner has been unavailable, which unfortunately for them is quite often. Over the past three seasons, the 27-year-old has missed a whopping 80 games for club and country because of injury and has not played since suffering a cruciate ligament injury in early February. Martinez underwent surgery to deal with the issue and won't return before the start of the 2025/26 campaign, with some reports suggesting he might not feature again until next year. Given his fitness problems and the need to raise funds for his rebuild, it would be understandable if Amorim sold Martinez, with Napoli interested in his services. But Martinez is not keen on the move and neither is Amorim, with Sky Sports reporting that the head coach was 'hugely impressed by Martinez before the injury' and sees him as 'a key pillar of his defence' and the leadership group at the club. Additionally, the player's rehabilitation is going well and there is no tear in his meniscus, though he will not be rushed back into the playing squad until he has returned to peak physical condition. Cristiano Ronaldo's deal with Al Nassr and the Portugal legend has been asked about the prospect of playing against Inter Miami star Lionel Messi before the end of his career Cristiano Ronaldo has not ruled out playing alongside long-time rival Lionel Messi before the end of his career, but has admitted it would be very difficult to do so, with time running out. The former Real Madrid and Manchester United superstar is set to see his contract with Al Nassr expire at the end of the month. Both Ronaldo, 40, and Messi, 37, are likely in the twilight years of their careers with the former playing in the Saudi Pro League and the latter in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami. Nevertheless Ronaldo finished as top goalscorer in his division, while Messi has 10 goals in his 12 starts this season. Seeing the GOAT contenders playing in the same colours appears unlikely even with Ronaldo possibly eyeing a fresh move however. Although, the ex-Juventus sharpshooter did find some interest from Argentina ahead of the Club World Cup in the United States. It is clear Ronaldo has respect for the nation and his adversary however. Asked about the prospect, Ronaldo provided a thoughtful answer. "You know I have a lot of affection for Argentina, my wife is from there," Ronaldo replied. "I have already been invited to play in the Club World Cup for an Argentine club. "You never know… the time is there. I am already 40 years old, but you never know. But I think it is very difficult. I have never been to Argentina, I want to go, I have a lot of affection for the Argentines. "And I have affection for Messi, we were rivals for many years, but I have already said that we were in that scenario for 15 years and I remember that before he didn't speak any English, I don't know if he does now.
