Goldman Sachs lifts TSMC target as AI and advanced-packaging demand broadens

-- Goldman Sachs raised its price target for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co to NT$1,210 from NT$1,145, saying concerns about large AI-chip order cuts have eased while demand for the company's advanced CoWoS packaging is spreading beyond artificial-intelligence workloads. The brokerage increased its earnings forecasts for the world's biggest contract chipmaker by 2%-6% for 2025-27 after boosting projected wafer revenue from 3-nanometre and 5-nanometre production. It now expects TSMC's dollar revenue to grow roughly 29% next year and 17% in 2026. Goldman sees limited risk of further reductions in orders for AI processors, citing improved supply-chain coordination between TSMC and server builders. At the same time, it said more smartphone, server and networking customers are adopting CoWoS – a chip-on-wafer packaging technique that allows multiple chips to be combined inside a single module, helping diversify demand. The brokerage lifted its CoWoS shipment estimates to 664,000 wafers in 2025 and 1.56 million in 2027, and raised its capital-expenditure forecasts to US$42 billion for 2026 and US$50 billion for 2027 to reflect faster capacity expansion. Goldman also expects TSMC to impose another round of price increases on its most advanced manufacturing nodes and packaging services in 2026, supported by tight supply and limited competition. TSMC's Taipei-listed shares were last at NT$1,070, about 13% below the new target, while its New York-listed ADRs traded around $222.18 in afternoon trading on Wednesday. How the CFP Board Is Leading the Charge on AI

Study up, advisors: AI may be on the exam. The CFP Board, the financial services industry's main certification body, convened an AI working group earlier this month to determine how to wrap industry applications of the tech into its extensive certification course. The move is the board's latest effort to address AI's impact on the world of financial advice; earlier this year, it released a preliminary set of guidelines addressing client privacy protection and compliance concerns. As AI's adoption grows with the improvement of applications like ChatGPT, more and more AI companies targeting financial professionals are sprouting up, promising to speed up processes and simplify workflows. Advisors are also increasingly using AI to communicate with clients and produce marketing materials; regulatory bodies, therefore, are in a sprint to keep up, experts said. 'We want to make sure, as this evolves, that we're riding the wave of what's happening, but also charting our own course,' said Dane Snowden, the CFP Board's COO and leader of the working group. 'We have formed this AI working group to help us with that.' READ ALSO: Social Security Insolvency Looming Closer Than Expected and How 401(k) Providers Are Filling the Gaps in Financial Advice The CFP Board's working group comprises 14 people — 'big thinkers,' said Snowden — with expertise in the AI arena. The group will figure out what should be added to the nonprofit's exams in its annual practice analysis process. While AI is currently being used by advisors primarily for back-office functions, like notetaking and notarization, Snowden sees its use expanding to client-facing work in the future. Advisors are also warming up to the idea of AI assistance: Only 8% of advisors see AI as a threat to their livelihoods, down from 21% a year ago, according to a recent Advisor360 report. 76% of advisors say they've 'reaped immediate rewards' from using AI in their practices, per the same report. The top priority for regulatory and certification bodies should be ensuring someone is always there to verify AI output, said Era Jain, the founder of Zeplyn, an AI notetaker for advisors. Jain said more educational materials are needed for advisors to increase awareness of AI's use cases, but that the CFP Board's move is a step in the right direction. 'There isn't enough material right now that exists that's purely talking about how you can start leveraging [AI] in your practice in an educational way,' she said, 'and that's the gap that I think this AI working group can largely address.' AI(WI). The Investments and Wealth Institute, another nonprofit offering its own certifications for advisors, also has a task force looking at how it can use AI to speed up operations. Its CEO, Sean Walters, says the main challenge for regulators is ensuring there's always a human involved in the process. 'If, and that's a big if, AI were ever used to expedite asset allocation or rebalance a portfolio, a human is still needed in between that and the client,' he said. 'Our philosophy on it is, at least internally, 'AI-forward, human-first.'' This post first appeared on The Daily Upside. Rio Tinto Advances Sustainable Mining With C$7.6M Investment in Quebec Project

Rio Tinto Group (NYSE:RIO) ranks among the top stocks for an early retirement portfolio. Rio Tinto Group (NYSE:RIO) stated on June 12 that it planned to invest Cdn$7.6 million in an industrial demonstration project for evaluating ore sorting technology at its Lac Tio mine in Havre-Saint-Pierre, Quebec. A further Cdn$2.5 million is set to be contributed by the Quebec government through its support program for strategic mineral processing. The project seeks to sift ore at the source based on its titanium and scandium levels. Through improved separation of commercially usable rock from waste rock, the procedure may minimize the amount of material transported between the mine and Rio Tinto's Sorel-Tracy processing complex, which might lower transportation costs and greenhouse gas emissions. The project will be carried out in two stages, with activities in 2025 centering on technological validation, engineering, and ore sorting circuit commissioning. Meanwhile, additional machinery will be added in 2026 to automate the procedure and generate several batches of enriched ore. One of the largest mining companies in the world, Rio Tinto Group (NYSE:RIO), is known for its vast range of mineral resource exploration and extraction. The company's mining portfolio includes lithium, aluminum, copper, iron ore, diamonds, gold, and molybdenum. While we acknowledge the potential of RIO as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk.
