Dressing room seems like a funeral, but we can still qualify: Marquez after Hong Kong defeat
Hong Kong, "The dressing room is like a funeral ," said Indian football head coach Manolo Marquez as he struggled to explain the 0-1 loss to Hong Kong here even though he remained optimistic about the team's chances of qualifying for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup. India conceded in the fifth minute of stoppage time on Tuesday, slumping to a second straight goalless outing in Asian Cup qualifiers, jeopardising their chances of qualifying for the Asian Cup. "...we are not very happy. We are sad. The dressing room is like a funeral, practically," Marquez said when a question on the future of the team came up, insisting that it was not the time to dwell on that aspect. "...But I still think that India has possibilities to qualify," he declared nonetheless in the post-match press conference. Ranked 26 places above their opponents in the FIFA charts, the Indians were undone by poor finishing and lack of composure in key moments. India should have taken the lead in the 35th minute when Ashique Kuruniyan misjudged the delivery and fluffed a golden chance from close range. "The game is easy to speak. Two teams fighting and that's all. Without too many chances. I think both teams defended both with order and one action. This is football," he said, trying hard to find the right words to explain the performance. India now have just one point from two matches in Group C. With only the group winners advancing to the 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, the task ahead would be arduous. "...we are not in a good moment. In terms of scores, it's difficult for us to score. But it's true that the team played with more order than in other games. This is true. But, unfortunately, we couldn't get any points here." Marquez also lamented his side's inability to settle for a point. "I repeat again, it's for me a very equal game and unfortunately for us, practically in the last action, we lost at least one point and Hong Kong have three points. I told in the dressing room, obviously we want to win. "But sometimes the team doesn't know how to draw. And today, if you couldn't win the game before the minute 90-91, at least try to be in a position to avoid the defeat. But I feel that India is still in the fight." Asked how India can fix their scoring woes, the coach responded with an honest reflection. "Sometimes you never know. One day, this is not a problem of the national team, it's in clubs also. Sometimes there are four, five, six games that you don't score and suddenly you score three-four goals and you score However, he steered clear of criticising individual players but conceded that at times, nerves are getting the better of them. "I cannot say nothing negative about the players. I think that the effort was there, the attitude was there, the plan of the game was there. In some moments, I feel that we can play better with the ball and be more brave," he said. "But this is about the situation that the team is not winning and the players are a little nervous. In some actions that the pass is clear, we are a little nervous," he admitted. Since taking over from Igor Stimac last year, Marquez has overseen eight matches with only one win a 3-0 friendly victory over Maldives. India have drawn four and lost three, including both critical Asian Cup qualifiers. The team has scored just five times while conceding nine, failing to find the net in their last three outings.

The Blue Tigers, placed in Group C alongside Bangladesh, Singapore, and Hong Kong, have now played two games without scoring a goal. Their campaign began with a 0-0 draw against Bangladesh at home in Shillong on 25 March. Now, with just one point from two games, India are placed at the bottom of the group. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD India in trouble after two matches The third round of qualifiers will only allow the top team from each group to qualify for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, which is slated to be held in Saudi Arabia. That means India will need to win their remaining matches and hope other results go their way so they can finish at the top and make the final round. Currently, Hong Kong are at the top of the group with 4 points, while Bangladesh and Singapore both have 2 points. India are also on 2 points (due to an earlier draw) but has an inferior goal difference after the loss to Hong Kong. India are scheduled to play against Singapore in their next match on 9 October. More from Football How can India still qualify? The road is now very difficult but not impossible. India must win both of their remaining matches (against Singapore and Bangladesh) and then hope that Hong Kong lose their remaining games. India will also have to improve its goal difference because teams are currently tied on points. Possible drop in FIFA rankings India's loss may also hurt their FIFA ranking, which is expected to fall to around 133rd, making things even tougher for Manolo Marquez's side. India were ranked 127th before the match against Hong Kong, which is ranked 153rd.

Manolo Marquez to request AIFF to remove him as Indian head coach after deflating loss vs Hong Kong: Report
It has been an extremely unhappy period in Indian men's football, with the team struggling immensely over the last 18 months. Since the beginning of 2024, India have played 16 matches and won only once, and things have reached a tipping point after a 1-0 loss to lowly Hong Kong in Tuesday's AFC Asian Cup qualifier. Fan frustration with Marquez has increased significantly in 2025, with a string of humiliating losses in which the national team has looked absolutely toothless in front of goal. It is now three consecutive games without any goals, against fairly manageable opposition in Bangladesh, Thailand, and now Hong Kong. With India's qualification chances for the 2027 Asia Cup now hanging by a thread, there is an expectation that Marquez might step back from his role as head coach after all momentum has stalled in India's football progress. The decision to bench Sunil Chhetri for this match against Hong Kong has been seen as a managerial blunder, and as per those in the know, the Spaniard is contemplating resigning from his position within a year of taking over for Igor Stimac in July 2024. India have slipped down to 133 in the FIFA world rankings. However, an AIFF source has claimed that Marquez has thus far taken no action in terms of stepping down from his position, with India's football federation only able to await any decision he makes. Speaking on the steps required to step down from the role, a source explained to PTI that it is not a unilateral decision, and that he would only be able to leave following a mutual agreement: "He can do so only after mutual agreement, that the AIFF gives him permission to part ways.' Marquez signed on for the coaching role with a two year tender, and only 11 months into the role, results haven't gone to plan and led to immense pressure from stakeholders. Nevertheless, Marquez hasn't yet communicated a desire to resign from his position. "We have not got any request in writing from Manolo that he wants to leave from the job. We can apply our mind only after he informs us what he wants," explained the source further. India have a period of time to decide what they need to do next, with four out of four wins required to stay alive in the qualification hunt, currently at the bottom of their group. Their next Asian Cup qualification fixtures is a set of matches home and away against Singapore during the October international break, but with no guarantee that Marquez will be at the helm for those games.
