Tampa General Hospital to run Lakeside Medical Center, hoping to improve Glades healthcare
BELLE GLADE — Tampa General Hospital and the Health Care District of Palm Beach County have reached a five-year agreement in which the two organizations will partner to run Lakeside Medical Center in Belle Glade.
Leaders of both groups say the goal is to expand access to healthcare in The Glades communities near Lake Okeechobee. They are promising to listen to the region's needs and comments.
The partnership is the latest effort by Tampa General, the largest hospital system on Florida's west coast, to expand into Palm Beach County, a lucrative healthcare market.
John Couris, the president and CEO of Tampa General and the former CEO of Jupiter Medical Center, said hospital officials will meet with community leaders and residents in The Glades in the coming months to identify needs. He stressed that most changes to Lakeside will be gradual.
'It's going to take us two to three years to get to where we believe we can get Lakeside to,' Couris told the nearly 200 people who attended an April 28 forum at Palm Beach State College's Belle Glade campus.
'It's going to take some patience. It's going to take grace. ... We don't want to build something that doesn't reflect your community's need.'
Couris said the primary goal will be to reduce the need for residents to travel outside of The Glades for basic medical services.
'We believe that every single Floridian has a right to access world class healthcare in the communities that they live in,' he said.
'This is about creating an environment and a set of services and programs where people can access those services right here at home. You don't need to be transferred out. That's critically important.'
As a part of the agreement, Tampa General appointed Ron Doncaster to be Lakeside Medical Center's business operations and integration vice president.

Palm Beach County's only public hospital, Lakeside is a rural teaching hospital with 70 private patient rooms. It was built in 2009 and serves the rural communities near Lake Okeechobee, where about 40,000 people live and most of the population is middle- to low-income.
In recent years, Tampa General has partnered with physician practice groups in Palm Beach County to create 18 medical offices stretching from Palm Beach Gardens to Delray Beach. It also has joined with Mass General Brigham, the teaching hospital system for Harvard Medical School, to build medical offices in Palm Beach Gardens.
"Tampa General represents excellence on all fronts," said Darcy Davis, the Health Care District's president and CEO.
"We really appreciate that they're going to be able to partner with us to bring more services to the Glades. It doesn't matter where you live. Everyone deserves the best care possible."

During a question-and-answer session with the audience at the Dolly Hand Cultural Arts Center, a panel addressed a variety of issues, including whether there are any plans to reopen Lakeside's labor and delivery unit.
The hospital announced in 2022 that it would close the unit due a declining number of births. The change left Palms West Hospital in Royal Palm Beach as the nearest medical outlet for expectant mothers.
Davis said reopening the Lakeside unit will be considered and would largely depend on whether there is an increased need.
'Everything is on the table in terms of what we are looking at and of where we want to go,' she said.
Couris addressed a question about whether the changes could include a reduction in the number of staffers at the hospital.
'We're not here to cut," he said. 'We're here to grow. We're here to expand. We're here to build. What we need is investment in these communities."

Suspect in deadly 2023 hit-and-run crash charged with manslaughter, affidavit says
AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man who was accused of killing an Austin father and daughter in a 2023 hit-and-run in east Austin has been charged with manslaughter, a second-degree felony, according to a Travis County arrest warrant affidavit. On June 23, 2023, the driver of a 2010 red Chevrolet was involved in a two-vehicle crash in the 5500 block of Delta Post Drive. Deputies identified the suspect as Luis Rodolfo Mata Limon, said the affidavit. KXAN will reach out to Luis' attorney once it is provided. We will update this if a statement is received. According to the affidavit, Limon 'failed to give half of the roadway and struck a black ATV.' The ATV was operated by Jonathan Gomez-Guajardo, who was with his daughter Azeneth Gomez-Rodriguez. Sadly, both were killed as a result of the crash. A video from a parked Tesla nearby captured the crash and was obtained by Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers, according to the affidavit. The video showed the pickup truck traveling southwest on Delta Post Drive and the ATV traveling northeast also on Delta Post Drive. Both vehicles eventually collided head-on. The pickup truck dragged the ATV across the roadway, onto the sidewalk area and into the grass, the affidavit detailed. The truck continued traveling southwest and eventually made a complete stop. That was when Limon left the scene on foot. Additionally, Travis County deputies had spoken with witnesses in the area and one resident even captured a Hispanic man running away from the scene of the crash. Through investigation, an iPhone and cans of alcohol were left inside the truck. The affidavit stated that only the driver's side airbag was deployed and was later used as DNA evidence. The phone left inside the vehicle also provided evidence for law enforcement. Following the crash investigation, troopers showed up at the residence where the vehicle was registered–which was under his father's name, Salvador Mata Garcia. When DPS arrived at the residence, they were unsuccessful in locating Luis and Salvador. However, on June 24, DPS was able to get in contact with Salvador, the affidavit stated. The affidavit said Salvador 'made a stolen [car] report with Travis County, but could not confirm his whereabouts during the crash time.' Salvador also told troopers that Luis was not answering his calls, nor did he show up to work since the time of the crash. The days following the crash, troopers had no luck in contacting Luis. When they asked Salvador why he hadn't reported his son missing, he told officers that 'his son is a little 'dumb'' and that 'he was not worried for him,' the affidavit stated. On July 17, 2023, a search warrant was issued for the vehicle and a DNA search warrant was issued for both men. The airbag was taken from the vehicle and was submitted to DPS Austin Crime Lab for evidence and DNA collection, the affidavit stated. According to the affidavit, the DNA search warrant was issued to 'possibly identify the driver from the DNA' in the airbag. However, DNA was only collected from Salvador. Further details revealed the night before [the crash], [Luis] was at a party and did not return home and that the truck was lent to Luis, the affidavit stated. Officials believe Luis was 'possibly drinking and driving' when the crash happened and ran away from the scene to avoid an arrest because he didn't have a valid driver's license at the time, the affidavit detailed. It was confirmed in the affidavit that Luis had open alcohol containers inside the truck. Additionally, deputies said Luis did not attempt to call 911, nor did he attempt to return to the scene of the crash to render aid to the victims. KXAN previously covered in September 2023, the family of Gomez-Guajardo and Azeneth had sued two men whom they believed were responsible for the east Austin fatal crash. Memorial Day beer sales fizzled, and one big brand was hit especially hard, Goldman Sachs says
Americans bought less beer for Memorial Day weekend, and one brand fizzled more than the rest. The Dutch beer company Heineken had the "weakest" sales among peer beer brands during the holiday weekend, a Goldman Sachs report published Tuesday said. Goldman surveyed about 50 distributors, who represent 230,000 retail outlets, or about 46% of US outlets that sell alcohol. Distributors reported sales trends for Anheuser-Busch, Molson Coors, Heineken, Samuel Adams, and Modelo's parent company. Goldman's report said sales for the overall beer market were "lackluster and largely fell short of expectations" for a variety of reasons, including inflation, tariffs, and immigration. Goldman said Heineken"underperformed," with 66% of US beer distributors surveyed saying the beer company's volumes were down this holiday compared with last year. Heineken did not respond to a request for comment. In the survey, top names including Bud Light, Corona Extra, and Miller Lite also saw a decline in Memorial Day sales volume compared with last year. ABI, Pacifico, and Twisted Tea were among those that saw sales volume increase year over year. About 55% of distributors indicated that beer trends over the holiday were somewhat or much weaker than last year. They said uncertainty around tariffs and high prices of other household items were hurting consumer spending on beer. Some distributors said young people were choosing to drink liquor or "fancier" drinks instead of beer, citing an overall shift to drinking less alcohol. Describing challenges facing Corona Extra, the report cited one distributor who said recent " immigration policy challenges for the Hispanic population" were resulting in reduced consumption for the brand. A cutback on beer drinking during this year's Memorial Day weekend would align with a wider push toward sobriety. Millennials and Gen Zers have reported drinking less in recent years than prior generations did at their age. Gallup, which tracks self-reported drinking trends in surveys over three-year periods, found that from 2021 to 2023, 62% of 18- to 34-year-olds in the US reported drinking alcohol, down from 72% from 2001 to 2003. In January, the then surgeon general, Vivek Murthy, issued a warning about the link between alcohol and cancer. Stocks of several alcohol manufacturers dipped as much as 4% following the report. Companies worldwide are getting creative with low- and no-alcohol offerings. The legacy beer maker Constellation Brands launched nonalcoholic beer in 2022, while Heineken made the move much earlier in 2017. A variety of startups, including Athletic Brewing, Psychedelic Water, and Cann Social Tonic, have also entered the scene for alcohol-free beer and colorful ready-to-drink mocktails.

Investigators say that the material Farber possessed included children under the age of five and the images and videos showed explicit abuse. The nature of the content could bring on enhanced penalties, according to HCSO. What they're saying "This arrest is both disturbing and appalling," said Chronister. "The exploitation of innocent children is one of the most heinous crimes imaginable. And to learn this suspect had access to vulnerable individuals while employed in a health care setting makes his actions even more reprehensible. We will ensure he is held fully accountable under the law." Farber was taken into custody on Tuesday and he faces 79 felony counts. The other side TGH released the following statement after Farber's arrest: "In accordance with our policy, the individual is not currently working at our facilities.
