Exhibition launched to mark 250th anniversary of the birth of JMW Turner
The link between JMW Turner and the landscapes that inspired him is to be the focus of an exhibition being held to mark the 250th anniversary of his birth.
Petworth House in West Sussex, where the artist visited on many occasions between 1827 and 1837, is hosting the exhibition, which adds to its own collection, which is the largest display of his work outside of London.
A National Trust spokeswoman said: 'With an additional rarely seen pieces, the exhibition includes oil paintings and works on paper, on loan from Tate and several private lenders.
'They give a fascinating insight into Turner's artistic approach, his experiments with colour, light and atmosphere – as well as his relationship with Petworth and Petworth's owner, George O'Brien Wyndham, 3rd Earl of Egremont.
'Visitors can explore the Lancelot 'Capability' Brown designed parkland at Petworth to see the landscape which had such an impact on Turner.'
Dr Emily Knight, property curator at Petworth House: 'Turner produced an astonishing body of work at Petworth. From the numerous small sketches to the finished oil paintings, the landscape became an enduring source of inspiration.
'The exhibition will add to people's understanding of Petworth and show how it played a significant role in his life and career.'
Along with the exhibition, Petworth will be hosting a number of events, including a Summer Solstice evening on June 21 and a series of creative workshops led by West Dean College.
John Chu, the National Trust's senior national curator for paintings, said: 'Petworth was an inspiration for Turner over several decades.
'The unique combination of landscape, art and friendship he enjoyed there left an indelible mark on his creativity. The artworks in this exhibition will be a rare opportunity to see the place through his eyes and hopefully be an inspiration for our visitors too.'
The exhibition called Turner's Vision At Petworth runs from June 21 to November 16 2025.

Father of woman shot outside pub spreads message of hope with documentary
THE father of a woman who was shot outside a pub on Christmas Eve is hoping to spread a message of hope, with a documentary following his cross-country walk in the aftermath of her death. Tim Edwards, 53, joined actor John May in Worcester on his walk from Land's End to John O'Groats as part of a campaign to end gun and knife crime. Days after Elle Edwards was killed in a shooting outside the Lighthouse pub in Wallasey Village, Wirral, Mr Edwards got in touch with Mr May, initially aiming just to "get out of town," but ultimately accompanying him to the top of Scotland. Two years on, the documentary The Two Of Us will be screened at the Raindance Film Festival. "You'll see that when times get really tough, as long you keep going and you keep having that little bit of hope and a bit of strength behind you, and the willingness to carry on and never give up, then you will come out alright the other side," said Mr Edwards. "I've been through the worst hell you can imagine, there's not a lot else that could really turn me. "I can cope with the day-to-day now through those experiences of walking with John and walking through the country and being alone and having therapy and talking about your feelings." He completed the walk before the trial of Connor Chapman, who was targeting rival gang members when he opened fire outside the pub, and was sentenced to a minimum of 48 years after being found guilty. READ MORE: READ MORE: READ MORE: Throughout the walk, Mr Edwards said there were signs from his daughter - including a white dove which followed him as he walked around Ripon Cathedral one morning. "You grab on to different signs that you hope is Elle watching over you," he explained. "It was things like, there were always doves would randomly turn up or I'd be feeling a bit low and I'd be like 'give us a sign Elle will you, give me something to pick me up' and there'd always something random would appear." The film was nominated for best documentary feature and best UK cinematography awards at the Raindance festival. It is accompanied by music from composer Patrick Bennett, 20, who has created Elle's Theme, which plays throughout. Mr Edwards said the documentary is part of his aim to create a positive legacy for his daughter. "It was always about keeping Elle's name alive," he said. "So whenever Elle's name was mentioned, it would be mentioned in a positive way and not about what happened to her. That was the goal and still is, it will always be the goal."

I tried PizzaExpress' new summer menu at the Bexleyheath branch – and found the best pizza I've ever eaten. PizzaExpress has always been my go-to spot for a relaxed meal out. As someone who eats gluten-free, I've found they cater brilliantly without sacrificing taste or options. So when I heard about their new summer menu, I couldn't wait to give it a try. Gluten-free diner finds spicy perfection in PizzaExpress' Calabrian Feast (Image: Holly Brencher) We started with the new Buffalo Chicken Wings and Buttermilk Chicken Strips. The wings were coated in Sauce Shop's Buffalo Hot Sauce and served with a creamy blue cheese dip. They were messy in the best way – tangy, spicy and completely addictive. And with their current deal of two for £12, it felt like a bargain. Then it was time for the pizzas. I ordered it on a gluten-free base, and as always, it was crisp and light without falling apart. Each quarter of the pizza had a different topping, which made it ideal for someone indecisive like me. One part had pepperoni and Calabrese sausage, bringing heat and richness. Another was topped with baby plum tomatoes and basil pesto, fresh and herby. There was also a quarter with mushrooms and truffle oil, which felt indulgent and earthy. And the last section – salty anchovies, olives and capers – packed a real flavour punch. It's a pizza that truly has something for everyone. But then came the real star of the meal – the Calabrian Feast. It was loaded with 'nduja, Calabrese sausage, pepperoni and crispy pancetta. On top of that were two types of mozzarella, Gran Milano cheese and an extra chilli kick. The finishing touch was a drizzle of hot honey, which balanced the heat beautifully. Every bite was packed with bold, spicy flavour and rich, creamy cheese. It was indulgent, fiery and unforgettable. Now, I didn't try it myself, but PizzaExpress has found a bold new way to tackle the pineapple-on-pizza debate. Instead of serving it on pizza, they've created Hawaiian Hot Dough Balls. Tossed in garlic butter, topped with pancetta and pineapple, and drizzled with Pineapple Habanero Hot Sauce, they're certainly a talking point. According to new research from the brand, the UK is split 50/50 on pineapple on pizza. But more than half of people say they'd try these new Dough Balls, which just might be the middle ground we've all been waiting for. For dessert, we had the Birthday Cake Sundae. It was sweet, playful and totally satisfying. Birthday Cake Sundae ends the meal on a sweet, festive note (Image: Holly Brencher) Layers of vanilla gelato, raspberry coulis, whipped cream and sprinkles made it feel like a celebration. It even had a mini sponge cake and a topping of Joe & Seph's Birthday Cake Popcorn. A proper party in a glass. PizzaExpress has nailed it with this summer menu. They've kept their classics while bringing in bold new flavours and playful twists. Whether you're a spice lover, a sweet tooth or someone who wants variety, there's something here for you. And for gluten-free diners like me, it's one of the few places where you feel totally looked after. The Calabrian Feast alone is worth the visit. This menu is a summer treat that genuinely delivers.

Coldplay to reissue albums on records made from recycled plastic bottles
Coldplay are to reissue nine of their previous albums on clear records made from recycled plastic bottles. The EcoRecords are claimed to reduce carbon emissions during the manufacturing process by 85% compared with traditional vinyl production. Jen Ivory, managing director of the band's label Parlophone, said: 'We are incredibly proud to partner with artists such as Coldplay who share our commitment to a more sustainable future for music. 'The shift to EcoRecord LP for their releases is a testament to what's possible when innovation meets intention. 'It's not just about a new product, it's about pioneering manufacturing that significantly reduces environmental impact, providing fans with the same high-quality audio experience while setting a new standard for physical music production.' Each 140g LP is made up of approximately nine recycled bottles, after they are cleaned, processed into small pellets and then moulded into records. Coldplay will re-release debut album Parachutes (2000), A Rush of Blood To The Head (2002), X&Y (2005), Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends (2008), Mylo Xyloto (2011), Ghost Stories (2014), A Head Full Of Dreams (2015), Everyday Life (2019) and Music Of The Spheres (2021) in the series. The band's latest album Moon Music, released last year, has already been released on an EcoRecord LP. It comes after Coldplay claimed they had exceeded their climate change target while attempting to put on one of the greenest tours in history. In 2024, the group claimed its CO2 emissions were 59% less for the first two years of their Music Of The Spheres Tour compared to their stadium tour from 2016 to 2017, surpassing an initial 50% target. The group used rechargeable batteries fuelled by renewable sources for the shows along with other efforts. Coldplay have long campaigned for climate action, with frontman Chris Martin saying in 2019 they would not launch a globe-trotting tour for their album Everyday Life due to environmental concerns. In October last year, Martin claimed his band would stop making albums after their 12th record, with Moon Music being their 10th. All of the London-formed band's albums have reached number one on the UK albums chart and the group have also had two number one singles in Viva La Vida and Paradise. The latest series of reissues will be released on August 15 with pre-orders open on Coldplay's website.
