Rival camps offer divergent views of government as they battle it out in Nilambur

The Hindu7 hours ago

With open campaigning for the high-stakes Nilambur Assembly byelection set to conclude on Tuesday, opposing fronts offered voters starkly different views of the second Pinarayi Vijayan government.
Opposing campaigns battled exhaustively over human-wildlife conflict mitigation, the economically crippling wildlife raids on farmlands, the cratering of the agrarian economy, the 'shoddy' development of National Highway 66, and the 'abandoned' LIFE housing mission for homeless people.
Even as they sparred over courting communal forces for votes, the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), and Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) said almost in the same breath on Monday that neither the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nor the independent candidacy of P.V. Anvar would have any impact on the outcome of the bypoll.
Notably, the UDF's 'acceptance' of the allegedly radical Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami support continued to dominate the political narrative in Nilambur, even as opposing campaigns intensified their door-to-door efforts to ensure voter turnout.
The Jamaat factor
Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] State secretary M.V. Govindan alleged that the UDF's desperation to court the Jamaat-e-Islami in Nilambur stems from the fact that the LDF's good governance had rendered Opposition's campaign toothless. The UDF's brazen move to give political space to the Jamaat-e-Islami raised the spectre of empowering Hindu majoritarian forces in Kerala.
Mr. Govindan said the BJP was not a factor in Nilambur. 'The votes won by the BDJS, a BJP ally, in previous elections, would not fall into the NDA's kitty in this byelection,' he said.
'Just also-rans'
All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary K.C. Venugopal said the fight was between the LDF and the UDF. He said the poll outcome would relegate others in the fray to also-rans. Mr. Venugopal said the LDF government had left the State's infrastructure development, welfare, and economic health in a shambles. He said the LIFE Mission had ground to a halt and the LDF had withheld social welfare pension payment for the needy and released them only on election eve as 'voter-inducement.' The second LDF government has nothing to crow about and is raising the spectre of communal politics to hoodwink the voters.
He accused the CPI(M) of raising the bogey of communalism citing Jamaat-e-Islami's support for the UDF. He said the LDF's gambit was to provoke voting on religious lines in Nilambur.
'If some persons support the UDF, it does not necessarily entail that Congress endorses their ideological line. The Congress is not an arrogant party to shun the support of voters, irrespective of the ideological leanings or faith,' he said.

Industrial project at Aranmula: Environmentalists term it shocking betrayal by LDF government

T'puram: A fresh storm of protest has erupted after the TOI expose revealed that the state govt is actively considering a proposal to set up an electronics manufacturing cluster in Aranmula. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This is the same ecologically fragile site where a controversial greenfield airport project was once proposed and later scrapped following a mass agitation. Environmentalists and activists have called out the move as a shocking betrayal by the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), accusing it of erasing its own legacy and compromising critical ecological protections in the name of development. The Rs 600-crore project, proposed by a private firm linked to the original Aranmula airport promoters, is planned on 335.25 acres of paddy and wetland. Environmentalists say this land is protected under the Kerala Conservation of Paddy Land and Wetland Act, 2008. "This is not just a blatant violation of the law — it is a moral betrayal by a govt that rode to power on the back of the very struggle that protected these lands," said environmentalist Sridhar Radhakrishnan. Calling it "ecological vandalism masquerading as development," Radhakrishnan said: "The LDF, which once scrapped the disastrous airport project in Aranmula, is now courting the same forces under a new name. The chief minister's and the LDF govt's obsession with burying and destroying paddy fields has become a dangerous pattern — from Keezhattoor to Kooriyad and now Aranmula. This is not progress. It is a self-inflicted disaster." Legal activist and environmental lawyer Harish Vasudevan warned that the proposal would be a test of political integrity for several LDF leaders, especially those who once stood shoulder to shoulder with local residents during the anti-airport protests. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "If this project was considered on any other land, the govt might have claimed plausible deniability by citing field reports. But not in Aranmula," Vasudevan said. "Every senior Left leader — from chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan to M A Baby and CPI leaders like Binoy Viswam and P Prasad — visited this land during the anti-airport agitation. They know what it is. They spoke to the people. If they approve this now, it will be a damning indictment of their honesty," he said. He added that in the nine years of LDF rule, no attempt was made to promote agriculture or ecological restoration in the area. "The govt has not only failed to implement the Paddy and Wetland Conservation Act — it has failed the people of Aranmula and the spirit of its own legislation." The state govt, however, has maintained that the proposal is under consideration and would be subject to legal and environmental clearances. But critics point out that even such active consideration signals a troubling shift in policy. More than 90% of the proposed site continues to be classified as paddy land in revenue records and is under legal scrutiny in connection with earlier encroachment cases. Activists argue that any move to repurpose the land for industrial use could set a dangerous precedent for wetland governance in the state. "The real danger is in normalising this kind of ecological betrayal under the guise of development," said Radhakrishnan. "This isn't just about Aranmula. This is about the soul of Kerala's environmental policy," he said.

CM distorted history: Venugopal

SLUG-India's Israel policy Kozhikode: AICC general secretary KC Venugopal accused chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan of twisting history by targeting the Congress party in his remarks on Israel during the LDF's Nilambur bypoll campaign. "The Congress party has always stood firmly and consistently for the liberation and rights of the Palestinian people since the time of Mahatma Gandhi. This position is not about winning votes or political gains," said Venugopal. He pointed out that the Congress' solidarity with Palestine has been unwavering throughout successive governments led by Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and others. Every AICC session had passed resolutions expressing the party's support for Palestine, he said. Pinarayi Vijayan had recently criticized previous Congress-led govts at the Centre for moving away from India's long-standing policy of keeping distance from Israel. "Most recently, following the current crisis, AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi were among the first to take a strong stand against these developments. Six months ago, in protest against the massacre in Gaza, Priyanka symbolically brought a bag with the Palestinian emblem into Parliament- a move that triggered protests from Sangh Parivar. Not a single communist leader came forward to support her. But now, just two days before the elections, they've decided to bring this up," he said. Venugopal also recalled that it was Vijayan himself who met with the Israeli consul general in December 2022 and spoke about strengthening trade ties between Kerala and Israel, remarking then that such relations should be viewed positively. "What the chief minister is doing now is sheer opportunism. He is trying to use the issue to influence (bypoll)," alleged Venugopal.

Netanyahu Doesn't Rule Out Striking Iran's Khamenei Despite Trump Veto: ‘It'll End The Conflict'

Last Updated: A day after reports claimed US President Trump blocked an Israeli plan to eliminate Iran's Supreme Leader, PM Netanyahu said the move would end the conflict A day after reports suggested that US President Donald Trump blocked an Israeli plan to eliminate Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that such an action would swiftly bring the conflict to a close and would make the 'Middle East great again." While not dismissing the possibility of targeting Iran's Supreme Leader, Netanyahu told ABC News, 'It's not going to escalate the conflict, it's going to end the conflict." His remarks came in response to questions about reports that former Trump had rejected such a plan over concerns it could heighten tensions between Israel and Iran. Netanyahu, in a strong statement, accused Iran of fuelling decades of instability in the region. 'We've had half a century of conflict spread by this regime that terrorises everyone in the Middle East, bombed the Aramco oil fields in Saudi Arabia, is spreading terrorism and subversion and sabotage everywhere," he said. Netanyahu added, 'The forever war is what Iran wants," underscoring his view that Tehran's actions are at the root of ongoing unrest across West Asia. Netanyahu said that for 40 years—beginning just three years after the establishment of the 'radical Islamist Ayatollah regime in Tehran"—he has been warning that Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons poses the greatest threat not only to Israel's survival but to global peace. 'And they are on the brink of achieving that. So imagine what they're doing now without nuclear weapons, chanting death to America without nuclear weapons. Imagine what will happen if they had nuclear weapons and the ICBMs, the intercontinental ballistic missiles, to deliver it to every place on Earth," he added. Reports indicate that Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with his family, has been relocated to a secure underground bunker at an undisclosed location. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is providing protection, and as of Monday night, Khamenei remains safe, closely monitoring the situation and issuing directives to the military. Israel-Iran Tensions Rise Israel and Iran continued exchanging deadly attacks for a fourth consecutive day on Monday, marking their most intense direct confrontation to date and raising concerns of a prolonged conflict that could destabilise the broader West Asia region. The two adversaries have long been engaged in a shadow war involving covert actions and proxy forces. Since October 2023, Israel has been fighting multiple Iran-aligned groups in the region, including Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Triggering threats of escalation, the IDF struck the headquarters of the Islamic Republic of Iran News Network (IRINN), operated by IRIB, abruptly halting its live broadcast on Monday. 'The propaganda and incitement broadcasting authority of the Iranian regime was attacked" by Israeli forces, Defense Minister Israel Katz said, noting that the strike came after a 'vast evacuation of residents in the area." Meanwhile, Iran's Supreme National Security Council issued a stark warning, declaring that its forces 'will turn tonight into a day" for the Israelis. First Published: June 16, 2025, 23:30 IST
